Rating: Summary: Good for the Indian food loving novice Review: I like this book because the instructions are clear and it contains variations on my favorite Indian foods. I found an Indian store, bought all the spices and am ready to go when I want a healthful, fairly easy to prepare chicken dish or Indian flavored meal.
Rating: Summary: I enjoy making the recipes from this book. Review: I received Quick and Easy Indian Cooking recently as a gift. At first I was disappointed by the "Quick and Easy" approach because I'd already mastered some Indian recipes and I was looking for some new challenges. After having made some of the dishes, I have changed my mind. These recipes may be quick and easy, but they are also the best tasting Indian recipes I have made! Madhur Jaffrey's instructions are simple to follow. She also has a section on spices and techniques from which I learned. I'm looking forward to my next opportunity to try something new from the book.
Rating: Summary: Overall, I liked the simplistic recipes. Review: I was dissappointed that the very first recipe I tried was missing an ingredient; Onion Fritters (page 20), the instructions say to add the water but it is not listed on the ingredients list so the amount is left to guesswork, which I promptly guessed wrong and ended up with a much soupier mixture, to which I had to add more gram flour to get it to the consistancy needed. Could someone query the author for the right amount of water? I only hope that this is the only recipe with an error in it.
Rating: Summary: food OK, recipes aren't as fast as you'd think Review: I'm an average cook (not great, not bad) and found these recipes disappointing. Granted, they're flavored OK and I suppose I shouldn't expect them to be as good as the food I get when I order take-out from Indian restaurants. But the recipes I've tried have been disappointing, taking much longer than 30-45 minutes, and usually ending up with mediocre texture. Not to mention they make LOTS of food, so I've ended up with overflowing pans of meat that we're not crazy over. I would return the book, but Amazon would deduct shipping costs, so maybe I'll hold on to it longer. I have other recipe books around that I haven't touched in years either.
Rating: Summary: Great introduction to Indian cuisine Review: I'm an Indian who learned to cook Indian food not from her mum but from Madhur Jaffrey's books. I have quite a few of her books including this one and I have to say her recipes are authentic, easy and completely idiot-proof. I love her notes and tips on which recipes complement each other. My only complaint about Indian recipe books is that they don't explain the regional differences clearly enough so that people stop thinking that Indian food is all about chicken tikka, saag paneer and lamb vindaloo! Try the recipes in these books, make adjustments for your palate and spice levels and you'll be thrilled with the results!
Rating: Summary: Best Indian Cookbook period. Review: I've been eating Indian food for over 30 years and cooking it for over 20. I can't believe the few negative comments about this book. You do NOT need a pressure cooker. You will very soon be making food better than any Indian Restaurant in the US. I have made about 15 of the recipes without a single dud and four of them are now absolute regulars at our house. It is FAR better than all the other books with fancier photos or millions of recipes.
Rating: Summary: A big hit in our house. Review: Intensely flavored sauces. Inexpensive cuts of meat infused with exotic spices and falling-apart tender. All in less than half an hour! If you like Indian food, and you have or are willing to get a pressure cooker, this book is a must-have.
There's a great variety of recipes. The amount of prep time varies from incredibly quick and easy meals for busy weekday nights, to more complicated dishes for leisurely weekend dinners, to a few fancy recipes for special occasions. There are mild (but not bland!) dishes and spicy dishes, with suggestions for adjusted the heat level. There are recipes for beef, lamb, pork, poultry and seafood, and many are good with several different types of meat. There are also a small number of vegetarian selections. Not all recipes call for a pressure cooker, and those that do also include conventional directions (though the cooking time is significantly longer.)
We eat a meal from this book every single week, and it's always the meal I look forward to most, both as a cook and a diner!
Rating: Summary: AMAZINGLY easy and DELICIOUS! Review: Jaffrey is a worldwide expert on Indian and Asian cuisine -- but many experts have trouble creating genuinely easy and quick recipes for beginners. Not so with Ms. Jaffrey -- this book rocks! Almost every recipe I have made -- and I have sampled quite a few -- has turned out wonderfully on the first try, despite my substituting an ingredient here and there. BUY this book and cook Indian like you never thought you would -- in under an hour. (Most truly take half an hour or less, in fact.)
Rating: Summary: very very taste Review: Madhur Jaffrey's terrific little book makes good on all three representations in the title: preparation is quick and easy and the results are definitely Indian. This is not watered down Indian; the spice combinations are subtle and full-flavored. The recipes are written for readers accustomed to American cookbooks; i.e., the measurements are accurate and time directions are specific.
I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoy my new beverage of choice. Made from 100% organic soy, taste just like coffee and no caffeine. Finally, I got rid of that wired up feeling all day and feeling great. Look for it on the net by googling "s o yfee".
Rating: Summary: Great Food! Review: Ms. Jaffrey's cookbook is beautiful, the recipes are easy, and the food tastes delicious. I have been looking for an Indian cookbook that has attainable ingredients and reasonable cooking times, and this is it! I cooked beef saag the day after the book arrived in the mail. The smell of the spices made my house smell wonderful, and the taste was authentic. Congratulations to Ms. Jaffrey - this book is a gem! This book would also make a nice gift. Even though it is paperback the cover is folded over for a very nice look, the paper is thick, and the photography is lovely.
