Rating: Summary: Excellent for Beginners Review: Takes you thru a "natural" progression in Learning VB 5.0. Great for beginners, except does not offer a chapter on Object Oriented Programming
One of the few books where codes actually work!!Maybe some excercises (with solutions provided on the CD-ROM) could have added more flavor to it.
Rating: Summary: One or two minor errors but excellent overall... Review: All the exercises took into account the environment changes made in the previous exercise. Very important. It lacks some in-depth explanation of the code, but it's fine for a first time programmer. It a new programmer like me feel comfortable with VB5; a value in itself. Recommended.

Rating: Summary: it's only so-so Review: Although the book does fairly well in the begining, it later fails to educate in the end. If you only want to be able to do what the book teaches you to do, without understanding what it is you are doing- then buy it. It truely lacks educating, leaving beginers (this includes me)behind. Why do you put the code there? How do you debug?(the book tried to teach this- but failed) Some of the programs if typed literal- don't work. The truely sad thing is when you try to do exercises on your own- you can't. That is, any exercise that requires any understand! Pass it up!
Rating: Summary: The book is well-written, but does not cover much ground Review: First, my objective is to get certified in VB 6.0, and it seems that while this is a well-written book, it does not really cover that much ground. Why is it that MicroSoft can't come out with a book like the Waite Group's? I have also tried McKelvy's book, and I would not recommend it, first because he doesn't give you guidance through the code as well as Halverson, and second, the CDROM practice test did not work right. I'll stick with the Waite Group's book, thank you.
Rating: Summary: Well-structured learning kit Review: I am experienced with a previous version of VB and needed something to help me learn the new VB 5 environment. This book got me up to speed very quickly. It is basic enough to cover things I might have missed, but comprehensive enough to be of value to experienced programmers
Rating: Summary: Excellent First Step In VB5 Review: I found this book to be easy to read. Practical and interesting. I have never programmed before reading this book. Now I am writing VB5 programs that are connecting to databases
Rating: Summary: Well Done Review: I had never done anything even remotely related to programming before I read this book, and yet I was able to use it as a springboard to Visual C++ and J++. By the fourth chapter I was able to create marketable applications using purely original code. Covers everything and if you don't want Everything it gives you that option too. I recommend this book to anyone who has No experience but is interested (even a little, it grabs those who aren't sometimes) in learning. Have fun, I did.

Rating: Summary: Best Beginner's Book Review: I have purchased several beginning VB books and all except this one left me asking "Huh?" after a few chapters. This book was clear all the way through and made me feel like I was really getting somewhere. I've been hooking to some Access databases and generally having fun finally. If you're a beginner, you MUST get this book!
