Summary: Excellent, both in content and price
Review: I was in the bookstore just looking around, not really planning on buying anything, and this just lept out at me. I have experience in HTML, but was using older books as reference. A quick look into the first few chapters of this book and I was hooked and bought it. It is what I consider to be the most complete and up-to-date reference on the subject of web programming, including HTML4, DHTML Java, Javascript, CGI and PERL scripting, cascading style sheets. It also teaches the basics to all of these concepts, assuming no previous knowledge, prefect for anyone. The Appendix is especially great as it covers EVERY sinlge tag and attribute for Win95/98 and IE/Netscape. It is clear, concise and more importantly, NOT dry and technical, but interesting to read as it is compiled from wide sources, and has practical example to guid you. Excellent job Sybex!!

Summary: Excellent book for people at all levels
Review: I was very impressed with this book. I'm new to web development and am not a programmer by background, yet I found the book very easy to follow. It was interesting and gave just the right amount of background on each topic so you could understand the theory behind it. It then gave practical examples which were easy to follow. One thing I particularly liked is that it gave just enough background in all the aspects that I was able to see where I needed additional reference material.

Much better than most computer books that are twice the price!

Summary: ANOTHER QUALITY BARGAIN FROM SYBEX
Review: In computing, most of the Sybex's 'Complete' series offer the best value for money. This "HTML Complete" testifies to this fact. The book simplified every aspect HTML.
With chapters that include Web typography, Dynamic HTML, XML, ASP, Perl, JavaScripts and so on, readers are bound to discover which tools are best suited for a particular purpose or circumstance. Apart from discussing how to code HTML, there is in-depth coverage of basic syntax, as well as how to optimize graphics employed in Web creations and publications.
Comprehensive suggestions on how to manipulate websites with contemporary technologies like audio and video were included.
This is a very useful HTML textbook. Anybody who reads it, will value the way it simplified interactive databases, secure transactions, and many programming methods. It was designed for all user-level; and I will not hesitate to recommend it for you.

Summary: FINALLY - A USABLE BOOK
Review: Most books are written by people with a PHD to impress other people with a PHD. NOT THIS BOOK! You can actually use this book. Of the 1000 pages, 300 are pure reference. Tags and what they mean are clearly listed. My level of programming ability is intermediate. I'f you have zero experience, this is still a good book. If you combine this book with free tutorials you'll be on your way...What a steal! Good Luck!

Summary: Excellent Book, Excellent Value!
Review: There's criteria I follow when buying a tech book for learning:
1. Does it have sufficient pictures so you know what the author is talking about?
2. Does it have an index? (Believe it or not some books don't! Like many of the Microsoft Reference books.)
3. Does it have step-by-step tutorials?
4. Does it have a glossary?

This book fulfilled all of these criteria which make learning much much easier. It has just the right balance of theory and practicals.

I'm an ASP programmer and I can make magic happen when it comes to dynamically building a web page or working with a database. But if you ever look at my pages you'd say they are the most boring looking pages you've ever seen.
So I got this book to learn more about dressing up pages and to learn those other tags I never took the time to learn that can make my work look better.
This book has great stuff in it, I've learned so much, so many attributes I never knew existed.
The reference section in the back is invaluable. For each tag and attribute the book describes it and gives an example of how to use it. There are examples all through the book that you can use immediately.
Thank you Sybex for compiling such a great book. Sybex compiled this book from the best of probably 8 books and put them all into one volume.

Summary: Not exactly complete, but a great reference regardless
Review: This book is a terrific companion for web developers, whether beginning or experienced. I've worked with HTML for years, but there are always slightly more obscure tags that you just can't quite remember how to use, or the exact name of the tag. This is how this book comes in handy.

In my opinion, it's not really all that complete in depth, but it is rather complete in breadth. By that I mean to say that if you need a tutorial, you may want other more in depth materials on the topic you're learning, such as cascading style sheets. But once you've done something once, and you just need a refresher, this book is a handy reference guide.

Summary: Perfect format for graphic designers!
Review: This book is light weight and very portable in the briefcase. I take it everywhere I might need to deal with the web. Very user friendly with comprehensive index to find information. It covers practically all topics regarding excellent web technologies (including perl, unix and CGI and xml) with comprehensive definitions to make the not-so-technical individuals grab an instant understanding . Brilliant HTML and CSS reference for people who don't have much time to spend hours finding quick solutions for front end coding.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: HTML Deprecated
Review: This book is not bad, but by the author's own admission, much of what is being explained is deprecated. The book is quite good at telling you what NOT to use, but keeps referring the reader to Chapt 16 (CSS). Unfortunately the CSS chapter does not show all the correct ways to implement the deprecated features (use of justification - left, right, center - in tables, for example).

One nice feature in the book was the "Widely Supported" yes/no indicator for HTML syntax in the Appendix A.

I think the author should have spent more time on non-deprecated usage of HTML and CSS, instead of saying "Here's how to do this, but don't do it this way." This book is probably useful to someone who is trying to READ older HTML code, but is not so useful for someone trying to write new HTML code.

In summary, although it has useful information surrounding the use of HTML, this book should probably be re-titled to "HTML Deprecated", or "Reading Deprecated HTML Code", or alternatively needs a much-expanded section on use of CSS.
