Summary: Web Services made understandable
Review: If you want to learn how to build state-of-the-art distributed Web applications, this book will explain XML Web Services in a comprehensive manner. It examines the architecture, protocols and practices you need to know to build Web-ready, distributed-object applications. This book helped me understand Web services and made it extremely clear. I simply adore it.

Summary: Believe the Hype!
Review: As the CEO of a large outsourcer specializing in systems integration, EAI and XML technologies in general (based on the Java platform), I've always been very interested in this subject.
It's really good to see a book being published on a subject that is very recent. The book doesn't only give you a good insight in the concept of web services and surrounding technologies (which woud be even great on it's own), it is also capable of using the latest evolutions in products and frameworks in it's examples.
First, the theory and definitions of all subjects surrounding the web services concept. If you have ever wondered what's the relationship between a Web service and SOAP, whether SOAP has to be used over HTTP, or how that UDDI discovery idea can be used in practical, this book really gives a clear and usefull explanation of all these things.
On the other hand, the examples used throughout the book give a very focused view on the steps to take to implement web services in all possible ways. As mentioned before, the tools used in the examples of this book are really the latest developments on the market.
If you share the frustration of being confused by the number of standards involved with web services, how they relate, and how to carry all this theoretical stuff towards a real implementation, this book will provide you with what you need.

Summary: Mandatory Reading for Agile Developers
Review: Several members of our staff in India have purchased this book to help them get up to speed quickly on Web Services. While I have not read the book myself, I can say that they have been successful using it.

Summary: Software Development as a Commodity
Review: Software developers will soon be plug and play. Last time I made the argument from the perspective of an engineering purist. Agile methodology refers to a set of practices that look for effective solutions by dealing with complexity. It deals with this complexity in an intelligent but open way, rather than a stupid, but clearly defined manner. Agile methods usually work by creating a very simple rule set, that creates feedback points in a development process.

Summary: It's a good book
Review: This book is not about H1B visas, politics or any other controversial topic. It is simply about Web Services. You should read it.

Summary: Agile Manifesto
Review: The topic of web services has been covered by lots of books by lots of publishers. What makes this book interesting is it seems to have become famous because of topics that the authors also write about related to agile software development.

It seems as if they touched on a hotspot that has caused people who have been drop kicked out of the industry (for good reasons) to emerge. Some feel that books should only be read by people residing in the United States. The supression of knowledge is difficult at best and always leads to disappointment.

The book in of itself is a good one and provides adequate coverage of all of the important web services specifications. I suspect that this book will become an all-time bestseller, not because of its content but because of the political polarization surrounding it.

Summary: Effectiveness and Leadership!
Review: A attendee brought this book to my attention at one of my seminars and suggested that I purchase a copy. The copy showed up last night and I read the first six chapters. The authors have a unique writing style that is unlike others. It is not the usual dry textbook material that puts me to sleep. Instead, they keep the reader engaged using real world examples and openly discuss the pros and cons of particular approaches. This book is good for those who want one book that explains all of the concepts you need.

Summary: Excellent Coverage
Review: This book does a good job at covering all of the web services specifications and principles behind them. I appreciate having lots of code that I can incorporate into projects I am working on.

I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a solid book on this topic.

Summary: Saga of the IT industry
Review: The book has started a lot of controversy on several Yahoo Groups. I book this book two weeks back and was happy with the purchase. It covers everything I need and was recommended by my boss.

Several people at my company (wipro) purchased it also. Sample chapters are available on theserverside.com.

Summary: Java Developers Journal
Review: ...It is well written and is up to date. I will say that I struggled with understanding the meaning of several chapters and it required re-reading multiple times to get out the gems. This is not a book for those who haven't been doing Java development for several years.

If you are new to Web Services, then do not buy this book thinking it is the only one you will need. This is for intermediate to advanced developers and architects. Start with a simple book first and then purchase this one.

I have only two complaints about the book. The code is horrible in its format and the price is too high.
