Rating: Summary: Superb book - easy to read and a good reference Review: This book is just what the doctor ordered! I recently took on a project using PHP and MySQL, knowing what they are capable of. After getting this book the project has whizzed along. My hearty recommendation...
Rating: Summary: Which is it? Review: Well, you have about %50 of the people reviewing the book sending their copy back and the other %50 writing glowing reviews of the book.. Which is it people?
Rating: Summary: A really bad represtation book Review: I don't know what to say but its style and presentation is bad. It doesn't look like a reference nor a text book. I think manual comes with php from www.php.net is better than the book. But don't take my words for it, check out book at bookstore or library and you'll see.
Rating: Summary: Good book with lots of careless typos Review: Since this is the only book about PHP available in English, it's pretty much what there is. The book is very helpful and got us up and running with PHP applications. My only complaint is the many careless typos in the example code. When I was first starting, I had trouble telling if it was me or the example. Still, it was worth the money to me.
Rating: Summary: Great Reference! Review: This book gets to the point!. If you already program and just need a good reference manual with simple (that's good) examples THIS IS THE BOOK!. It may not be the one for those looking to learn PHP without prior programming knowldege but if you are already proficent in a "C like" syntax, this is your book.
Rating: Summary: Part 1 is best Review: Part 1 of the book is best. I was already proficient in C, Perl, Java. So I was able to quickly skim through the book and get into production right away. There are, however, some unfortunate errors in the book -- The mysql database section, lists:$mysql_select_db(... instead of mysql_select_db You can see that it was rushed. I'd prefer it rushed, however, than just being put out now. Great work Leon!
Rating: Summary: Title is exactly that, CORE PHP Programming Review: I found the CD alone worth the price of admission, easily got the NT version up-and-running that night. This book made me an instant PHP 'convert'. Good coverage of basic syntax, quick examples, and (most important) all the database functionality exposed in one nice reference. Perl & ASP programmers will see the light...
Rating: Summary: Great for Beginners, not for advanced users Review: Great book for PHP newbies, but the title suggests that the contents will address advanced users. It doesn't.
Rating: Summary: Most info here available on php web site. Review: Was very excited to finally see a book coming out on php3. Very disappointed now that I have it. This book is not much better than a listing of codes. The explanations are cursory and not much help to the novice or someone not already familiar with similar programming languages. The index is horrific and pretty much useless unless you already know what you're doing (so why buy the book). Terrible layout overall and not worth buying unless you already have a firm foundation in other programming languages. I'm waiting for better (they'd almost have to be) books to come out on the subject. This one may be going into the recycling bin.
Rating: Summary: Okay Learning Tool, Bad Reference Review: It's nice to have a hard-copy of a book to learn something, and this book does teach you PHP. The problem is that it has a very bad index (the index contains only the exact functions and no general topics) - this, combined with the fact that it doesn't go into much depth in many parts of the language, makes it a bad reference. I think it was a bit 'rushed to press'. It's only advantage is that of being one of very few books on such a new topic. But well, I guess that is an advantage. I'd read it once and then use the online docs until a better reference comes out (or until this book updates its index). Cheers...
