Rating: Summary: Delicious All-Around Review: My girlfriend gave me this for my birthday three months ago. Little did she know that in three months I'd make every recipe in the book and have many of them ready for her when she came home from work. It was a good gift all around. You make these recipes and you feel like you're eating in an expensive indian restaurant. So delicious...I'm especially a fan of all the recipes that use coconut milk. These fine dishes have introduced me to cooking and even indian grocery stores in a way that I never thought possible. I never even used to make spaghetti by myself, now I'm preparing 4 course meals for my friends. Seriously a life changing book. Buy it!!!!
Rating: Summary: my favorite cookbook Review: Not only do I use this cookbook several times a week, I often give it as a gift. I even bought a pressure cooker to speed up recipes. Now, almost every meal has at least one Indian dish, and the kids, who prefer macaroni and cheese, often say "Indian food, again?"
Rating: Summary: Almost 100% successful recipes Review: Overall, this is a fabulous cookbook, and we've made most of the recipes with great success. The person who reviewed it above complaining about the onion fritter recipe is correct - that's one of two confusing recipes in the book. (Add 1/2 cup water for the onion fritters, normal flour works fine, and if you're using a deep fat fryer, try 380 degrees. Once you do these things, the onion fritters are great.) The other dangerous recipe is the fish fillets in a curry sauce, which is hard because it doesn't scale well and the heat is highly dependent on your curry powder. Otherwise, though, the recipes are stunningly good, and generally easy after the work of cutting everything up and measuring spices. Even ingredients I don't like normally, like spinach and cabbage are wonderful when cooked in Indian food. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Contents Under Pressure Review: Someone should have warned me that you need a pressure cooker to make most of the recipes in this cookbook. So I'm writing this to warn other potential buyers. Unless you have one, don't bother buying this book. OTOH, if you do, I am selling mine and it's in perfect condition.
Rating: Summary: Great for a beginner. Review: This book is a great introduction to Indian cooking. First of all, I wanted to address a previous review. Someone posted that they hated this book. They blatantly stated that they didn't even try the recipes. Don't be swayed by their review this book is great. Think of this book as a shorthand guide to Indian cooking. I married an Indian, and I wanted to cook him Indian food but did not have the slightest idea on the style and attitude towards Indian cooking. I was mostly concerned with it's authentic taste. This was the first book I used to teach myself Indian cooking. You will find curries, kebabs, pooris, chutneys, or anything else relevant to an Indian dinner. She carefully describes how to find scarce items with a wonderful glossary in back. She will teach you what is imperative to have and what combinations make the meal seamless. The tastes are definitely pleasing. What's even more pleasing? To hear my husband tell his brother and his friends that, "We are eating saag gosht with pooris tonite," and to hear them reply with, "You are so lucky." As many of his Indian friends are bachelors busy with the school books, they miss the taste of India made at home. So what have we learned today, boys and girls? 1)This book is for beginners, however, very authentic. 2) You can't go wrong with Madhur Jaffrey. 3)Ignore the person who wrote that bad review. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: A GREAT START Review: This book is a great way to introduce yourself to Indian cooking. I've tried 12 recipes. Two did not work out, but the 10 that did were all excellent.
Rating: Summary: Rave! Rave! Review: This cookbook changed my life. It introduced me to a new world of spices, and inspired me to buy a pressure cooker. DON'T let the fact that some of the recipes use a pressure cooker scare you off -- alternate times for nomal stove top cooking given are supplied for each. But! Once I broke down and bought a pressure cooker, I found I didn't have to wait for the weekend to cook these delicious stews. Fabulous recipes: - Smothered Lamb (yum!) - Hard Boiled Eggs Masala - Ground Lamb with Peas - Chicken with Spinach and Cilantro One off-note: Beef with Spinach. What was with that? I think there must have been a printing error w/ the amount of water... But! One bad recipe in the 17 entrees I've tried is a pretty good success rate.
Rating: Summary: WOW! Now there's no better restaurant than my own kitchen! Review: This cookbook is awesome. I was able to find the ingredients with ease. The recipes are easy to follow and the results are stupendous! The hardest part is not RAVING over your own cooking in front of guests. I recently fixed the Chicken with Chiles and Onions for company and kept finding myself wanting to say, "Wow. This is SO GOOD! This is better than in any restaurant!" Fortunately, the guests said it for me so I was able to hold my tongue. You won't be disappointed!
Rating: Summary: A must have if you like Indian food Review: This is my favorite Indian cookbook. The recipes are quick and relatively easy once you stock up on the basic ingredients like garam masala and the other spices. I've made several recipes and they turn out delicious every time. Great for entertaining too. My non-Indian husband and I (of Indian origin) both find the recipes easy to make and very tasty. Some of our favorites: spicy grilled chicken, silken chicken, peas in light tomato cream sauce, royal chicken, and one of the lamb (or beef) curries made in a pressure cooker.
Rating: Summary: A major disappointment Review: This is the first time I have been compelled to submit a review or return a cookbook to Amazon.com demanding full refund. I bought it because of the great reviews. Beware. I feel misled. I must have a hundred cookbooks and pride myself on the variety and styles of cooking in my cookbook library. I did not even want this book on my shelf and had no interest in trying any of the recipes. This is the first time I felt I made a poor choice by reading others reviews. Just beware on this one. I want a good basic introduction to Indian cookery, but believe me, this is not it. The recipes may be great, but if one isn't inspired to try them, the book is a dust collector. I was only inspired to return the book for refund.
