Rating: Summary: Rock n' Blues Harmonica: A World of Harp Knowledge... Review: I started with Jon Gindick's book "Country and Blues Harmonica for the musically hopeless", and liked it so much I thought I would try this one as well. Both are excellent. While I was no longer an absolute beginner, this book would still be suitable for someone with no music experience at all. Even so, there was PLENTY of new and useful material for me. In fact I have a friend that I consider an advanced blues harp player, and he still enjoys these books and finds them very useful. The CD is packed with good instruction and music to play along with as you advance. The instruction is on one channel and the background music is on the other - cool idea to give you more control. I don't think you can go wrong with this one.

Rating: Summary: Musically challenged Review: I was one of the "musically challenged" people that Jon refers to in the opening chapter. I had bought a Hohner with instructions, but it was not until I got this book with the jammin cd that I really began to understand the harp. Jon's witty and easy to understand guidelines have given me a great start. Because of this book, I have bought another harp and began to build my cd library of great harp players. If you cannot even keep a beat and don't even know what a chord is, this is a must to start out.
Rating: Summary: Blow your money on this book Review: I'm not a harp guy, so I can't get technical; but as far as I'm concerned the search is over for harp instruction- I don't care what else is out there- even if it's good, it can't possibly be any better than this. Like Jon says, "five minutes to play, and five years to master". In a little more than five minutes, I was playing along with Jon's cd backup track. Maybe my playing sounds not so hot now but I'm sure having fun getting there. I like the book (nice drawings and interesting stories) but the cd is the killer. It's just great blues that won't bore you no matter how may times you listen.
Rating: Summary: The one book to own Review: If you've heard blues harmonica and thought "I could do that"... this is the book for you! There are plenty of books out there that can show you more, but I haven't found one that gets you comfortable with the instrument as quickly as this one.And just when you're comfortable with the harp, there's plenty more to learn with the book. For an enjoyable book on a wonderful instrument, this is the one to own.
Rating: Summary: "Rock N' Blues Harmonica" Review by Wes Koehler Review: January 23, 2002 I have been playing and studying harmonica lessons now for about 6 months. I have purchased numerous books at music stores and downloaded harp songs from the internet also. If I could go back in time 6 months, "Rock N' Blues Harmonica" by Jon Gindick would be my first choice for introductory and intermediate level harp lessons. The CD is excellent and a necessity when starting out on this instrument. My background in music encompasses 48 years starting out with tenor and alto saxaphone, bass guitar, upright bass, pedal steel guitar and dobro. My main instruments of study at this time are blues harp and keyboards (for blues and boogie- woogie of course). I now have 9 diatonic harps and am getting ready to order my first chromatic harp in a few weeks. Wes Koehler Fallbrook, California
Rating: Summary: Monster Revision Review: John has really gone above and beyond the call on this new addition. The first edition blew me away and this one goes beyond my wildest imagination. The story approach using his first edition characters adds fun and a common theme throughout his easy to understand instructional approach. I consider myself a newcomer to harp playing but his techniques have really accelerated my learning. Jam sessions with friends have really come together at a fast pace. His new edition is more like a indepth NEW book! The CD is fantastic. It includes new licks and is produced to play with or without his own harp playing. This means you can jam with John and then alone, on your own. This makes for an incredible learning tool! Thanks John! Bring on more...I can't wait for volume two.
Rating: Summary: Rock n' Blues Harmonica rocks!! Review: Jon Gindick is nothing short of genius. I've suffered through several books on blues harp without much success. Gindick had me blowing acceptable harp after 2 days. Gindick is an expert. That is not unusual. His ability to convey what he does and how he does it is rare. He shows you the technique was well as what will and what won't work. Gindick maps out the harmonica in such a way that you can play along with any 12 bar blues and not make a mistake. The easy to understand music theory was the key that unlocked the door for me. Gindick guides you from the basics to the intricate in an easy and enjoyable pace. One of the first tunes he teaches is a bluesy rendition of "Amazing Grace" which sounds great from the moment you first practice it. If your goal is to be able to play harmonica that sounds great in a very short period of time, Rock n' Blues Harmonica essential. I only regret that I didn't stumble across this book first.
Rating: Summary: Jon Gindick, Super Teacher Review: Jon is a natural born teacher. He has an uncanny way of making sense of music. Jon makes the harmonica "easy" and fun.
Rating: Summary: Gindick WILL teach you to jam! Review: Musically Hopeless No More. By studying Jon's books, Harmonica for the Musically Hopeless and Rock n Blues Harmonica, I have learned how to play with a band in 9 months. Gindick speaks the language of the people while carefully teaching you the basics in a way that is interesting and fun. Since Jon recommended that I learn from as many people as I could, I have scoured the blues "how to" literature. Gindick's books are my favorites.
