Summary: Not for dummies.
Review: My son laughs at me for reading books about what everyone else does intuitively: use their computer. But I'm an old-fashioned, "hard-copy" kind of guy who reads manuals thoroughly and does a lot of underlining. Pogue's "Dummies" books have always impressed me as the best of the Dummies series as well as the most helpful Mac books, having gotten me through many a tight spot. But whatever possessed me to purchase this volume, which I frankly hadn't "missed" until reading it was "missing," I'll never know.

After reading the first 20 pages, I confess I'm overwhelmed and out of patience. If you didn't already know, Macintosh operating systems permit you to execute the same function any number of a zillion ways--with the mouse alone, with the keyboard, with a combination of the two, with multiple other inflections and variations. Do I need this information? Will it same me time? As a musician, I'd compare it to picking up one of those method books that give you hundreds of ways of altering, voicing, substituting for a C chord. I'd rather play music.

This book goes on the reference shelf. Skimming the table of contents, I don't see anything that isn't addressed in Pogue's other Mac books, but should I ever get out of a bind as a result of consulting the Missing Manual, I'll gladly change my rating to 5 stars. For the present, I hope the author has no plans of abandoning the reader-friendly style of the Dummies series.

Summary: Pogue is the MAC guru
Review: Of the many computer books in my posession, Pogue is the best by far! Everything from Macs for Dummies, Mac Secrets and now the Missing Manual series. If the answers are not there Pogue is on the web and will answer questions as well as take suggestions for future reference. In my humble opinion, if it's Mac: Pogue's The Man! This is after several years including a newspaper job with many macs and variety of probs. Also, He return emailed me to suggest NOT to buy a current edition because a newer, more suited to my needs, would be out in a few months. I also bought and love OSX. Thank you David Pogue.

Summary: Don't miss it anymore
Review: Once you read Pogue, you're hooked. Not only does this man know all there's to know about the Mac and its OSes, he is an OS himself--operating the snappiest, wittiest, funniest English I know. I run OS 8 on my office Mac and lowly 7 at home, but MM OS 9 is the book of 2000 for me. Don't miss it--even if you're a Wintel user.

Summary: Apple should include this book with OS9
Review: OS9:The Missing Manual is a must for users of Apple's new OS.While it is not as funny as Pogues' other offerings (ala Dummies books)it is entertaining and to the point. There are numerous photos giving real world examples of how things work.My only regret is that I did not take a day off work, after an all-night reading session!Apple Computer could do itself a great justice by including this book with each new computer or copy of OS9 they sell.

Summary: David Pogue Shines!
Review: The author takes you from the very basics, to the more complex subjects with ease and clarity. The writing is crisp, and very informative.

I absolutely loved it, and what's more, I'm actually glad that Apple didn't include a manual with my new Mac, for David Pogue's writing is superb and in a league of its own!

Summary: Apple should have printed this one
Review: This book has all the traits that made David Pogue's book bestsellers: they are concise, easy to read and not any more technical than they have to be. I found this book extremely useful and would recommend this anyone!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Essential for any Mac user
Review: This book is a most valuable addition to my Mac bookshelf. I've learnt a lot from this book and would recommend it to anybody. It is informative, insightful and helpful. David is an excellent author. He explores many aspects of this new OS in good depth. This book has all the aspects a "missing" or a real-life manual would have plus more.

It's congratulations to David Pogue on a great book!

Summary: Excellent, Excellent, Excellent
Review: This book is excellent. If you are a PC (piece of (...) user, you will be converted. Wording, examples and pictures are correct in every way. This book is a MUST have, the Apple Systems are a MUST have. Please let me know when there is a book like this for the Mac OS X.

Summary: Just what the title says
Review: This book is so full of information on how to use your Mac more effectively. If you want to get the most out of your Mac, this book is great!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Stunning
Review: This book is stunning, in the sense that it will surprise and delight you in its depth and clarity. David Pogue has achieved something that is often claimed but seldom achieved--he has written a book that reaches all Mac users from novices to veterans.

As a long time Mac user (and ten year professional Mac software developer), I rarely look at user-oriented Mac books any more, but after reading a sample chapter from this book, I was intrigued enough to buy a copy. While I expected to find a few pieces of useful information buried among pages of basics, I soon found myself engrossed in chapter 1, learning cool new things about those very basics that I had never known. Chapter after chapter, I found nuggets that made me stop reading and run to my computer to try. I soon began thinking about all my friends and relatives whom I would have to make sure read this book.

This book is a gem, the most informative and entertaining computer book I've read in recent memory. Highly, highly recommended.
