Summary: Take It Off, Take It All Off...
Review: Carpender is not a physician, just a person with a weight problem, a solution to it, and scads of practical advice. Unlike the various M.D.'s who've written low-carb diet books, Carpender has no axes to grind, no "my diet is better than their diet" crankiness. She reviews the leading low-carb diets and opines on each, basing her conclusions on her and her friends' experiences. Evenhanded and clear, Carpender offers a synopsis of each diet so the reader can try them all and select the one that proves most beneficial. I felt like I was reading the unbiased, untendentious prose of a charming person who would get me closer to the truth of low carb dieting--and get me fitting back into those bespoke suits a client made for me thirty-five pounds ago. So far, Carpender's advice has been right on the money. Buy the other low carb books if you like, but be sure to buy this one first. It's fun to read and the information can make you healthy, fit, and slender.

Summary: Five Stars Are Not Enough!
Review: This book is by far the best of all the lowcarb books I've read! It's written in comfortable, everyday language that actually made it FUN to read--I couldn't put it down! Dana Carpender doesn't preach or lecture; she provides a wealth of nutrition, science and medical information but she manages to do it with heart and with a sense of humor--something that's definitely missing from the other lowcarb books I've read. And this book is interactive! There are no questionnaires or forms to fill out but at times you'll actually feel like you're having a conversation with the author, rather than reading a book.

By all means, I recommend this book highly. Five stars are not enough!

Summary: Look elsewhere
Review: This book earned the dubious distinction of being the only one I ever returned to Amazon. As a nutrition writer, I was disturbed by some of the errors contained in this book. While written in a chatty, readable style, many health and nutrition claims are unsupported and some information is erroneous. For example, the author recommends a single supplement of 25,000 IU's of vitamin A, an amount five times the RDA for a fat-soluble vitamin which has toxic effects at high doses. I am a strong proponent of low-carb eating, but you can find more accurate information and advice in The Atkins Diet or The Formula (which contains a more moderate, lower fat approach -- highly recommended.)

Summary: How I gave up Low Fat and Lost Forty Pounds!
Review: What a crock! You could probably lose weight on this diet but at what cost? The food becomes boring and repetitive and I for one was ALWAYS hungry! Also, my cholesterol went up 50 POINTS! No more low carb garbage for me. Plus, I am offended by all the low carb cave men nonsense! I happen to believe we were created by God. He gave us fruits, vegetables, grains and meat to eat. Not so the low carbers. They insist we came from cave men and they ate only meat! What a bunch of baloney! Plus, in the long run it just doesn't work. Goodbye low carb, hello permanent weight loss.

Summary: This book has personality!
Review: For a reader who wants the simple plan of low carb, this is the book for you. I like the author's style tremendously. She includes humor along with great information to get and keep you lean. She also makes the point that exercise is not necessarily the key, low carbs are. Her story proves it. I have a personally signed book from Dana and can attest to her reliability as a good source of low carb info.

Summary: Lori King loves this book!
Review: Wonderful book! Easy read, entertaining, informative, and it works! I have purchased hundreds of books from Amazon and this is the first book I've reviewed. I really recommend it to those who find that low-fat, high-carb eating is no longer a viable weight loss alternative for them. This is usually everyone about 35 years of age or older, unless they're into heavy body-building.It may also be good for younger adults too. I just know that I got so discouraged that I gave up on diets and exercise. I saw results right away with a low-carb plan that I tailored to my way of life. There is enough flexability that I feel like I'm in control of the process, which is important for me.The extra energy, health benefits, and regained clarity of mind are the additional benefits that make me want to continue low-carb even if I didn't lose an ounce. I'm also not always hungry anymore. Great job Dana! I'm waiting for your next book, "Low Carb for Life." Please hurry...

Summary: Most Balanced Book I've Found On the Subject
Review: I have read several books on dieting and nutrition from those on 'far right' written by a physician to the 'far left' out in 'New Age-land'. Dana's book is by far the most balanced, informative, no-nonsense, best written book I've found. As a life-time 'fat person' she knows the subject. As a former health food store owner, she knows that industry and that 'end of the spectrum'. AND she has done much reading of medical-based research articles. She clearly and with humor explains EVERYTHING and lays out all the different low carb diet options. I chose the one best suited for me and have already lost half the weight I'm targeting (8 of 16 pounds). After two years of portion control and hunger, I'm losing and am NOT hungry. If you want only to buy one book, this is it!

Summary: This Really Works!!!
Review: Our daughter loves this diet and encouraged my husband and I to try it. We started on June 1, 2001, and by the middle of September we had lost a combined total of 100 pounds. Since then, we have shared this book and diet with many friends and all have had success. With the maintenance plan, we have kept the weight off and plan to stay on this eating plan forever. I also have to share this; before the diet, I was on Lipitor and blood pressure medication. Since being on this plan, my cholesterol and blood pressure have dropped so I no longer need any medication. WOW!!

Summary: Well Worth the Read
Review: I had read many of the books she talks about here, but this helped a great deal by comparing the low carb plans that are in vogue now. If you know you have the carb intolerance problem, I think this book will give you a good feel for the different programs. She has a lot of medical information which is not well doucumented although there is a bibliography in the back. I felt there was a severe lack of footnotes. I will recommend this book to my low carb friends.

Summary: The best diet book ever!
Review: This book is a wealth of information describing the different types of low carb dieting. With this book you can choose your own dieting program and learn some great tips about what or what not to eat. This book was a joy to read and will make you laugh! A must for a low carber.
