Summary: Learning V.B. 6.0 made easy!!
Review: I really enjoyed the book. Professor Smiley gets the reader right into the classroom with students interacting and asking questions. It reads like a novel. The book presents a class project for the student to complete. Buying his book is alot cheaper than taking his class at Penn State! I've already applied some of the skills learned to my accounting job. I'm not an accountant, but hope to impress management with my skills as I start to create a truly paperless" office.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Excellent Visual Basic Foundation-Builder
Review: I liken Smiley's book to a building foundation: it creates an excellent place to begin learning Visual Basic. It contains numerous screen shots and exercises. Each VB component is explained fully and succinctly. There's no getting lost in this excellent beginner book.

Summary: The most logical beginning programming book I have ever read
Review: This book is amazing! I've never before read a programming book written in a narrative fashion. John Smiley takes you directly into his classroom where you learn Visual Basic, along with other 'classmates'. Just as in the real world your fellow students ask questions of the instructor, get lost on screens, and need to be explained concepts in different ways to really understand them, all while you are working on a legitimate project. A perfect introduction to VB for the complete novice, and an excellent guide for anyone who would like to see how a subject this complex should really be taught. AND, THE BOOK COMES WITH A WORKING MODEL OF VISUAL BASIC!!!

Summary: The perfect beginner's Visual Basic programming book
Review: I have purchased at least 30 books on Visual Basic and this book is by far the best beginning book I have ever read! John even covers the Systems Development Life Cycle, which none of my other books did. John Smiley is one of the best writer's at explaining complicated programming principles in a layman's language so everyone can understand the techniques behind the code. I plan to add any future books that John Smiley writes to my library as soon as they come out!

Summary: Best Beginner VB book I've encountered
Review: I wasted lots of time and money on multiple VB books and self-paced CBT's, including Microsoft's Mastering VB 6.0 Fundamentals and Visual Basic Night School from Que, but this is the first book I found that did not make assumptions about what the student already knows. Also, the coverage of the Systems Development Life Cycle was extremely useful and not something I've found in another beginner book. Bravo!!! I can't wait for the next book.

Summary: Clearly written for the neophyte.Obvious he knows his topic.
Review: As a curious new comer to the world of programming this book has given me encouragement to pursue this interest.Even I wrote a program following reading the book. I don't mean the practice ones that are everywhere in the book, but one I designed based on what Smiley taught me.

Summary: Best book in its class for beginners to Visual Basic
Review: Learn to Program with Visual Basic 6 is the essence of user-friendliness. Not only does Dr. Smiley teach how to program in Visual Basic, he teaches the underlying concepts and terminology. This enables the learner to grasp the "language of programming" and to expand the concepts to new settings. I have learned more from Dr. Smiley's text than any other I have purchased, including the "Dummies" series, which tends to trivialize Visual Basic. With Dr. Smiley's text, the learner actually builds a practical, working application whose underlying structure provides the backdrop for future, customized and standalone applications. A true boost to my career as a budding developer and data consultant!

Summary: Makes beginning Visual Basic programming easy to comprehend.
Review: I am trying to improve my skills by learning to program with Visual Basic and had difficulties with Microsoft's Learning CD. "Learning to Program with Visual Basic 5", walks you through the steps in an easy to understand format. I have had no prior programming experience and would recommend it.

Summary: John's book is a must read for the beginner Programmer.
Review: John's book has helped me out with a lot of the problems I was having trying to learn Visual Basic. After finishing his book the beginner should be able to understand how to build a program using the Systems Development Life Cycle. His book is well thought out in giving the student a good understanding of the material in his book. Using real world problems as examples. With the help I got from his book I have been making better grades in my course. I want to thank John for this book and IM looking forward to buying the next book when it comes out.
