Rating: Summary: Good introduction Review: If you don't want to be an ABAP expert, but still want to write simple programs and reports, this is the book for you.No prior knowledge required!
Rating: Summary: Readable Introduction to ABAP/4 But Can't Comprehend German Review: Some literature in the CD accompanying this book comes only in German language, without accompanying English version. Good introduction by this readable book itself to ABAP/4, though.
Rating: Summary: The book's good but for people with prior prog. experience Review: The authors dwell more in theory rather than being practical. The examples used cannot be related to an SAP implementation although they do a good job of elucidating ABAP/4 concepts. An entry level book is a must-read for someone who's new to ABAP/4 programming.
Rating: Summary: Good introduction to SAP's Programming language Review: The book gives a good introduction to the in and outs of SAP's programming language. For people allready familiar with other programming languages this book is easy to read. Unfortunately the book does not spend a lot of time on logical databases and its structures; a key factor to program effectively in SAP. The CD is disapointing, half of the presentations are in German and are very much focused on the financial accomplishments of SAP AG
Rating: Summary: Introduction to ABAP/4 Programming Language Review: The book is basically an introduction one only for people with a little bit experiences. It covers elementary information about ABAP/4, GUIs, screens, and functions. The authors try to address the issues about ABAP/4 and SAP as good as possible. But they fail to do that. Many of its information in the book may subject to making confusion to new SAP programmers. Some descriptions are repetitive about theory and programming importance but does not focus on details and give major examples. Overall, the book is so good as it declares it is an immediate and advanced book for experience professionals. For people who are already familiar with ABAP/4 and SAP, it is actually useless.
Rating: Summary: A Good General Introduction but a bad reference book Review: This book is a very good general introduction to the basic ABAP concepts. However there appears to be a serious lack of depth to the book as well.
( I now know how to generate a report but how do I change the Character pitch in the middle of the report ??? )
A behind the scenes explination of what is happening while not strictly useful would have been more helpfull in provding a better understanding of the overall structure.
(The architecture appendix being too limeted)
CD examples were also very basic without any inherently useful programs being present.Very little mention was also made of implied standards in SAP.
On the whole the book was quite disappointing.
Maybe a 2 book pack with more depth would have been better.

Rating: Summary: Book for beginners Review: This book is nothing but introduction to ABAP/4 prog. It does not go into details of it. I would recommend this book only for the beginners and not for experts. Amit
Rating: Summary: A good Introduction to ABAP/4 but lack of Depth. Review: This book provides a good overview for someone who is a beginner. But the book doesn't treat ABAP/4 comprehensively. Many topics need to be explained in detail. --- Avinash Mulye. Price Waterhouse management Consulting.
Rating: Summary: ABAP programmer Review: This book was used by SAP as the textbook for their workbench class when I took it in 1997. I still have and refer to it once in a while today. For a beginner who needs a good introduction to ABAP syntax it is still good. One downside is that it uses the SE38 editor instead of the new SE80 version. But that does not stop you from doing the examples.
