Rating: Summary: Chic, Charming, Charismatic Review: Nell Hill's Style at Home is just as chic, charming, and charismatic as Mary Carol Garrity. Those who have visited her two shops will not be disappointed in this book. It is chock full of beautiful photographs and practical decorating tips which epitomize Nell Hill's and G. Diebolts. I especially enjoyed visiting Mary Carol's home, via her photos. Her decorating style is similar to Charlotte Moss, with lots of charm, color, layering, sophistication, and personality. Wonderful book!!!
Rating: Summary: Rats.... Review: Some of the reviews sounded so good that I got this book. I was a little disappointed with the book because it seems to me that I've seen all of these ideas before. And I have seen them again and again. What the book shows has a dated look to it. A little too traditional and provincial for me. Maybe that's because I live in a city where I see more new ideas all the time or maybe what is shown, while not bad, is just aimed at a different and older reader.(Maybe amazon should print its reviewers' ages!)
Rating: Summary: Do these bad reviewers have a vendetta? Review: Style is personal, I understand that. I recently purchased a copy of Style at Home while visiting Atchison, KS. I was not expecting a store like Nell Hill's in a town of 10,000. It is true that the book does not give the full picture, but it does give some interesting ways to look at the way a home and its furnishings are setup. The book urges the reader to use things in new and interesting ways while not throwing out the history and the style of the things you have. It does not surprise me that some designers may not like this book, it puts some great tools in the hands of the people who would probably be paying them. If you ever get a chance, beat a path to Nell Hill's and check out the hospitality that is evident in the pictures that are displayed in this lovely book. And by the way, I am not old, I am 25! Mary Carol, keep up the good work!
Rating: Summary: No sense of style here Review: There is no sense of style here. It is very predictable and low-brow. Nothing interesting or unique. I am guessing that anyone who likes this book is either very old or hopelessly lacking in any personal style sense. how sad
Rating: Summary: Helpful, Fun, Easy. Review: This book is full of interesting and exciting ideas; i found that even i was capable of pulling off a lot of the things in there. I would really recommend this book to anyone who is interested in decorating their home without spending a fortune, and without relying on all the fussy and tyrannical "laws" about home decorating.
Rating: Summary: A bit dated and staid Review: This book is pretty but I've been-there-done-that. I had hoped for some new ideas for my home (a fresh take on romance and tradition, which I love), but I did not find them here. The settings don't feel real to me. I want a home, not a stage set, and I need ideas for LIVED-IN style for my family and visiting nieces and nephews versus this kind of fussy, "precious" stuff. The style here is almost the worst of "grandma's house," and I can almost feel and smell the dust. Yuk.
Rating: Summary: Stylish personalization for your home! Review: This is a marvelous design book - it captures the beauty and style of Mary Carol's terrific store - Nell Hill's. I was lucky enough to be one of the hundreds that Mary Carol let tour her gorgeous house - where many of the pictures from the book are shot. It is exactly like her store - imagination, creativity, and personalized style abound! What I love about Mary Carol's design style is that she doesn't have just one - it is whatever works - wherever. Her house looked like somebody actually LIVED there - and had a great time with friends and family. Mary Carol gives you the tips of her trade - ones that are practical and reasonable. Visit her shop and buy this beautiful book - you will be very happy to try some of these easy and fun ideas for yourself.
Rating: Summary: Very old looking Review: Unfortunately, I received this book for a holiday gift. As a designer myself, I was surprised that this book was published so recently, because it looks old and dated. Fussy rooms crammed with too many cutesy touches is not something I even want to share with my design clients, so I did not keep this on the bookshelf in my office.
Rating: Summary: An awe inspiring book! Review: Well, I AM older!! Mary's book is now the NUMBER ONE book in my decorating library! I have amassed quite a collection of books on the subject of decorting, but not a one is as inspiring as this one. I follow Mary's belief of 'there are no rules when decorating, just things you love'. Her rooms are 'not just another pretty face', but rooms you can live in, while also enjoying the 'scenery'.
