Rating: Summary: Excellent book for learning VB 6 Review: The book covers in detail VB 6 syntax and also describes the VB6 IDE very well.Though, the chapter on ActiveX should cover more material. All in all, good ref book for beginners & intermediate VB developers.
Rating: Summary: Try Another Book Review: There are several books avilable .. I think the one must be the last one to buy.. Try Visual Basic 6 Black book .. or other books.. this books speaks too much...
Rating: Summary: A Surprisingly Good Smorgasbord Review: This book covers in only 700+ pages an amazingly large number of topics. Simple Windows Programs, how to match the brackets in the editor, creating bitmaps, assembler generation of the optimizer, COM, MFC, ATL.... The only thing really missing is an absolute beginners instruction on how to use this specific compiler to do the C++ excercises. Anyhow VC misses an important wizard here too. All is explained well and can be grasped with ease. The author is trustworthy and nobody seriously expects that C++ and Windows can be truly explained in anything less than many thousand pages and many, many month accompanying practise.
Rating: Summary: Good for learning Visual Basic in a non story telling style Review: This book is good for programmers and has a brief intoduction to all the controls, methods and properties in Visual basic. It also tells of what you can do with the different features in Visual Basic but not in a story telling manner. May be that is why some may not find it appealing and interesting to read. In all it is a good book from the people who were involved in the building of VB.
Rating: Summary: Excellent for those with a basic understanding of VB Review: This book IS NOT an intro to VB book. It is an excellent guide to all of the features of the language in a direct, no fluff way. The chapters on programming with objects and COM (or ActiveX if you like) are a must-read for any serious VB programmer. Yes, it is a reprint of the online docs, but I find it hard to read online docs on the couch or an airplane with my PC and 19" monitor.
Rating: Summary: Good Book For Newbies Review: This book is only good for people who just got VB 6.0 for the first time and are new to programming. Other than that I would not recommend this book to anyone of moderate to advanced level because this book is just a reprint of the online help included in the MSDN files. Bottom-line, good book for beginners to have it in text, however anyone who has a grasp for programming I would not recommend it.
Rating: Summary: A waste of money Review: This book is the on line help in print. Don't waste your money if you have MSDN files installed!
Rating: Summary: Useless Review: This book is useless. I read that it's the online help printed. But it's much worse. It can't be used because it lacks an index and of course a search option. It's a waste of money that you won't even be able to sell later.
Rating: Summary: Not for Newbies Review: This is a good step-by-step book for learning Visual Basic 6.0 Professional Edition. There are some minor mistakes in this book but overall it is a very good book. If you follow along, you should not have a lot of problems. Please note, this book is geared toward the "Professional Edition", you will need to have a strong understanding of the features of "Enterprise Edition" in order to pass the certification exams. Subjects such as the Visual Component Manager, Visual SourceSafe, MTS/COM+ are not covered or bearly covered. You will need other books in order to get a more thorough knowledge of these subjects. Visual Basic Professional Edition and/or Visual Studio Professional Edition are excellent for SOHO (Small office, home office). I have Visual Studio 6.0 Professional Edition installed on my home PC and I use this book to solve some of the issues that arrises.
