Rating: Summary: not good but not bad neither Review: Chapter 2 in this book is pretty good. It takes about database modelling and normalization stuff. The last 1/2 of the book is a good quick ref. Chapter 3 and 4 are the waste on installing mSql and Mysql because all softwares come with a manual and a readme. One thing I learned from this book is the concept of database and on joining tables.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book up to the usual Oreilly standards Review: This book is a basic introduction to databases and administration, with a strong focus on Mysql and Msql. It does not go into deep details, but gives you a great overview on administration, database/table design and also writing programs that utilize Mysql and Msql. This book is a great along side with the Mysql manual, but should not be used as a standalone resource. If you remember you are buying a nutshell book, then you will not be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: disappointing, but still glad I bought it Review: The book is disappointing. It seems poorly organized, lackingin focus, and hastily produced. The Mysql documentation and tutorialsdo a better job of clearly describing how to create a database, tables, run queries, etc. The chapter on Perl APIs looks like it will be helpful. I don't regret having bought this book--it's just that I've come to expect more from O'Reilly.
Rating: Summary: Don't waste your money on this book!!! Review: I bought this book because of the high ratings of the early reviews here. Now, I can not agree more with those people who told the truth about this book in those recent reviews. This book needs a focus on Mysql. And, it does not have references to some important functions such as 'die()' and 'printf()' in PHP, so you cann't say it is comprehensive, either. After all, this is a disappointing effort by O'reilly.
Rating: Summary: An excellence reference for mySQL Review: This book is an excellent reference for anyone who uses mySQL. It has a nice introduction into database theory and several sections devoted to using mySQL with programming languages such as C, PHP, and CGI programming. It's well worth having as a supplement to the base documentation that comes with mySQL.
Rating: Summary: It is NOT focused on using MySQL Review: This book covers everything revolving around MySQL except the engine itself and its supporting programs. It really should have stuck to documenting, in detail, how to use mysql, mysqladmin, mysqlaccess and how to use the APIs. Most everything was either a straight copy of the program help output or the MySQL documentation. It provided almost zero insights on using MySQL specifically. I understand more about the theory of MySQL permissions after reading this book, but I did not learn how to modify those permissions. They also completely missed an important point about auto-incrementing fields that I learned the hard way playing with MySQL. You are better off just reading the online documentation than buying this book. It's simply a waste of money.
Rating: Summary: a useful survey, but lacks depth Review: This book has helped me learn the various ways to employ MySQL, but falls short as a reference. For example, from the PHP3 reference section you would think that PHP3 has no 'printf' function. The section on MySQL's security/privilege features attempts to explain how it works, but failed for me -- more examples would have helped. Unlike most other O'Reilly books that I use, this one does not have source code for the examples available on the Web.
Rating: Summary: Excellent MySQL referance but it needed more Perl Examples Review: This book got me off the ground in a hurry with MySQL, but could have used more examples of how to use MySQL with Perl. Still, it is a must have for the library.
Rating: Summary: This is a "Must Have" Book for DB programmers and admin Review: If you want to learn more about MySQL or mSQL, this book is for you! The authors did an excellent job with the SQL tutorial; the book is easy to understand and is very comprehensive. Even the most experienced programmer will find new and interesting material in this excellent book.
Rating: Summary: Not for Windows-only users. Review: Just a word of warning for those who hope that this book will assist them with MySQL for Windows... there is barely even a mention of the Windows version in this book. If you aren't a little Unix-savvy you might have some difficulty in translating the Unix-specific instructions and descriptions to Windows, and if you're having troubles getting MySQL set up to run on Windows, you're on your own as this book doesn't help at all. This isn't a bash of the book, and in truth I haven't gotten too far into it yet, but as I'm running MySQL on my Windows box I noticed right away that there was almost zero Win-specific info, and thought I would post this to try to save someone out here from buying the book thinking it'd help them out with Windows-specific issues.
