Summary: This could have been a good book...but
Review: After a quick survey I chose this book as the key to my study plan for 70-240. I'm sorry to say that I failed the exam, and the reason was poor preparation. However this book did play a part in my downfall. The lessons were good, but contained so many mistake and typo's (that were never corrected in the errata) that I became quickly confused. Having the step.by.step on a CD seemed like a good idea, but they were terribly clumsy to use, and without them the book is worthless. The sample test questions also contain errors that are never addressed in the errata, and they bore no resemblence to the real questions.

Summary: Simply Brutal
Review: Don't waste your time buying this book. It was absolutely brutal. Most of the useful information was on the CD in PDF format, which is a pain in the butt. Also, all the chapters provided bare-bones info. and really didn't go into the detail necessary to prepare you for this exam.

Summary: Best book I've found for the 240
Review: Fantastic. The best 240 book I've read: comprehensive, simple to understand, not littered with irrelevances. I've read many other book where whole chunks of the curriculum have been skipped over or totally ignored, (especially MOC Network Infrastructure) - this fills the gaps. If you read only one book (you're stupid 'cause you'll fail the exam:), but at least make sure it's this one.

Summary: Accelerated for Dummies?
Review: For those who are MCSEs already, this is NOT a book for you!

This book is simply a single Core Four for Windows 2000 book for those with little to no working experience with Windows NT 4.0 or 2000 administration.

For those with administration experience on Windows NT 4.0, or extensive knowledge of Windows NT 4.0, you would do better purchasing exam notes for 70-240 published by either Coriolis or Sybex, and checking Microsoft's Windows 2000 Online Resources for additional information.

Summary: Nothing Special about it...
Review: I got this book last March 2001 and read it all, it lacks a lot of useful information needed for real life and/or Exam pass; the labs and exercises are available on the companion CD only. Also I found a lot of typo errors in some chapters and the securtiy part is so poor, and many information were repeated a lot in other chapters, which makes the book quite large and heavy.

Most of the text in this book is available in Win2K online-help and the Resource Kit, and refering to the companion CD is a real pain if you're reading the book far away from the computer.

The included sample questions/apply your knowledge part is far away from the real exam questions/scenarious.

Waste of money, get Sybex or other books, at least they include the exercises or labs inside the book rather than on CD.

Summary: Thorough - Sort Of
Review: I passed the accelerated exam with use of this book and a one-week crunch course to get the hands-on with Win2K. This book throws a ton of stuff at you. Much of it will be familiar to you if you are 4.0 certified. But much will also be very unclear until you see it on a screen. There are some areas that this book covers in terms that are too general, and I'm happy I had a knowledgeable instructor fill in those holes for me. And often the text rambles a bit. I also found it annoying that I had to go to the CD for many of the details - even though I understand this necessity; had the CD's extras all been included in the printed volume, this would likely be a 2000 page book.

Exam Tips: If you know this stuff, this is not a hard test. But prepare to have your mental stamina tested by this monster.

Summary: Pass the test with Flying Colors
Review: MCSE Windows 2000 Accelerated Exam - Training Guide Exam 7-0240 AUTHOR: Brian Komar, MCSE+I, MCT PUBLISHER: New Riders REVIEWED BY: Barbara Rhoades

BOOK REVIEW: One CD and 1300 pages later, you will be prepared to pass the MCSE Windows 2000 Accelerated Exam! This "light reading" book is divided into four parts. Each part focuses on installing, configuring and administering a different part of Microsoft Windows 2000. Part I is on Professional, Part II on Server, Part II on Network Infrastructure and Part IV is on Directory Services Infrastructure.

There are exam tips and notes set off in a box in the margins so the reader will be sure to take careful note. There are few illustrations but the print is in a size that doesn't cause the reader to squint to read the words.

There are case studies, chapter summaries, key terms, review questions and, best of all, THE ANSWERS to the questions at the end of each chapter. Armed with the knowledge this book provides, you should pass your MCSE Windows 2000 accelerated exam with flying colors.
