Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great, but not up to date!
Review: This book is a valuable reference, but before you buy it, PLEASE take note of the fact that it was published two years ago and Director has undergone two upgrades since then. This book won't teach you about any of the new Lingo introduced in Director 7 and 8.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: An excellent reference/textbook for any Director Developper.
Review: This book is an amazingly comprehensive reference to Lingo (for Macromedia Director). As a multimedia student, this book is an indisposable development tool that has already saved me much time and energy. Not only is Bruce a Lingo genius, but also a talented author, which makes the book easy to read, at the same time, easy to USE. My Multimedia/Design class was told to purchase a different book for the class, which I did, and was genuinely ripped off. LIAN is a much better piece of writing, and reference book, and at less than 33% of the price. I give this book a 5 star rating. Thank you Bruce.

Summary: WAY out of date
Review: This book was written for Director 6.5, and currently Director is past 8.5 (MX is basically Director 9). So forget about anything about behaviors, library palette, anything 3D.. in short, this book was out of date 5 years ago.

Beyond this, the nutshell library is designed as a reference for programmers who want to quick-reference a new language. If you're already up to speed on C++, Java, SQL, etc, then the nutshell format will make sense as you seehow Director includes functions and classes in the form of handlers and properties. However, for the novice programmer looking to learn more about scripting Lingo, this book is awful.

I'd recommend the Director Demystified series instead, whatever's the latest edition. Macromedia's version updates aren't drastic, so at this point a book covering 8.5 is just fine.

Summary: Lingo in a Nutshell
Review: This is a wonderful book, but don't make the samae mistake I did. I didn't look close enough, and it is OUTDATED. It is for Director 6. The most recent version is 8.5...and they are totally different.

Summary: A great reference, but NOT for beginners
Review: This is the best reference for Lingo techies, but I would not recommend it for either beginners or the "artist types" who only use behaviors and the graphic tools.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: At the time it was a goodie...
Review: This one sat next to the 'Bible' in class and at home. The Lingo dictionary if you would...
Now to see if they have an updated version.

Summary: Behind the curve.
Review: Update this to Lingo 7, and you've got yourself another sale. Until then, forget it.
