Review: It's not the best book about MySQL but it helped me using it with Perl.This book assumes you got basic knowledge of Perl.

Summary: Big Disapointment
Review: I bought this book in hopes that it would teach me mySQL programming in perl. It had several chapters on it's history and installation and then ONE chapter on SQL commands. Also the chapter on Perl and mySQL was extremelly brief and I couldn't follow the examples (I've been programming in perl for 3 years). Overall I'm buying the DuBois book and learning from online tutorials which are much better than this trash and free.

Summary: Sketchy and incomplete
Review: Two thumbs down on this one. The treatment of MySQL and mSQL together is especially confusing. Examples leave much to be desired. The reference section is okay, but not as complete as online documentation. Save your money on this one and buy Paul Dubois' "MySQL" instead.

Review: It bounces around too much. Take my advise on this one. Get "MySql" by Dubois.. a much better book. This one is just pure pathetic. It touches on subjects it needs to go into detail about. The DBI section was HORRIBLE! It assumed you knew things that most people that bought this book didn't. Don't buy this book.. get a quality one.

Summary: Useful
Review: I found this book to be useful. I would have liked more on PHP but PHP is still pretty new stuff. The chapter on database normalization was excellent and was worth the entire purchase price by itself. The security system that MySQL uses is a little confusing if you rely only on the official documentation but this book explains it well.

Review: If this were the only book on MySQL that existed, I'd be pleased, but with the release of MySQL by Paul DuBois, this book has been obsoleted.

Summary: Good book, but not for the novice.
Review: This is not a turtorial book, but a great refernece. I have been using MySQL for a couple of years and before MySQL, I used mSQL. I find this book to be a great point of reference for general mSQL and MySQL use, as well as a reference for on-line use.

Summary: Not up to the O'Reilly standard
Review: This book isn't great. The organization of the material is poor; MySQL and mSQL are mixed together confusingly. I was hoping for more of a tutorial format in the early chapters; the book leaves readers to climb the relatively steep learning curve on their own. The reference section is confusingly laid out-- there's no indication within the section whether a given page is about MySQL or mSQL, making it difficult to look up the particulars of an SQL command. Similarly, PHP and Lite are covered in the same chapter, making it difficult to tell, on any given page, which scripting language you are reading about. One bright spot: Chapter 2, on database design, is really useful and well-written. Too bad the specific technical information couldn't be as well-done. This book might be appropriate for someone with substantial prior RDBMS experience, but with the exception of Chapter 2, it is not for beginners.

Summary: Learn MySQL from the best book!
Review: I have now read the book, MySQL & mSQL - I found this book very helpfull and it gave me the Information I needed to get startet with MySQL. I have been programming Perl for approx. one and a half year now and including MySQL in my Perl scripts was easy with this book.
