Summary: This book is, simply, terrible...
Review: I can't emphasize enough how I would encourage readers NOT to purchase this book. Not only is it out of date (to no fault of its author), but it is incredibly disorganized (directly the fault of its author). This, however, is not unusual for O'Reilly books which are notorious for a general lack of order and the inclusion of irrelevant material. Should you ignore my advice, I'm certain you'll find yourself flipping back and forth as you read each chapter in succession, as nothing is covered ("Refer to Chapter X for details on X" is something you run into practically on every page) in cohesive chunks. And you'll also get other useful tips like "Experiment until you have a firm grasp of when the different handlers in different scripts are being called or until you are totally confused. Then start with new movie, and try it all again." That little gem applies equally as well to reading the book as it does to handling Lingo's archaic structure...

Summary: The Best Lingo Resource
Review: I had gained more insigt into lingo by the end of the first chapter of this book than I had by the time I finished the three others I had bought before, if you need to do lingo, this is a one stop book, no need go anywhere else. What really makes this book even better than the already well writen and defined resource that it is, if you have a questions, the author will actually help you answer them, and all this for half the price of most books. if there is a better deal out there I havent found it. THIS IS THE BOOK.

Summary: absolutely THE book for advanced Director developers
Review: I have no affiliation to the author or publisher -- GET THIS BOOK, even if you are upgrading to Director 7. Finally, all the nitty details and wierdnesses of Lingo in one place -- stuff you may never find even after days of sifting the newsgroups, technotes, etc.

Please, O'Reilly, rush out Bruce Epstein's Director 7 update to this book -- Mr. Epstein are you listening?

This should be required reading for all of Macromedia's Director developer and support team -- certainly, much of this info is not in Macromedia's documentation.

Summary: Intelligent insight on Object Orientated Lingo Programming
Review: I have tried all the other books on Director & Lingo and only this book dares and succeeds to actually cover real programming in Lingo.

For all the real programmers out there read this book and the secrets of Lingo will be opend up to you.

As for Macromedia I would pay Bruce Epstein as much money as he wants for the rights to these books and then you should ship them with Director as your manuals are a insult to the power of Director and especially Lingo. If Macromedia truly wants people to use Director to the full then only this book will show them how to do it !

Summary: The Best Resource for Dir 7!
Review: I value this book highly...it provides me with instant answers and highly decipherable concepts at the same time!

Buy it. Use it. You won't go wrong!

Summary: Great book - a must buy
Review: I'm an intermediate to advanced user of Director - have been for the past 2 years - and I highly recommend this book to anyone really interested in unlocking the coding possibilities of Director. I am still waiting for someone to write the definitive guide to game-programming with Director - Bruce does touch the subject here and there - but the book deals with more generic programming concepts. Will buy Director in a Nutshell next.

Thanks for sharing all the info with us.

Summary: Must-have!
Review: I've got to join the cheering squad on this one. This book is comprehensive, well-writtten, and clear, and bridges the gap between the really simple stuff and the advanced topics. It also has a huge list of undocumented and misdocumented features, and lots of info on bugs. The only problem is that it only covers through Director 6.5, but the info is still incredibly useful. This is actually the best programming book that I've seen for any language.

Summary: Not for programming newbies
Review: If you are not already familiar with computer programming paradigms, this is not the book for you.

Summary: Another Awesome Nutshell book
Review: O'rielly has done it again (not to mention Bruce Epstein)! Lingo in a Nutshell has proven to be an EXCELLENT desktop reference since I purchased it. This book has saved me MAJOR time and effort on many different 'monkey wrenches' in my Director projects. If you program Director professionally (or are planning to) this book is for you. The only thing better than having Lingo in a Nutshell is having both Lingo in a Nutshell and Director in a Nutshell (another must have book).

Summary: Fodder for the creative person
Review: Thanks for this indepth text. Not only have you eliminated all of the uninteresting small talk shown in many other books, you actually make lingo understandable ... I especially like your'e section on FileIO and chunk expressions. Good stuff
