Rating: Summary: Absolute Crap Review: This book is a joke. If you want to give up learning VB OR learn VB ass-backwards way, I recommend you read this book. It'll give you a headache you won't believe.
Rather than giving you an overall viewpoint initially of what the program is about and how it works, they dive into stupid un-important specific details about what this command does and doesn't do..and even then, they don't show you how things work. Rather than explaining Global/Private procedures and overall layouts and approaches first, they lose you in this bizarre, nonsensical approach of messagebox and input box commands that mean nothing when you don't understand why they are there...
To think these people made a book and have a job in this field...how pathetic.
Rating: Summary: Great Book for Beginner VB6 Review: This book is perfect for beginners.it covers nearly everything you have to know about VB6 for beginners.I recommend this book only for beginners.
Rating: Summary: For ABSOLUTE beginners only Review: This book is useful if you are an absolue beginner to both VB and programming or if you just want to learn a few basic skills and are not really interested in learning the language in depth. The examples are very clear and easy to follow, but are VERY basic. It doesn't really prepare you to move on to an intermediate/advanced book so you'll probably have to buy another beginning book anyway. For anyone serious about learning to develop applications in VB I would recommend going through the VB Programmers Guide included in the MSDN files which come with VB6, and then purchasing a more advanced book.
Rating: Summary: so-so Review: This book isnt all that good! it is not what it promised. #1 it is confusing at first and it dosent tell you what to do with CCE 5 and what all the controls do. #2 It is very technical, not for young beginners (like me) #3 It jumps into conclusions too quickly. Now those were the disadvantages. At least there is 1 advantage, It comes with a valuable Vb5 cce while most books are much too cheap to get a version like that. Could you really learn Visual Basic in 24 hours? I dont think so!!At least it was a reasonable price!
Rating: Summary: Not what it says and not for the novice! Review: This book will not have you cranking out VB apps in 24hrs. I expected a series of hands on exersizes walking you through creating applications. THIS BOOK WILL NOT DO THAT FOR YOU! If you know nothing about VB stay away from this book. What it is a long-winded explanation of VB and how different aspects of it work. This is not for the novice and will not teach you to build apps. There are no projects that will produce running VB apps in this book. If you want hands on practice and step-by-step instructions for building apps then get SAMS "Teach Yourself Visual Basic is 21 days". "VB in 21 days" is 21 hands on lessons in building VB apps and writing code and is excellent for beginners. The lessons start out easy and get progessively more difficult as the lessons progress until at the end you are writing fairly complex apps.
Rating: Summary: Okay to start with Review: This is a book u buy if you are just looking to findout what vb is all about it doesn't go indepth at all and gave some topics in a very bad form it is just a scrath on the surface but it is okay if u don't really want to apply the knowledge you are supposed to be gaining.
Rating: Summary: Good, but a little longwinded! Review: This is a good book, but it spends too much time on theory than actually coding applications. Of course, for a beginner, that's exactly how it should be. The devolpment process is impossible if you don't know how it works. (Most books just tell you that 'it works'. Not the way it should be.) Of course, it is a bit long. They could have cut some stuff out and made it clearer, but overall, it's great. One note, though. If you've never programmed before, try one of the 'Beginning Programming' books, and learn an early BASIC language, first. It'll help you immensly with Visual Basic! One major gripe: the book constantly addresses features that aren't availiable in the included sample version of Visual Basic. For some reason, it expects all of its readers have the Visual Basic Professional Edtion...
Rating: Summary: this is a good introductory text... Review: This is simple, nice pics, nice examples, and you'll actually be able to put your knowledge to use after reading this (unlike some of the other "teach yourself..." books i've read lately). The only thing it doesn't delve into enough is Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), but while it describes it, it is understandable that to really get VBA you need a separate book (and I'm still looking for a good VBA book).
Rating: Summary: excellent beginners book Review: This is truly an excellent book if you are starting out Visual Basic. The first few chapters were slightly boring for me as I knew the VB6 environment perfectly well but the rest of the book is excellent. The AMAZON editorial review states that the book doesn't cover much of the BASIC aspect of Visual Basic. Not in the first three chapters, but for sure after that (although I'm only up to HOUR 8) they cover the actual programming language really well. I admit that it doesn't go too far in VB, but if you want to learn more buy VB6 Unleashed from the SAMS publishing. The book has a great lay-out and each lesson is an hour long or less. If you are a beginner buy this book!
Rating: Summary: How to become a professional debugger in 9 hours or less. Review: Well I first became interested in VB after seeing what could be done in a short amount of time as compared to other languages such as C/C++ (which I have studied for about 2 years). The book starts off like any other book, however it gets worse as it goes on. The first couple chapters (1-8) are decent, showing you code, explaining things, and having you actually do some of the projects. In chapter 9 however things start to change. Errors in his code start to become annoying and your projects won't compile. Later in chapter 11 he begins talking about subjects such as the Timer Control and provides no code to show you how to interact with it. After chapter 11 the author just seemed to loose his esteem and eventually lost mine too. I also wouldn't recommend buying the Teach your VB in 21 Days book either as it is written by the same author.
