Summary: Excellent Overview of Networking
Review: For the price, this is the best value on the market in the area of networking. This book presents a fairly in-depth look at networking, and is a compilation of several Sybex texts. Its level can sometimes be simplistic, but having passed A+ and Microsoft's Net Essential, this would have been a good prep book. If you have never read a book on networking read this one first. If you have passed intro-level networking, pass this one by.

Summary: Mixed feelings on this...
Review: I bought this book as I felt myself reasonably conversant with networking technology and in need of a quick book to help fill any gaps in my knowledge - The book was some help, but I'm sure there are others out there that are better - I wouldn't call it a complete guide since it lightly touches every area of networking - If you know your networking stuff, then you wouldn't need this guide, on the otherhand, if you don't know its size might appear frightening, but it could prove of some use, perhaps complimenting some other book...

Summary: Comprehensive and readable for wide audience
Review: I enjoyed this book: clear language, accessible for people outside the field, and covers all aspects of networking. I would even call it a "killer textbook" on networking, because you don't need to learn much more after finishing it. Thanks, Kari Brooks and Sybex.

Summary: Great broad review of networking
Review: I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants a broad understanding of networking and its relevant technologies (VPNs). You need a pretty good grasp of packet switching/the Internet after the elementary first chapter. If you're totally new to technology, this is not the book for you.

Because I needed to learn about this subject thoroughly and deeply, I feel this book gave me a great "nuts and bolts" background for the underlying theories behind all the complicated things you're reading about today. Also, I think the section on the OSI model was extremely helpful and in-depth.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the quality of the paper made it a little difficult to read. But I understand it helped to make the cost reasonable, so I'm okay with that!

Summary: Too light
Review: This book tells the reader little more than he/she would learn by typing " -?" at the shell prompt.

The binder says, "1000 pages for $19.99." That should tell you what you're getting.

I should have bought an old textbook or something. That would be much more fulfilling.
