Summary: Stay Away from this Book!!
Review: I'm amazed that there are 21 reviews, all giving this five stars! We have this book for reference at work, and it is hideous. Examples are inaccurate/incomplete, and it is difficult to locate needed infomation through the index. In my opinion the material is not laid out very well. Save yourself about half the cost and get Korn Shell Programming by Example. It isn't the best I'm sure, but beats this dog hands down!

Summary: Outstanding KornShell Resource!
Review: If you are new to KornShell, this book is the one to add to your technical library. It is chock full of example scripts and Mr. Rosenberg uses a sharp wit to add a little personality to his work.

Summary: Practical!
Review: No theory, no stories, the author lets you work hands on in Korn shell. The book is organized in a way that you do NOT have to read the whole book to use Korn Shell. There are practical examples that explain every little thing you might want to do with the Korn shell. This was extremely useful for me since I am a developer who has to write programs on demand and I do not have the time to read theories or stories. This book is very highly recommended!

Summary: error in printing?
Review: re: ISBN 0-201-56324-X pages 35 and 40 there is no `-R' option on page 35 (around the middle of the page that reads `print "$x minus $y is $z"') and the output is a negative number. BUT on page 40 (around the 3rd line from the bottom, where it reads `print -R "$loss"'), it says that the `-R' option is required to print negative numbers. Just wanted to point it out.

Summary: Impressed a tough critic!
Review: The KornShell Programming Tutorial should be the model for all technical books. It is well organized and extremely well written. The book provides a ton of examples, and output is provided for each one--what a concept! Reading this book has enabled me to write support and debugging scripts for the program I currently work on, and if I need to refer to the book, I can find the topic quickly. The writing style is crystal-clear and right-to-the-point, and the humorous touches round out everything nicely. Thanks to Barry Rosenberg for caring enough to write a book on Korn Shell programming that a novice could actually read, understand, and apply.

Summary: Perfect for Beginning Programmers
Review: This book contains hundreds of examples. I ran every one of them, and they work just as well on Linux Kornshell as they do on an AIX Kornshell, with very few exceptions. I have gone from knowing literally no Kornshell/Unix scripting to now being able to script almost anything I need to do. The content of the book is written on a level that anyone can understand, and the author's writing style is never boring. It is laid out in a manner that makes it easy to look up anything later. A "Must Have" for anyone wanting to learn Kornshell.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great reference for all levels of scripters
Review: this book has been great for those who have just started scripting, because the examples are relevent to real world usage. it not only teaches syntactically correct ksh, but also how to build readable and maintainable scripts. also, i haven't found a feature of ksh that it does not cover. it is well organized, starting out with simple, but fundamental elements and building on them.
