Summary: A good introduction to x86 architecture & peripherals
Review: IBM-compatible PC performance improvements dictate that upgrade or replace your computer frequently to run the latest software. "How Computers Work" gets you up to speed on component selection and replacement. The book covers a broad range of topics by pointing to the forest, not the trees, in an accessible and entertaining style. I was somewhat put off by the "picture-book" look, but the illustrations are very good, and probably appropriate for the target audience. An excellent primer, with some useful information for professionals as well.

Review: Excellent explanation of computer hardware (best I've yet found) with practically all pictures clarifying and simplifying the text descriptions and explanations. All it needs for the novice to understand everything is a Glossary or a technical dictionary section to simply define the technical words that are not explained in the text. Mark Sowers, M.D.

Review: This edition with the CD may be out of print, but it's available in some bookstores. Plus, there is a new Deluxe edtion with a third new content covering all the latest technology. Ask Amazon for it. Ron White

Summary: If you like computing, you'll like this book.
Review: I've given up trying to figure out who's bought 600,000 copies of earlier editions of How Computer Work. I thought it would be for novices; my publisher tells me it's for wireheads. I hope it's for both. For this special edition, I've added about 50 percent more material, updated everything and replaced some illustrations that didn't really work well. I hope you'll check it out.

Review: few weeks ago, I read the book "how computers works" and I think is very special book as computer technical reference, because is very ilustrated, and wait the translation to spanish, why ? all book has illustrative material, and the acknowledge is very clear.

Review: This book is good as a computer book, it contains a good illustrations, meaning words ...... But, this book is for technicals rather than users, it contains words that users can not understand. On the other hand, for technicals it is a good reference for them. for me I like this book.

Summary: The best so far about technology and computers
Review: When i first pick this book i expect to have a book with some nice pictures about how computers works, now that i{m reading the book i have to say that i become adicted to it. Easy to understand, and very interesting topics about the different devices that computers and thecnology can bring to us explained in a very nice manner and with incredibly clear draws and diagrams. PLUS a very nice cd rom with a virtual tour inside a computer and better yet some nice links to get more info.And it doesn{t stops there, because the cd rom have some really useful SW you can use and try in your computer. It{s been a long time since the last time i pick such a nice book.Give it a try it worth each dollar you invest on it and more.
And for the end i never write reviews so it tells how much i like this book.

Summary: Wonderful overview of internal Computer components, et al
Review: I work in the IT / Computer Repair industry, and I personally feel that this book is very helpful to most individuals, especially those who have little familiarity with computer systems, internal structures, gadgets and whatnots.
I found the detailed and heavily-illustrated sections regarding chipsets, processors, memory buffers, etc. to be very helpful. Most computer manuals are very technical and assume you know a computer inside and out, already (despite constant development in the industry and the fact that by the time a computer hits the shelves it is out-dated).
These "How Computers / Internet," etc. books are wonderful manuals for those who just want to know "how the heck does this crazy thing work, anyway ?!?!"
You won't be able to pass your A+ Certifications with this series of books, but you will understand much of the jargon people throw-around in the office, and you will see flow charts of "How Computers Work."
I sincerely appreciated the diagrams of a Techtronix Printer!
Suffice to Say, if "a picture is worth a thousand words," this book is pricesless for the novice and very helpful for the beginning (uncertified) Techs in the computer repair field. The usual Black & White Illustrations in computer manuals aren't exactly condusive to really getting a feel for the stuff you might be yanking out and replacing. However, this book is full of numerous full-color, full-page illustrations.
