Rating: Summary: An inspirational book filled with delicious recipes! Review: I had the enviable opportunity of dining at Juliano's restaurant in San Francisco this past summer. Being new to raw foods, I was not sure what to expect. The food was absolutely delicious, out-of-this-world, and beautifully presented. The textures and flavors were amazing. The experience inspired me to learn more about raw foods and to put _Raw: The Uncook Book_ at the top of my Christmas list. Luckily, I did get this as a present, and I made one of the recipes this evening. It turned out great! My sense of the recipes is that many are somewhat complicated in that they cross-reference other recipes, but that you can take short-cuts to "ease into" this cuisine if you don't have time to do everything. Ultimately I believe Juliano's claim in the introduction that with a little practice, raw food preparation takes less time than cooked food prep. Finally, the majority of ingredients are not that exotic and easily obtainable in most regions. The book is filled with humor and beautiful color photographs. I highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: Heaven is a place on earth! Review: I never imagined ethical eating could be combined with such inspiring presentation, stylish layout of recipies and a kookie/fruity character like Juliano at the helm; dropped right into the mainstream for all to see. This book is truly one of a kind, as is its author. As a vegan, I was drawn to 'raw cuisine' because it really is the natural extension of the health and nutritional angle of vegetarianism. Any vegetarian/vegan who struggles through life trying to maintain their eating ethics must long for options like those featured in this book. Flipping through the book will produce waves of arousal as you are confronted with Juliano's gorgeous arrangements of raw ingredients. My only problem is this the daunting task of preparing most any dish in the book. Most recipies require you to reference other recipies, often doubling the number of ingredients and prep time. The abundance of 'sprouted' ingredients in each recipies seemingly makes it necessary to begin sprouting days ahead of your meal. Many of the vegetables are so obscure that you'd have to live in a posh environment like whichever part of Cali Juliano hails from to find the right stuff. But, given those complaints, I'll bet it's all well worth it. I'll bet you really do feel better for eating raw foods. I'll even bet the recipies turn out as delicious as Juliano contends. But I doubt I'll have the time and money to get one of his more elaborate creations together on my own. If only there were one of his restaurants in my city. That way I could taste the end result before embarking on the incredible journey that is required to make these meals a reality in one's own home. Obviously, I am jealous of Juliano's ability to pull off this culinary lifestyle. Any steps that I, or anyone else who reads this book, can make toward Juliano's vision is worth the effort. Happy reading and eating.
Rating: Summary: Not fast food Review: Although there is no cooking involved, there are not many recipes that are quick. Most are quite involved with a lot of veggies and fruits, herbs and spices needed. Several with many hours of dehydration and a lot of pre-prep. work. On the positive side, the recipes are well written and many sound and look delicious. I will be trying several.
Rating: Summary: Raw and loving it Review: GO BELIEVE THE HYPE! Juliano's book is beautiful, bountiful, and full of life, and you will be too after trying his creative and satisfying recipes.
Rating: Summary: A beautiful book with great information! Review: This truly is the most beautiful "cookbook" I have ever come across. I am new to raw foods and I especially liked Juliano's gentle approach. He seems to have such a love for preparing food that his excitment rubs off on the reader. The recipes are easy to follow and easy to adapt, if need be. The book is loaded with information and hints on everything from stocking the kitchen to how to sprout beans. In the week that I have had the book, I have already prepared several recipes and tonight got up the courage to prepare his "Pasta Marinara" with the most amazing sauce! I only needed a knife, a vegetable peeler, and a blender to prepare this gourmet meal. Quite a treat for a busy stay-home mother of toddler twins! I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to enjoy truly good food.
Rating: Summary: The Best Raw Recipe Book Ever!! Review: For a 100% raw-food eater such as myself, this book is a gourmet godsend. It's also a great introduction to raw/living foods for people who want to be able to eat healthy but still feel decadent. You could eat most of the luscious desserts in the book three meals a day and be eating healthier than 99% of the people on the planet! It's much more imaginative than any other raw recipe book I've read (and I've read most), and with it's big color pictures, it's sure to delight. FIVE BIG PHAT STARS!!
Rating: Summary: I love the restaurant and so couln't resist the book... Review: I practically never cook but I will 'uncook' quite a lot now that I have RAW. I visit San Francisco every 3.7 months and eat raw at Juliano's restaurant every chance I get. This is by far the best food I have ever had (vegetarian or otherwise). This is the one recipe book that won't just sit on the shelf!
Rating: Summary: Response to "Meat Loaf" Review Review: The person who wrote about the "Meat loaf" recipe must not have read the recipe: it calls for a total of only 1/2 cup olive oil. There are also a lot of nuts in it but 1. nuts are healthy and 2. you're not supposed to eat the meat loaf everyday! There are plenty of light recipes here as well. It's like taking ANY cookbook and pointing to the dessert section and saying "Ah ha! look at all this fatty food! What a bad cookbook." Give me a break. I like this cookbook. It's gorgoeus, inspiring and the recipes are good.
Rating: Summary: FANTASTIC! Review: This book is fantastic! I've only had it about a month but have tried about a quarter of the recipes in the book and haven't found a single one yet that isn't fabulous! I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone, it will make a believer of faw foods out of anyone! I could hardly put this book down. [...]
This book is very simple to cook and still very delicious. I like the fact that this book focus on vital vegan food. I recomand this book to everyone who is into healthy living.
Rating: Summary: Juliano's personal photo album Review: First of all, how full of himself can he be! too many glossies of juliano looking fabulous- anyway
The book is too expensive and the recipes are too limited.
He uses avocado on everything and not enough of other well known raw foods.
He named his recipes after the thing they most relemble in normal cooking- which sucks because there is no such thing as VEGAN/raw meat loaf, cheese, burgers, or sushi. sorry juliano
Nice try juliano- I think you are better off sticking to modeling
P.S. it is true that most of the ingredients for his recipes are hard to find- even at farmers markets and health food stores, if we can call them that
