Rating: Summary: A Must-Have Spinner for the Windows Professional! Review: As a computer professional who works with several hundred pc's running Windows 98, this is an essential tool for me. It has helped me solve countless problems with our computers since we migrated to Win 98. In my opinion, this book, and a subscription to Microsoft's Technet are the resources that people in our field simply MUST have.

Rating: Summary: Invaluable tool for Windows 98 Beta Testers Review: As aa a member of the Microsoft Windows 98 Beta team for many months, I was amazed how much I could not find or did not know about Windows 98 by using only the official Beta sites of Microsoft for BETA testers only and of course Windows 98 itself. This book, The Windows 98 Resource Kit Beta Release saved my neck many a time when I was in a precarious situation with no solutions in the Newsgroups or from Microsoft. You have to do that all alone and would not be possible without the use of the Resource Kit.
Rating: Summary: Windows 98 Beta tester speaks out Review: Being a windows98 beta tester I can tell you what 98 is like. It is MUCH better than the stupid beta3 preview edition. Many bugs were fixed since beta3, and 98 is looking really good, running faster etc. so quit your whining.
Rating: Summary: Amazing book and amazing operating system Review: I got my computer to dual boot with Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0 Workstation and then went to town with it. I configured my desktop to have a really neat Sherlock Holmes look to it and then prepared to install all of the drivers necessary to make my printer and modem run. To my surprise everything I had was already on the operating system and I did not have to load a single driver-true plug and play!. I then connected to the internet with a new provider in a snap all the major ISP's were present so if you want a new account then this is the way to do it. Then I ran the thing through some tests and it really did seem faster than 95. Microsoft has really outdone themselves with this OS. The only critisism I have for this OS is that it really is not compatible with Windows NT at all and all files must be present on both operating systems to work(no sharing). Other than that the book and OS get a big thumbs up from this reviewer.
Rating: Summary: I liked the O/S, now I like the book. Review: I very much like Windows 98. As a beta tester I found that launching and closing programs were faster and more reliable. At 1509 pages, including the Appendices, but not the Index, there is too much to comment on in the books entirety; but, the chapters I have used were complete and usable. The information was reliable and operative. Its conciseness makes it effective for the Beginner and the Expert. Get it or borrow it!
Rating: Summary: win98 Review: i'm a beta tester for apple and microsoft,i recomend buying a mac if you domt want any headaches,win95 was full of bugs when it was released and win98 will be too,but you will be able to buy the upgrades to fix the bugs.the mac on the other hand,i beta tested os8 found very few bugs, the minor ones that were there, apple offered a free upgrade.i like macs,i use both a mac and a pc,and prefer the mac,and all you "macs suck"pc people, have you ever used one?its really plug and play vs. plug and pray.
Rating: Summary: O/S, Well Done Review: I've been in the IT profession for some 32 years. I've read, written, adnd edited many technical reference manuals which we now call Resource Kits, but I've never until now seen a guide so well put together. Now I can find the 'REAL" answer(s) without going from chapter to chapter or book to book. Adding a positive plus, it's fun, it's easy and it everything any IT professional needs to build, install, maintain, troubleshoot ANY PROBLEM along with provide you with the ture understanding on how an Operating System and related component work independently as well as together.Thank you most kindly for taking the time to read this. I only wish there was a Volume II, but what could you put in it? L. G. Mathis
Rating: Summary: Buy this book Review: If you are purchasing this book for the software, don'tbother. The release is stable, but stale at this point (the cabs werecreated in December 1997). If you are looking for a comprehensive reference for the next version of Windows, this is it. From deployment to tweaking to trouble shooting, this weighty tome is a "must have" for any serious administrator. However, this is not the final release of the code and Windows has undergone many minor changes since this publication (it comes with build 15xx and build 1723.3 is out now with dozens of interim releases). As far as those "reviews" that simply bash Microsoft -- this isn't the forum; review the book.
