Rating: Summary: This One Tops Them All Review: Over the years, Jon Gindick has produced a wealth of harmonica instruction books, tapes, and CD's. With Rock n' Blues Harmonica he has put together the most awesome package of all. The accompanying CD is incredible. Jon makes it fun!
Rating: Summary: wonderful book! Review: Perhaps the overall best book on the market on the deceptively simple yet amazingly complicated "people's instrument" -- the harmonica. Gindick's book, loaded with terrific anecdotes and great artwork, offers everything you've always wanted to know about the harp presented in a funny, always engaging and comprehensive format. If you are looking for one book to buy on the harmonica, I'd say this is it.
Rating: Summary: The CD is outstanding! Review: The first edition was decent. This edition is outstanding. I wonder why he didn't include the CD with the first one. The book is good, the CD is better. If you want to do more than just memorize other people's songs (what most books teach), this book is for you. You will learn to improvise and play confidently with other musicians. Gindick is the master of teaching harp. I've played for about 2.5 years and his material has kept me going. I have about 30 different instruction books/tapes. Ginick's are the best.
Rating: Summary: A great starter, plus good reference. Review: There are a lot of books out there for the people who REALLY want to get into the musical theory, but what about the beginner? Yes, there's a quite a bit of fancyful storytelling about Stone, the caveman hamonica player and his experiences, but that's just one of the things that separates this book from the hundreds of other instruction books that just get too technical for the person starting out. IF YOU WANT TO GO FROM ABSOLUTE BEGINNER TO CAPABLE HARMONICA PLAYER (with practice), YOU MUST HAVE THIS BOOK!! Rather than confuse the novice with a lot of theory, Jon Gindick gets right to the heart of the matter... how to develop a "feel" for the instrument, and learn what notes sound right -- then weave that into your own blues improvisation. Then, if you want the technical info (and, yes, it is really needed), that's in the back. Bottom line... this is an enjoyable book that breaks from tradition and shows you how to sound good in a simple manner.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: This book and companion CD just work. It is fun, and full of insight and detailed instructions, not to say audio examples!
I don't like the tone and "jokes" in the book, and skim through the "caveman" parts (those who read the book know what I mean), but who cares if the goal of having fun with the harmonica is achieved!
I also purchased the Idiot's guide - but will return it. It is so verbose and dull. Just no fun! and playing the harmonica should be fun ...
Rating: Summary: too much nonsense in this book Review: This book contains so much extra nonsense it was rather annoying to read. The book describes itself as containing, "a world of harp knowledge, songs, stories, lessons, etc.. . The bad thing is the "stories" were some nonsense about ficitional characters running around in caveman times and their experiences with music and the harmonica. The book does contain useful info, mixed in with the foolish stories, making it twice as long as it needs to be. I did however find the included CD somewhat helpful. I have a pretty good music background and was looking for something a little less, "age 8 and under", I guess.
Rating: Summary: Great Reading Review: This is a great read even if one is not interested in playing the harmonica/harp. All readers must know by now how good this book is for musical instruction, but at the same time it is very enjoyable reading. I had a smile on my face the whole time while reading it twice. Jon's style is fantastic. With the included CD this item was very helpful and I can't say enough on how good it is. On a scale of five stars this rates a TEN.

For anyone who is just starting out learning to play harmonica in the style of the blues, Jon Gindick is the man to get you started. This book/CD set, along with his video "Country and Blues Harmonica for the Absolute Beginner," will definitely get you on your way to blowin' the blues on the harmonica. Buy them both, and you're set!
Rating: Summary: an incredible learning tool! Review: Two months ago the only song I could play on the harmonica was Neil Youngs "Heart of Gold". One hour after receiving Jon's book, I was improvising blues licks and solos. Last night I played harmonica at a blues jam at a local night spot. Thanks to Jon's clear and fun way of teaching I was improvising solos on everything from Little Walter to Muddy Waters tunes. Friends Who I have played guitar with before were asking "When did you learn to do that?" If you want to learn to play blues harp, BUY THIS BOOK! Jon is THE MAN!
