Summary: Good, but not the best
Review: I learned how to program about a year before I bought this book. I bought this book because I just couldn't remember all the little specifics of some codes. After I got it home and started trying to use it, I realized I also needed the Microsoft Visual Basic Reference Library. At the end of every section in this book, it says, 'For more information on....look at the....section in the reference library.' I kind of wish I had looked through the book some more before I bought it some I would know that, but I didn't. This book is still helpful when I'm just trying to do a little something, but I found that I use the reference library more and more.

Summary: Not for beginner but good reference
Review: I like to start with this line " IT'S NOT FOR BEGINNER" . The 2nd example of this book is misprinted and can't run - very confusing if you start from scratch

If you are a beginner , get a book from Gary Cornell, John Smiley .

One book is never enough to learn about VB , that's when this book comes in handy - got some misunderstandings , turn to this book for reference, this book does an excellent job as a reference book -

Some people judge this book really low just because it is free online or included in VB 6 - that's not fair - you judge the content of the book, not by the fact that you can get it somewhere else for free . Beside - who wants to stare at a screen reading a 900 pages book , not me .

Summary: Good Book, but Not Complete
Review: I started doing VB back on Win 3.1 and had lost touch with it after severals years. I had to begin to relearn the new improved versions of VB now for a summer job i had received. I picked up this book, and for the most part the information was very good. However the main problem i have with this book, is that if you are ever looking for more indepth information into it, the book refers you to "the Language Reference" or one of the other reference library books. I understand that you cannot have all the info in this book, but being refered to another MS book just bugged me. I mean the knowledge being online, they could have given the exact URL to find the info, instead of trying to get you to buy a 70dollar reference manual.

THe information in this book is more of an overview of all the different components, and have helped me out of a lot of binds over the time. This book is not for someone new to VB or to programming in general, there are plenty of books and online refs for those.

I have since bought the reference library, and without that as an accompanment to this book, it would have been very difficult to get most of the knowledge I have needed for my programs.

If you are looking for a good standalone VB book, look elsewhere, if you are looking for a good reference book for a outside assistance, this could be your answer.

Summary: Quick, short, and informative
Review: I've sifted through just about all the Interdev books(including everything from Wrox to VI Unleashed and Learn VI In 24Hours). All of them are excessively lengthy, using too many words to explain extremely simple concepts (VI, after all, is not too difficult of a program to use). This book is extremely concise and delivers a multitude of topics in <500 pages (vs 800+ for others)...It goes through the basics as well as some advanced topics, and all the information is easy to find and time saving. You don't waste time reading about the author's programming philosophy, history, and all the useless fluff that comes with big thick books. I highly recommend it as a starting point before you go through any other VI book. Save yourself time and money and just order this book if you want to learn Interdev.

Summary: VB 6.0 Programmers Guide not for programmers
Review: If you are a programmer and looking for a good guide and/or reference, do not buy this book! The examples are few and not very good. The book does not go beyond VB in explainations, or lead you to additional reference material. Don't waste your money.

Summary: Not for Newbies
Review: If your a newbie to Visual Basic do not buy this book! This book in geared towards the intermediate to advanced programmer I have been using VB for several years and take it from me, don't buy it. Even for the intermediate programmers this book makes numerous references to the Library Reference, If your serious on vb then get it too otherwise don't bother, try a website.

Summary: Sub-Standard
Review: In the first sample app they have you writing code that doesn't function. They fail to mention that a listbox is required, yet they have you writing code to clear a list box. If they can't get the first, very basic sample app correct, what good are they. A complete waste of time and money.
