Summary: Pass the test with Flying Colors
Review: MCSE Windows 2000 Accelerated Exam - Training Guide Exam 7-0240 AUTHOR: Brian Komar, MCSE+I, MCT PUBLISHER: New Riders REVIEWED BY: Barbara Rhoades

BOOK REVIEW: One CD and 1300 pages later, you will be prepared to pass the MCSE Windows 2000 Accelerated Exam! This "light reading" book is divided into four parts. Each part focuses on installing, configuring and administering a different part of Microsoft Windows 2000. Part I is on Professional, Part II on Server, Part II on Network Infrastructure and Part IV is on Directory Services Infrastructure.

There are exam tips and notes set off in a box in the margins so the reader will be sure to take careful note. There are few illustrations but the print is in a size that doesn't cause the reader to squint to read the words.

There are case studies, chapter summaries, key terms, review questions and, best of all, THE ANSWERS to the questions at the end of each chapter. Armed with the knowledge this book provides, you should pass your MCSE Windows 2000 accelerated exam with flying colors.

Summary: Readable but many errors.
Review: This book is much more readable than the Osborne title, but it has many errors in both the text and the end-of-chapter tests. (text ex. - They can't seem to make up their minds whether they want to use absolute hardware minimums or recommended minimums when giving you hardware requirements) Since I first read the four Core books by the same publisher, I could see where they cut-and-pasted a lot of text from them. The problem there is that they also copied over the same errors they had in the full texts. In addition, at least in the Active Directory section, the Case Studies they copied were out-of-context and didn't include all the data that had been in previous chapters in the full book.

It WAS educational to track down the mistakes, though.

Overall, I would call this effort a combination of knowledge gaps on the part of the authors and a very poor job of editing and proofreading.

Summary: Almost the best
Review: This is the best book for Accelerated exam. But there are few things you should know. If you read the chapters you will notice that a lot of the relevant information to the tests on the CD are not covered in the chapters. The reason being, they are included on the CD in the chapter's folder In UDF format. Which means having to print each file in order to do the exercises and study for the tests unless you have two computers in the case of exercises. The tests on the CD are typical but plenty. But I wouldn't rely entirely on them. Some of the questions are repeated several times and few have errors. My biggest problem about the tests is that you cannot print them even though there is a print option. But all that does is a print screen and one page at a time. And that's ridiculous. Also there are no updates even though there is an update option. Maybe this is a price we pay for purchasing a first publication but then who's got time for the third. Printing capability by chapter or marked or wrong questions is an essential. If the publisher wish To release an incomplete product then they should at least give you the option to open the test file in a text format so that you can print them. I give it 5 stars for contents and 1 for the software.
