Rating: Summary: A Must-Have Spinner for the Windows Professional! Review: Microsoft Windows 98 Resource Kit has indeed proven its worth:- a much-needed troubleshooting manual with explicit and immaculate examples on how to solve certain so-called 'everyday' problems which you may encounter in your usage of Microsoft's latest OS release, Microsoft Windows 98. Is indeed a 'worth-it' bargain and a 'must-have' for those of you out there who are worked out by banging and cursing your system whenever it crashes!
Rating: Summary: Windows 98 is good.... Review: Most of the people who knock Windows 98 do not understand the purpose of the Consumer Preview Program. They aren't asking us to beta test the program, just to give us some hands on before the actual release. The only problem I had with it was it not recognizing an internal modem...but it was a Packard Hell OEM model(oops...Bell)...so that's who I blame anyway. Most of the people who knock Win98 do so because it's popular to do so...or had one bad experience at installing Windows 95, usually their fault anyway for not following instructions. Or just hate Microsoft, or Bill Gates, for being rich.
The book and the software are excellent, and bug-free thus far. It was far smoother than installing Windows 95. People whine about upgrading the user interface..but why change what works. And Windows 95 does work, if you learn to use it properly. Most of the changes to 98 are under the hood, finishing the things that Microsoft wanted to do under Win95, but couldn't because of the dumb consent decree with DOJ.
Buy it, you won't be disappointed...yeah, so it'll ship in June anyway, but at least you can wait until October or so, and find a good deal on it...or wait to get it when you replace your system normally. Your beta copy will hold you over till then.
Rating: Summary: 1 Formatted hard drive later... Review: Okay, I tried this. And I'm no slouch at making my PC work through all sorts of convoluted Windows setups, but this was impossible. I thought IE4 was bad, when it sheered off about 100Mhz from my machine speed, but this so called Operating System crippled my P2. A triumph of style over substance. I performed the standard fall over test on it. (If you leave a PC with Win 95 on it, running for 24 hours *without doing anything* it will crash all on it's own.) At least Windows 98 doesn't do this. But that's about the only good thing I have to say about it. Only upgrade Windows 95 to 98 if you're interested in seeing your old Win 95 bugs, replaced with some exciting new Win 98 bugs.
Rating: Summary: JUST WHEN I NEEDED YOU - YOU CAME ALONG Review: Since buying my computer over 18 months ago, I had nothing but conflicts and the computer just stop working in most program's - Windows 98 help me gain back the power over my machine - and not the makers who only whanted to try and charge each time for even a new driver - 5 day's and its still working, without even needing the makers own disk's/ drivers etc. this software is for everyone and there's even a Microsoft site for different manufactors to send there updates - ( called updates ) drivers - bug fix's etc. how many will ? WINDOWS 98 helps you become more independent - well done Microsoft.
Rating: Summary: The ultimate "readme.txt" file! Review: Someone using Windows 98 without the Windows 98 Resource Kit on hand is at a disadvantage. No other book provides the latest "behind-the-scenes" information about the operating environment we've all come to love....and hate at the same time! Who else but Microsoft (the perpetrator of all of Windows' nastiest bugs) can walk us through the intricacies of Windows 98 and help us make sense of this latest version of the planet's most pervasive piece of software.

Rating: Summary: Heavy on networking Review: The book is extremely extensive on networking, and would appeal to a systems manager at a company who wanted a "basic-to-medium" level depth in knowledge of just about all of Windows 98. You will not be a computer tech with this book, but you'll sure know a lot of neat things about windows 98. In my opinion, they should have divided the book into one for networking, and one for those who just need it for troubleshooting pc's. And then in each book, provide a "medium and advanced" depth in knowledge on each subject. Here, one who just troubleshoots pc's will pay alot for a little information, some of which may be valuable, but otherwise, it may lack the depth required in some necessary information. Why didn't Uncle Billy do this? Why, to keep his phone techs employed!

Rating: Summary: The Undisputed Champion of Windows 98 Reference Books Review: The bottom line is that every other book written on Windows 98, including the other Microsoft titles, is merely a footnote to the Windows 98 Resource Kit. It's an automatic read for computer professionals and the one you buy first, whether you are a pro or want to be one. It is a good bet that many of the other Windows 98 books out there were written with the Beta version of this Resource Kit close at hand. It is the primary source of information on Windows 98, direct from Redmond. Where else would you look for the correct information on a Redmond product? Sheesh!
