Summary: Second edition is better
Review: A lot of companies including Apress tried to saturate the market with .Net books while Visual Studio.Net was in the Beta. This book is an example of that. There are 2 editions for this book, one is based on the Beta 2 and the other on the initial release of Visual Studio.Net (1.0). The Beta book has several noticeable errors and the editing was a rush job. Some of the examples resemble the on-line help and may be screen shots from the on-line help. The on-line help has improved tremendously since the Beta. The 2nd edition has corrected most of those errors and the editor has done a higher quality job. The chapters on disconnected databases (Chapters 9 thru 12) and XML (Chapter 22) are very good for understanding some of the new features of ADO.Net. Microsoft made several changes to ADO.Net and Visual Basic.Net while these products were Beta, so you want to buy the 2nd edition only. The Beta book may mislead you on several key issues.

Summary: nive work
Review: A simple yet detailed book written by a very talented writer. I read the first edition and the second edition is by far a much better book, in particular in the way the material is presented. It does look as if the author needed some experience with the first book to really write some good stuff and he certainly delivers with the second book. I hope he'll do third with the new whidbey stuff coming out.

My favorite chapter is 19 and if you need a book that teaches you about database programming with VB .net and ADO.netb then this book is for you.

Summary: Another Dissapointed Reader
Review: After having read two books on VB.Net I assumed this would cover details about programming database applications with VB.Net. Yet after lots of basic material, and a good beginning on VB.Net database information it seemed suddenly done with that and on to other topics such as messages queuing and active directory.

Summary: Good precise writing
Review: Although this is a somewhat old book, ie. it covers 1.0 of the framework its still an excellent book about many types of data access with .net, especially ado.net. I can recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn ado.net

Summary: Yes, this is the book I have been looking for
Review: Been through a great number of ADO.NET books, but this is the only one so far that really covers everything I need. Not only does this book cover ADO.NET very well, including the exceptional tables in the appendixes but it also gives me msmq and sqlxml and thats good value. The authors writing style is conscise and accurate and not too dry nor does he fill the book with stupid remarks like some other authors.

Summary: awesome
Review: Good book, good coverage and very detailed explanations. I miss the few changes in the .NET framework 1.1, but the book is still worth 5 stars. I'd like to see more sqlxml coverage in a third edition.

Summary: Excellent mix of database concepts/usage
Review: Great book no doubt. Must the first time I've bought a book that can be used as a reference guide as well as a cover to cover book. I really enjoyed reading the first 4 parts of the book after which I left it for a while. I then continued with what I consider the extra bits, the last few parts of the book, and I must say that after reading the sqlxml chapter I have little doubt about giving this book a 5 star rating. Fantastic job, thomsen.

Summary: Solid to the core
Review: Great book with lots of excellent and USEFUL tips, ADO .NET object model tear out card and best of all: Extremely easy reading. This author is going places in the coming years! BTW, chapter 3 is just perfect.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Very detailed
Review: Great book with really detailed ADO.NET stuff. I must confess that I did know a little bit about ADO.NET before reading this book, but now I know it *ALL*. I am looking forward to reading the chapters on Exchange Server and SQLXML as this have my interest. However, this book is worth every dime even without these chapters. The reference appendixes are just great.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Code do not work
Review: Half of the code dont work. Author needs to update the code to .NET 1.1.
