Summary: A disappointment
Review: After all the glowing reviews, I decided to get this book, and I am disappointed with it. There are no new ideas here (nothing I haven't seen for years in my favorite magazines and other decorating books). (A cake stand as a soap dish? Gee, I think I got that idea out of Better Homes and Gardens or House Beautiful, like, ten years ago!) The settings look fussy, busy, cluttery, and old ladyish. My mother might like this book but then again she might not. Nothing new and kind of a throwback to where decorating was several years ago. I suppose the book is really intended as a kind of catalog in disguise, since it was done by a store owner,so maybe I just expected too much.

Summary: show me something new!!
Review: Can anyone get published doing something very adequate?
Absolutely NO NEW IDEAS in this book. It has a JCPenney catalog look to it. Every single piece of furniture and accessories look new and bought from some inexpensive store. Nothing offbeat, personal or innovative about it. Flip through at the bookstore, but do not waste your money. (And her second book is exactly the same!)

Summary: Eeeeeeeeeeeeeooooooooooooooooooooo.
Review: I cannot imagine why a friend gave me this book. Maybe she meant it for my grandmother. This book is scary. It is so dated with rooms crammed with stuff. The same boring, old-fashioned mood runs through it.

Summary: Absolutely splendid
Review: I found this book simply marvelous. Most of my decorator friends crib shamelessly from this book. Reading the book, it's easy to see why--it's full of warm, inventive ways to make your house or apartment look great.
Mary Carol's no-frills approach is suitable in any situation, no matter how sophisticated or classy you are.

Summary: Wonderful!!
Review: I had the pleasure to meet Ms Garrity about three years ago in her wonderful shop. This book is a statement of comfort and beauty as is the shop that inspired it. The rooms portrayed are wonderfully cluttered with collected treasures and beautifull heirlooms. The basic style is "traditional", however Ms Garrity seems to be able to deviate from the normal rules of tradition. She links polished silver trays with rusty urns and garden tools. She allows whimsical touches among her beautiful artwork. It seems that while Ms Garrity has an appreciation for beauty she does away with the snobbery of some of her counterparts creating an overall look that is beautifull without being inaccessable.

Summary: A really useful decorating book
Review: I have bought dozens of decorating and home design books but this is the most useful one I have ever purchased. The author gives you doable tips on everything from creating beautiful tableaus on end tables to grouping and hanging pictures. The text of the book is engaging and conversational. The photographs are just spectacular. This book would make a wonderful hostess gift for anyone who enjoys nesting and decorating her home

Summary: My new decorating bible!!
Review: In preparation for our move into a larger pre-war New York apartment, I have pored through countless decorating books, only to walk away feeling as if I hadn't learned anything I didn't know already. This book, however, is completely different. Every page is full of amazing and completely do-able ideas. The rooms are decorated exactly the way I would have done, had I the imagination and creativity that Nell Hill obviously possesses in such abundance. I fully admit that I plan on adopting many of the decorating ideas in this book into my new home, and most importantly, I finally feel inspired! This is a fantastic book for anyone who loves traditional furnishings and has a desire to surround themselves with beauty every day. And as a final note: In response to those who deemed the book to "old" or not sufficiently urbane- I'm 30 and live in Manhattan, and I, for one, adore this book!

Summary: A beautiful book with great how-to's
Review: Nell Hill's in Atchison, Kansas is a great store.

But Mary Carol Garrity's book goes a step further and - with beautiful photographs and descriptive text - tells you exactly how you can take the things you already own and love and create a fabulous style.

This is pretty enough for a coffee table book and practical enough to pull out and use. There are no unattainable "Martha Stewart"-like crafts or projects.

Nell Hill's Style at Home is a great self-purchase or gift.
