Rating: Summary: Brilliant and down to earth Review: On one hand I feel like it is a violation of his privacy.....on the other I fell like it is something he would have wanted, to tear down some of the myth......He is a truly remarkable person but not a demi-god like people believe.....that is what makes hims so great, wanting to change the world with a guitar.....this collection has really changed me in some ways and the way I view the world.......who really cares if Courtney gets the proceeds? Wouldn't you buy John Lennon's journals even if Yoko Ono got the money......It is a worthwhile buy and a really intimate look at someone truly normal and brilliant all at once......
Rating: Summary: Haunting, Fascinating, Sad... Review: The list goes on, but this is just a book you simply CAN'T put down. It is terrific insight into one of the most talented songwriter's of his generation, as well as to what goes through the mind of an addict. (Those who never dealt with addiction have a difficult time understanding the nature of addiction. Cobain at least gives disturbingly real insight into the mind of an addict) I also thought it was incredibly sad just how isolated this man was, despite his fame and surroundings.I felt Cobain came off as a much more gentle soul than my original perceptions of him had ever allowed me to consider. I felt almost like he forsaw his life spin out of control and was just overwhelmed by the thought of stopping it. I was thoroughly fascinated. Write him off as just another grunge-rocker junkie if you want, but if you want a fascinating portrait into a talent that hadn't even scratched the surface before it could reach it's potential, snap this up!
Rating: Summary: A Hollow Book Review: What a serious letdown this book is. As a big Cobain fan, I couldn't wait for this book to come out, but was bummed with the rip-off content. The word "journal" creates an image of pages scribbled with inner thoughts and hidden emotions, but this is more a scrapbook of doodles with few glimpses into what Kurt was thinking. Yeah, it's neat to see his handwritten lyrics to songs, but is that his "journal"? It would have worked a lot better as a scrapbook with pictures, more of a celebration of Cobain, rather than scanned pages from a few doodle pad. If you're looking for a heavy look into Cobain's head, HEAVIER THAN HEAVEN is a much better purchase. And, naturally, like everyone interested in this book, the nagging question is how could a wife sell out her husband's journals? That stinky question hangs off this book like a dead rat with its tail caught between the pages. Unfortunately, that's most interesting thing about this book.
Rating: Summary: the unbearable weight of being Review: i love kurt cobain, and have, in a strictly distanced and reverent way, since i first heard heart-shaped box 6 years ago. i was overwhelmed by the inner conflict of needing to understand him and knowing what a violent intrusion reading this book would be. i was shocked, and in many ways hurt anew, by his humor, talent and humanity. but mostly his pain. no, scratch that, his anguish. read it if you feel you need to. but beware of the consequent nausea that will surface at some later point. the hollow feeling that somebody truly prolific was lost.
Rating: Summary: an honest man, bringing reality to the forefront Review: Wow after reading this the thing I respect most about Kurt is his blunt honesty and innocence. These are qualities that are difficult to find not only in everyday people, but especially musicians. Even if your not a nirvana fan the book is interesting. Kurt was quite an introspective individual and he brings some interesting philosophical perspectives to the forefront on the human condition. Sarcastic, humurous, and beautfiul. The only thing not to like about it is that 75% of his writings were not included here. They were held back by his family due to there personal nature. I just wish more famous rockers and celebrity genuses journals could be read in this format. Everybody known or unknown should keep a journal like this to celebrate there life.
Rating: Summary: Very Interesting Review: I was impressed to see over 300 pages of information in this new book. It shows drawings and thoughts straight out of Cobain's mind. What an inspirational addition this could make to your library. I recently also read a book called Dreams: Gateway to the True Self which was amazing. I recommend both of them highly.
Rating: Summary: A great book! Review: The Cobain Journals are done with such care and quality as to offer those of us who are interested in the mind of Kurt Cobain a unique window into it. To see his actual writing and artwork reproduced in full color is incredible. While I have waivered about the issues of privacy invasion, the nature of his writing seems to be with an audience in mind. I feel lucky to be part of the audience. Everyone seems to have an opinion about Kurt. Writers drone on him. A blessing to have Kurt given the chance to offer his own views!
Rating: Summary: Dream Come True Review: Nirvana Journals is a great book that I have been waiting for for a long time. It is a dream come true. I love Nirvana and this book is the best book in the world. It shows the pages in which Kurt put together his famous songs, and shows some of the lines that Kurt could of put in the song but decided not to. Nirvana Journals is definately a must buy.
Rating: Summary: saddening Review: The journal, of grunge hero kurt cobain is a depressing and intimate look into the life of a hero to many disenchanted gen xers. It contains many of Kurt's drawings, lyrics, stories, feelings, ideas etc. The pages are colored photocopies of the actual journal. I haven't finished it yet, but it is very interesting and personal - I feel sort of bad for reading it, but I do love kurt. Its a little pricey, the people that would probably be the most impacted by it, probably couldn't afford it. It's worth every cent though. love oblio
Rating: Summary: Buy this. Review: If you are a Nirvana fan, and you love Nirvana music, and you are intrigued about the life or thoughts of Kurt Cobain, you must have this book. It is incredible to see the hand-written words to a lot of his early songs as well as the early titles. It was worth the money I paid for it and then some.
