Summary: Good book, limited scope.
Review: At least better than 3 stars

The book is good for getting across what it wants to, but does not cover all material. I used this and the Nash IDG one. Neither had all the information (like NWLink and both were severly lacking in the troubleshooting dept.) However, they both provide enough to get through practice exams quickly. That way you can focus on questions pertaining to information they don't provide. Take notes and do as many practice tests as you can, I did and owe my 900 score to it. Beware the new drag and drop questions! The included CD was questionable.

My test was 30 questions, non-adaptive.

Summary: Very good book
Review: Don't let the title steer you away!

I've read two books in this series already and they were both excellent. Covered all of the questions on the exam, and the sample questions in the book were great. There is a silly game on the CD which isn't worth installing, but the sample test on the CD I found better than Transcender.

Summary: Very good but not complete...
Review: I found this book to be very helpful. It provided everything that was mainstream about the test but upon doing the test I noticed that Microsoft had put in some really obscure questions. My suggestion is, supplement what you read in this book with at least one other source. Especially if this is your first exam!

Summary: Decent book for the money, but there are better books.
Review: I got this book at the library (borrowed) and the MCSE Core Exams in a Nutshell (purchased on Amazon) to help prepare for the Networking Essentials exam.

MCSE Networking Essentials for Dummies is a easy book to read and helps you get a general understanding of the knowledge. It's not very well-written, however. The author goes from technical to general knowledge without transitions for the reader.

The author himself admits that there are better technical books out there.

I do recommend this book for a person on a budget who doesn't want a 500 pound, $40+ book or as a library book.

Summary: Not bad, but not great, either...
Review: I have several years experience on NT system administration, but I know lots of guys who don't pass the Microsoft exams by experience. So I did the prudent thing: I bought the Dummies book and also bought the O'Reilly "MCSE: The Core Exams in a Nutshell" book. The O-Reilly book is a no-nonsense book meant for experienced people and fills in the gaps left by the Dummies book. Between the two books and a rash of practice tests available for free online, I passed the test with a 866. Could have been better, but I'm glad to have passed. The CD that came with the book had terrible exam questions! Ignore the CD. But the book is good if you want to learn. What matters is if you have experience or not. If not, get the Dummies and the Sybex MCSE books. If you think you're experienced, follow my path. If you think you're a wizard, go take the test without studying and then come back humbled.... Buy the book, it will help you!

Summary: For Dummies, By Dummies
Review: I have to admit when I bought this book I was just ready to complete my MCSE (This would be my 4th test.) Plain and simple, the book lacks good solid material. Don't take this test if this is the only book you read. I passed the test and have completed my MCSE-- but I went back and read the McGraw-Hill book prior to taking Networking Essentials. Don't be a dummy and buy this book.

Summary: Good starting point
Review: I have used the Dummies books for a few exams and I have always found them to be a good starting point. The information is presented in an easy to follow manner and uses lots of tables to organize information that needs straight memorization. The game included on the CD is a nice bonus.

While I would not wish for this to be my only resource for taking the test, I generally use it as my first one to get an overrall picture.

Summary: Definately not the end all be all
Review: I read only this book and took only this test (on the CD) I was getting 950's on the CD. I took the actual test and failed with 680. Pooey.

Summary: Good intro to the microsoft guide.
Review: I read this book before purchasing the Offical Microsoft study guide and it definately helped. The MS guide covers the topic in much more depth but I don't think it would have made much sense without reading this one first. I passed the exam without any problem between these two books.
