Summary: Excellent Book
Review: This book is right on the money!

Ivor Horton has produced an excellent book that is well thought out and gives clear, consise explanations to some very difficult areas, for example pointers, pointers to pointers and using pointer notation with arrays and vice versa.

The chapter(s) on classes is an example of how well thought out his approach is, he starts off with basic structures and builds slowly and in small logical "chunks" of material until the whole topic is presented.

If anybody is after a good foundation book on C++ this is it.

Summary: A good, solid C++ book
Review: This book will help you when you're doing bad at school or college in a C++ class.

Summary: THE WORST BOOK EVER ! (Reviewed as of Sept. 2000)
Review: This has to be the worst book on beginning C++ ever written!

I am a student at UT Dallas. Presently I am taking the second year course on C++ and Intro to OOP. This book is the required textbook for our class. Believe me when I say this book is reader UNfriendly. In addition, trying to learn and understand Horton's lessons is atrocious. If you want an EXCELLENT beginner's book on C++, review Tony Gaddis "Starting out with C++".

Summary: Who is the audience for this book ??
Review: This is an ok beginner Java book. It can't be a tutorial because it is not structured as such (Trying to understand JDBC connectivity for example was not easy, I found the instructions on the Sun tutorials easier to follow). It can be a reference, but I found it difficult to find information or explanations on all subjects. The verbosity (who some may want) makes it difficult to study.

It is a fairly popular book (judging by the reviews here). It is widely available in local bookstores. So don't hesitate to check it out and make up your own mind ..

Summary: A second home run by Ivor
Review: This is the second book I've poured through by our friend Mr. Horton. The first was Java 2 a few years ago. I'm forced to feel that the book was written for me. His personality truly comes out in the book. I do not recall any boring moments throughout the reading. Creating quality C++ applications are now a living reality. The shear ease of learning this language forces me to reflect on why many developers choose to assume an arrogance. This is a great book for someone wanting a great jumpstart in C++. Hurray for Ivor. Now, if he could just write a book on how to code for KDE.

Summary: It must be tough for beginner
Review: This was the second book for me. By the way, the first one was Oleg Yaroshenko's "Beginning C++". If I didn't read the book, I mustn't have understood the Ivor Horton's beginning C++ because his source codes are relatively large for beginner and class implimentations are kind of complicated. If you want to fully understand this book, I recommend you to read thorough the Yaroshenko's. I say the combination is excellent!!!

Summary: Non-Programmers to Programmers
Review: Well I've a programmer for quite some time and I must say, when I ordered this book I was impressed... this book is so easy to understand it can be for the computer dummy in your familie. However for programmers, this is one of the best authors you'll ever buy from.

Summary: This great language (C++) deserves such a Book!
Review: What a huge book! It contains every detail of C++, it teaches you C++ from the first principles (basic data types up to the complexity of Object-Oriented Programming). You don't need to know another language to learn from this book, all what you really need to benefit most from this book is continuity of reading, enthusiasm and application of the examples and exercises in each chapter. The book contains a total of 20 chapters, each of which is full with examples of the real-world plus some exercises at the end of each chapter. One more thing, you have to bear in mind that this book doesn't teach you much about the Standard Library, nor anything about Windows programming (since it doesn't belong to any compiler.) Rather, it focuses on OOP and language grammar. This book plus another one for Standard Library you'll be a real C++ programmer. If you are a beginner then go and buy it right now, it's for you!!

Summary: Saved my GPA!
Review: Yes it is. I had learned C++ before but have not used it for many years. My current project needs to be implemented in C++ and I almost forgot all of the C++ syntax and usages. This book gives a good review of C++ for the first 8 chapters, then it goes on to be more interesting to introduce everything from basic to detailed usages with example coding along with very good explanations. Actually I quickly skimmed over the first 10 chapters and only slowed down where I thought it needed to be. If you 're looking for other applications using C++, you should look at other topics such as LDAP in C++, CORBA in C++, so on. However, this one still can serve as a very good reference for those C++ applications. I would strongly recommend this book for anyone who knows C, Java, had learned C++ but not using it like me, or even someone does not know anything about C++. It almost covers every aspect you would encounter in C++ while working on your projects. Go for it.
