Summary: You can read this over the weekend
Review: Draves is right, of course, we NEED to know about online learning. This book is a great start. You can read it this weekend and be up and running on Monday. Draves' hands-on sensibility is useful for those of us that believe we need to stay up on the leading edge of learning. Read this book. Take an online course. Develop one. The 90's are not here, they're gone, for heaven's sake, and Draves is right--this is the wave.

Summary: "Teaching Online" Hits the Mark!
Review: I enjoyed reading "Teaching Online" by William Draves and encourage anyone in the lifelong learning field or with an interest in this fascinating topic, to consider reading it as well. Mr. Draves has approached this timely topic in a functional, no-nonsense way. His book is pleasantly void of jargon and annoying filler - he gets down to the issue at hand and approaches it in a refreshing manner.

If you are interested in seeing where and how the world is going to learn in the new Millennium, read "Teaching Online" and get a jump on the competition.

Summary: A very good beginner's guide
Review: I found this to be a good introduction to new developers of online instruction. It provides a good overview of the changing landscape with predictions I happen to agree with.

I was disappointed with the minimal coverage of some areas. Take, for instance interactivity. Left out of this section was any coverage of the use of JavaScript and tools such as Flash. I have found that it takes about ten - twelve hours to teach faculty enough JavaScript to allow them to include significant interactivity via pop-up windows and one or two question quizzes.

Overall, I was pleased with the book and consider it a definitie must have for the person new to this environment.

Summary: Easy Read
Review: I read this book in an afternoon and that's about all I could have stomached anyway. The writing is poor and amateurish. The claims the author makes are not supported by data or argument, although he does refer to a few "experts," for whatever that's worth. It seems like he's trying to promote the company he works for (or owns) rather than give an honest assessment of distance education.

Summary: A Cheerleader with Practical Suggestions.
Review: In his new book, Bill Draves establishes the foundation for educators and students to understand the philosophical and technological basis of online education. In so doing, his book is not just another "how to" book but a work that helps the reader understand the significance of online education and its likely impact on all of society. It is a "must read".

Summary: A reader from Minneapolis, MN
Review: Mr. Draves has done a great job combining his background with the online world and predicting the future. The book doesn't only tell us where we are but by looking at the past examples in human history, it tells us where we are heading in "life-long learning". Good examples are used through out the book. Easy reading for non-technical people who are interested to see the future of online teaching and learning.

Summary: Timely!
Review: This book covers what educators need to know now -- whether they are exploring possibilities of teaching online, or are already actively engaged in this important medium. A great book!
