Summary: probably deserves one star
Review: I was going to give it three stars but after reading the reviews I realized I was being far too generous yet I can't quite follow the herd and give one star. But, this book deserves one star. The bulk of the book appears to be cut and pasted from the manual. So save the money. One example of the books short comings is the section on regular expresions, which is pathetic. Whereas, the manuals is rather extensive. The examples are anemic and not very "real world". Advice -- ping O'Reilly until they publish a book on PHP, study the manual and visit the web based tutorials.

Summary: Gotta Agree with the "Fluff" Critique
Review: You like Peanutbutter-Fluffanutter sandwiches? Put some skippy between the pages of this book and eat it for lunch. The best use for it Besides using it for woodstove kindling on a cold winter night.

Summary: Incomplete and Inexperienced
Review: This book lacks detail of implementation of all but the most basic concepts of PHP. About half of the book is a badly formatted function reference. What's left is riddled with inaccuracies and uninformed comments, and it is devoid of important details.

My impression was that the author had little if any experience with PHP or web programming other than that gathered to write this book.

Summary: I've got to agree, only 1-star
Review: simply put, your better off simply reading the online documentation and checking out other related websites. Wait for a better book

Summary: Not Worth the Time you spend on it

Summary: Holy Moly
Review: I have to admit I find all the reviews VERY FUNNY. I have never seen a bunch of book reviews slam a book like this one. I will not buy this book, though I will print out the reviews and get a good laugh. Sorry for those who bought it. php.net has the docs, go there, Download them, print them out, take them to kinkos and have them bound.

Summary: Where is the zero-star choice?
Review: Poor book for learning much of anything you need about PHP. Many errors in the code, alot of white space and big screen shots to make the book look larger. Just a very poor reference and I will skip this book for something better that (I hope) will come out shortly.

Summary: Forget this Book, your better off waiting for the Movie
Review: Fluff, fluff, and more fluff. Unless you have some sort of vested interest in this book I think you too will agree it is hardly even worth one star. It is full of white space, one can see it has been printed with a view towards making as many pages as possible - big text, spread out paragraphs, etc - like we used to do in high school when we needed a ten page paper but had very little worth while to present to the reader. This is bad enough and certainly would make any programming book suspect when such tricks are resorted to. But flipping through the book I also came upon a number of errors in the code and text and there must be many more I missed (since I did not purchase the book and use valuable time attempting to learn from it). There is little of anything new here that can not be seen, almost word for word, in the main PHP website in the manual. It seems the author basically copied and pasted this material from the net (and added his errors to round it out) to make a book. Save your money, wait for the movie.

Summary: No Glowing Review Here
Review: PHP programmers need far more than what is offered in this book. The book is basically a watered-down re-hash of what can be obtained for free. The book is riddled with errors and does not go into any real depth. It seems to me there was more interest in getting the jump on other authors and just getting the first book on PHP out there quickly - even though that meant there was not time to include any useful information between the front and back covers. I am anxiously and with bated breath waiting for the new books on PHP due out in a few months.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Basically you can just as easily get this off the net
Review: The book is pretty much a re-listing of of the document you can find at the main php net site. I sat down with the book for 20-min at the bookstore and gleened little if anything of value. My advice - Save your money and wait for another book.
