Rating: Summary: Excellent way to get started Review: This book claims to be hands on and teach you to build movies with little effort. This is very true. It is more like a workbook than just a reference or regular manual. Every step of the way is guided with pictures and explanations. It is more than just step-by-step excerises. It explains why you do what you do for each step. This book gives an excellent introduction to Flash MX. I read some bad reviews of this book by people who obviously had misperceptions of the book. It is meant for the novice. It is not an intermediate or advanced book. Those bad reviews I read were by people looking for something more. This book fulfills all that it promises. I have tried and failed many times to teach myself Flash, until I found this book. I love Flash now and have a strong foundation of it now because of this book. Yes, the book leaves you wanting more, but then it is only an introductory book. For those first getting into Flash. Keep in mind that Flash 5 and Flash 6 (MX) are different and the excerises in this book would not work with Flash 5, so I had to upgrade. If you are first starting out, try to get the latest which is Flash 6 (MX). Not quite sure what is the difference between MX and non-MX, but it is always good to have the latest.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Buy Review: This book is an excellent buy! Its not difficult and goes through a very good pace. I only spent about 3 hours currently on it and I'm already done with a quarter of the book. Other books are good references but to fully learn this software to get on the web quick, this is worth the investment in money and time!
Rating: Summary: Flashes lots of information!!! Review: This book is great. It has tons of pictures and lots of tips. There are lots of things I didn't know about Flash using its built-in help system, but this book told me lots of information. It includes a CD that has practice lessons for each excersise and movies to watch. I rate this book as the best source of Flash information for Mac/Apple Compauter and Windows.
Rating: Summary: Tremendous Book Review: This book is wonderful,I teach a Flash class and we use this book. Lynda Weinman is a tremendous writer, as a proffesional flash designer this book showed me things I never knew before. Its a five star.
Rating: Summary: Get ready to learn Flash like a pro Review: This book stands out from other books dealing with Flash because it makes you get your hands dirty by actually USING the program. It comes with a CD that contains trial software and movies that demonstrate exacly how to perform certain tasks. It's easy to read and while the first few chapters are perfect for beginners, by the time you get to the end of the book, you'll be creating Flash presentations at an expert level.
Rating: Summary: Great beginners guide to Flash MX Review: This book starts out very slowly teaching the fundamentals of Flash MX and then using the learned knowledge to advance to some of the other topics. The beginning of the book can seem somewhat annoying and tedious, but if you follow the book from the first chapter all the way through the end, you will be solid in fundamental Flash MX. Some of the examples seemed to be here to fill up space, for example there was one "lesson" showing how to convert a graphic to a symbol. If you know how to do this you already know there isn't much to this process. However, by including this type of information it won't leave you frustrated that they left steps out... as most tutorial books do. I WILL keep this as a reference, as it outlines the fundamentals of basic Flash MX projects. Naturally, your projects will become much more complex, but this can certainly serve as a refresher or starting point when you've got that idea but don't know how to make the connection from idea to to Flash MX. Good Book - I will look for Lynda Weinman books in the future. On last thing, I recently made the switch and I am running OS X - great job in making clear any differences between Mac OSX and Windows versions!
Rating: Summary: Fabulous! Review: This book was exactly what I had been looking for. I got my Digital Media degree and went through so many technologies so quickly, I only got a basic understanding of all of them- Flash included. This book helped me go back and review what I knew and WHY things are done the way they are. It answered why some of my projects didn't work and it also gave me a WHOLE new bunch of features to use. I do agree with a few of the others that if you have a solid knowledge of Flash already, you want something more in depth. However, for those of us trying to learn it quickly for basic functions, this book is wonderful. It is logically organized, no distracting typos or misinformation and the exercises and info on the CD actually match. I have 2 other books on Flash that I wasted money on- even after reading this book, I find that the others are useless and hard to understand. I think this book will be a nice reference if I forget something until I have used Flash more.
Rating: Summary: What a frustrating book! Review: This book was our class text for a Flash class. The exercises were pretty easy to follow, but weren't helpful enough if you wanted to create your own site. Many graphics, movie clips, buttons, sound files helpfully added to the library for each exercise, but not a whole lot on creating your own. This seasoned-but-technologically-immature designer needed more meat! Too many erratum. Can you say proofreader? And, when it gets time for you to publish your movie, the book just pretty much falls apart and loses steam. Not nearly enough Actionscripting help for this newbie--help which would decrease the file size of my movie! And HOW do I plug it into my webpage??? Now I'm scrambling for other reference books to figure it out. Not a great reference afterwards, either. I don't know that I'd recommend.
Rating: Summary: A great start to Flash development... Review: This book, accompanied by Macromedia's product tutorials, really helped me build a firm foundation for future Flash development. I found the content to be easy, well explained, informative and well structured. The book provides plenty of information, allowing you to get started on professional and functional web interfaces. Kymberlee Weil and Lynda Weinman did a fine job producing this book. The books does an excellent job of providing information on tools, tweening (shape and motion), pre-loaders and integration. You really can breeze through the examples, all the while gaining knowledge on how, where, and why you are doing certain tasks. A co-worker bought this book for our employee library. I'm going out to get my own.
Rating: Summary: Great Beginner's Book Review: This is a great book for a user begininng to learn Flash MX. Teaches you all the concepts of Flash. Sometimes the exercises can hold your hand a little too much, but you still can learn alot. I recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn Flash MX!
