Rating: Summary: Very well explained Review: I think the author has something to give the programmers of today. The wording he uses is just perfect and it's easy to understand the message he's trying to gte across. Besides that, it was a breeze to read the book and I certainly got a very good intro to ADO .NET and beyond.
Rating: Summary: Does what it says Review: I think this a very solid book. It does exactly what it says; teaches me about ADO.NET, which is what I want. Whether some of the material can be found in MSDN is besides the point. It's the way it's written and structured that counts. I was in doubt about 4 or 5 stars, but the tear-out card made up my mind.
Rating: Summary: Competent writing Review: I think this book is a very good book, based alone on the way the author writes about the various subjects and how he explains some of the more advanced topics. Sure, there are a few things missing like the CommandBuilder class, but that's the same with any book. There was a few things that didn't make sense, but then I downloaded the errata and that did it.
Rating: Summary: Great VB/DB book Review: I was searching for a DB book with VB .NET example code and there are lots of them. A friend recommended this one and I'm glad she did. There's so much information in this book; it's unbelievable. I skipped chapter 1, but chapter 2 was an excellent refresher, as the author states, and I can certainly use this chapter for later reference. I'm an experienced DB developer and I DO know about normal forms, but like many people I forget "things" now and then, so this chapter is a very quick reference. Part II and III are excellent introductions to the two ADO.NET layers and after reading through them, I really understand the concepts of ADO.NET and especially the way it works with disconnected data access. These two parts with apendixes C and D are excellent as reference guides and I can recommend the book just for these chapters/appendixes. Wait, there's more: Stored Procedures, Views, Triggers, exception handling and much more. Truly a book for any serious VB/DB developer.
Rating: Summary: Very Useful Guide to ADO.Net Review: I'd recommend this book to any experienced VB programmer that wishes to get into data access with .Net. This book isn't for beginners. If you've worked with ADO and VB for a time, it should be just right. I've invested in a couple of other Apress books and this one is of similar high quality. Lots of details, good reference material, and easy to read. Nice ADO.Net diagram tear out in the back of the book is a nice bonus.
Rating: Summary: excellent book on concepts Review: If this book were written in C#, I'd give it a 6 star!
Rating: Summary: Top quality Review: If you want to learn about talking to databases with the .NET framework from VB .NET then this is THE book to get. I'm thrilled I bought it as it covers so much ground. This means that I can use for any of my upcoming projects and it possibly saved me one or two trainning sessions. Good work Tmomsen
Rating: Summary: Good starting point for ADO.NET newbie's Review: It starts exactly where I want it to start and guides me through to the more advanced stuff. I saw the Active Directory Stuff, which isn't really me, but I do like the Message Queuing material. That was excellent. I am a fairly decent VB programmer, but the new VB.NET has taken me quite a while to get used to, so I was looking for some good book or other material to teach me ADO.NET, because it is so different to ADO. This book, even with its minor "mistakes" is worth every dime.
Rating: Summary: Great book Review: Looking at the other mixed reviews for both editions of the book you'd think that this isn't that great a book. I'm however really pleased I got my boss to buy it as this simply THE database book for any VB .NET developer. I'm amazed you can squeeze so much information into just under 1,000 pages. I've read the book from start to finish and I love it. Even better, I now use it as a reference, especially chapters 6 to 12. Very good job, Thomsen.
Rating: Summary: Simple, and very easy to understand Review: Not much of a writer myself so i'll keep it short. This is an excellent book for any vb.net developer wishing to understand the basics database programming and more than that. I found myself in need of a reference book as well as cover to cover coverage and I found it in this book.
