Rating: Summary: Informative Review: Kirupa has written a good book about FrontPage. Besides the nice content, his helpful responses via e-mail and his forum were most beneficial. The book's structure is the usual with the user being introduced to the basics and then channeled to more complex concepts. I had some minor difficulties with certain portions, but the author replied back quickly with a fix. This is a great FrontPage resource for all users - the level of support the author personally provides is exceptional. This book and Jim Buyen's FP2002 Inside Out are all that one needs to master FrontPage.
Rating: Summary: Great FrontPage book for All Users Review: Mr. Chinnathambi wrote an excellent book regarding Microsoft's FrontPage 2002. I bought this book upon reading the excellent reviews, and I could not be more happy that I did. As long-time fan of HTML and Web programming, I was amazed at how much FrontPage 2002 can accomplish quickly. This book helped me greatly in conquering all of FP's features. Upon reading Mr. Chinnathambi's book, FrontPage 2002: ABG, I learned about many features, tips, and techniques that I never knew FrontPage even had supported such as server side includes, asp database queries, and more. This book does a wondeful job at presenting information concisely. I had a question and e-mailed the author himself, and he was more than kind enough to respond back with a thorough reply that solved my problem. If you are looking for a great book that combines great information and top-notch help, I highly recommend this book for anyone. Beginners will enjoy the step-by-step information, intermediate users will enjoy the editing information, and advanced users will enjoy the information on databases, external css files, and more! Regards, DHTML Dude
Rating: Summary: A "Must Have" for the beginners. Review: Starting from introducing the FrontPage interface to integrating ActiveX controls and Java Applets into your web pages, the book has taken into consideration each and every aspect of Web Designing and Development the developers should be aware of. I really liked those 1-Minute Drills at the end of all major topics, and the Mastery Checks (with answers at the end of the book) and the Projects at the end of every module. I am sure they'll help you apply whatever you learned and make sure that you are on track, going in the right direction. All illustrations are clear and concise, and I am pretty sure they'll will help you a lot in getting yourself familiar with everything you can do with FrontPage 2002 at ease. "FrontPage 2002 : A Beginner's Guide" - Yes, an excellent guide and a "Must Have" for the beginners.
Rating: Summary: Good in parts Review: The author is clearly a great designer (look at his own site - referred to in the book), and has done his best to make Fontpage 2002 understandable. The five-star reviews here seem to endorse this view. BUT, note that the five star reviews are mainly by experienced HTML programmers or users of earlier versions of Frontpage. I have never built a web site before, but I am not a computer-illiterate. So I was disappointed to find that I could not follow all of the author's steps. I was occasionally frustrated when I tried to follow the author's steps, only to discover that I was lost. Part of the blame must - as usual - go to Microsoft rather than the author for giving misleading names to features of Frontpage. (The spelling errors are not as bad as one other reviewer claimed, but they do make one question the thoroughness of the editor.) I think the editor and the author should have sat down with a few people, focus-group style, who are eager to design their own first-ever web page and who are experienced users of the basic packages (Word, Excel, Explorer, Outlook) and worked through it step by step.
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Guide for FrontPage 2002 Review: The book FrontPage 2002: A Beginner's Guide by Kirupa Chinnathambi will be a boon for both beginners as well as experienced persons. Integrated throughout the book are many learning tools that facilitate easy learning of the concepts as well as techniques. Goals at the beginning of the chapters, Hints, Notes, 1-minute drills, Ask the Expert items, Mastery Checks and Cautions are all well thoughtout techniques that will assist any one interested in mastering the FrontPage 2002. At the end of each chapter is a project which provides a comprehensive training in the use of the techniques learned in the chapter. The book has been written in a very easily readable style. At the same time, it contains almost everything about FrontPage 2002; nothing important is left out. The author's experience on designing webpages clearly shows in the chapter on webpage design. It is an excellent way to teach the techniques of building a good webpage by comparing two sites and bringing out the good features of each. As a long time educator of technical subjects, I can easily see the effectiveness of this superb writing. The discussions on such advanced topics as animation, web components and interactive forms make this book suitable not only for beginners but also for experienced persons. Overall, this is a comprehensive book, excellently written with the reader in mind. It should be in the hands of any one who wants to learn FrontPage 2002.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book If You're New to FrontPage Review: This books is excellent if you are new to FrontPage or web design. The book is easy to read, provides good examples, and covers the key features of FrontPage plus a little more: website design, organization, images, tables, forms (email, confirmation pages, etc.). Though much of FrontPage's features (font, inserting images, tables, etc.) works similarly to MS Word, PowerPoint, or Publisher, I found Kirupa's book useful. STRENGTHS 1. Easy to read and well-organized intro to the basics of FrontPage. 2. Kirupa has a website ... that serves as a valuable (and free) companion to the book. There, you can download examples of FrontPage functions and designs mentioned throughout his book. There's also discussion forum, among other information. 3. Kirupa personally answers questions via email. I sent him an email with a FrontPage question last night and got a response back from this afternoon. That's impressive. OPPORTUNITY AREAS I would rate the book with five stars if: 1. It included a very basic glossary of the key tools and inputs used in FrontPage. Kirupa provides excellent "how to" instructions to do a very specific task, e.g. "Click here, then click there, etc." However, in many cases, FrontPage gives you many other options within the same tool bar function. Without a glossary, it's hard to know why he chose not to click on the other options available. 2. I think there may be an over-reliance on learning FrontPage by rote. I like Kirupa's "training seminar approach", but the shortfall is that we rely a lot on his downloadable examples. Again, we follow his step-by-step instructions, but we don't really know why we click on "this" and not on "that". Overall, the benefits of the book outweigh the opportunities. One must keep in mind that the book is meant for beginners, and Kirupa does a solid job here. I guess Kirupa taught the basics of FrontPage so quickly and easily that one can't help but want a detailed glosary in order to start learning some of the more advanced functions!
