Summary: First rate beginners guide to VB6!
Review: John Smiley has written a great introduction on how to program using the Visual Basic. His style is engaging and very readable and actually makes understanding a daunting subject easy and fun at the same time.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A MUST READ for those interested in learning Visual Basic
Review: Having looked at numerous books on Visual Basic programming, Professor Smiley's book was by far superior to any I had seen for someone wishing to learn Visual Basic programming from the ground up.

This book is put together in a very enjoyable and logical manner and for me, it was one of those rare books that one finds hard to put down.

His 'bookclass' approach throughout the book, seemingly makes you virtually one of his classroom students and this element alone, made for both a fun and memorable learning experience. Also, unlike many other 'how to' books that I've seen, a working model of Visual Basic on CD was included allowing users to program the various exercises or the main project as you follow the class through their daily classroom activities.

I would highly recommend "Learn to Program with Visual Basic 6" by John Smiley to anyone with a desire to learn programming languages.

Thanks for a great book John -

Chris Overland

Summary: I can't wait for the sequel
Review: It has got to be the very best book I have ever read on Visual Basic. I can't wait for the sequel.

Summary: The book works.
Review: As a college graduate, returning to school to try to learn computer programming languages, I can say this book has no equal when compared to college texts on the subject. The fact the material is taught over the Internet makes the work even more remarkable. The material is understandable, and that is a major first step not accomplished by most textbooks out there on computer programming.

Summary: Fantastic, best textbook I've read, more like a novel!!!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great book-easy to understand and follow.
Review: A must read for any one trying to take classes in Visual Basic. It seems you are there with the author when you read the book. This can't be said of any other book on the market. I would recommend this book any one who is interested in leaning Visual Basic.

Summary: Excellent book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: Dr. Smiley's contribution to the "how-to" books on computing is unique and unquestionably effective. I give it a 5 star rating!!

It is one of the few STIMULATING books of this sort which leads you through the basics of programming and general computing along the way (memory and storage, bits and bytes, program design, etc). It reads smoothly like a novel, but serves as a good reference for the beginning programmer (me!). The "setting" of the book is the classroom, a medium that Dr. Smiley has undoubtedly worked in previously. He teaches his inquisitve students as they aggressively take on the coursework of learning to program. The students are convincingly blessed with variable talents and aptitudes, and Dr. Smiley appropriately peppers the text with answers to all of the "off the cuff" and thoughtful student questions. As the students learn, you are coaxed to learn. In effect, you become a member of the classroom and the ongoing project. Answers to homework/ quizzes are specific and available in an appendix at the end of the book.

I have read numerous "Learn to" books on programming, and I have found this to be the best beginner-style book. I anxiously look forward to additional books by this author!

Summary: Good Fundamental Book
Review: I think this was an excellent starting point for learning Visual Basic. I'm surprised it wasn't reviewed yet.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Absolute MUST for beginning programmers
Review: If you want to learn to program - buy this book! John Smiley takes the reader along with a "virtual college class" throught the life cycle development process and teaches functional Visual Basic along the way. His easy style lends itself well to demystifying programming for Windows. I have never before read a text with this approach or ease of learning. It cannot be said enough - BUY THE BOOK!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great book for beginners and those returning to programming!
Review: This book is a wonderful departure from dry programming books. It is easy to read and understand, the discussions between the professor and students reinforce the lessons. The review questions at the end of each chapter are very thorough. I would love to see more programming books written in this style.
