Summary: Understanding smart humor...
Review: Reviews have been written that stress the lack of "smarts" in Jon Stewart's humor. To that, I can only comment that it takes a somewhat intelligent person to understand smart humor in the first place. With that being said, Stewart has the audacity to push the limits of what is comdically acceptable and the sense to KISS (keep it simple stupid). As a cold war historian, I particluarly enjoyed "The Ford Tapes" and can see how that might have actually happened. If you love The Daily Show, get this book. If you can't read or comprehend what you read, then don't waste your time. I highly recommend this witty book.

Summary: Humor?
Review: I can not believe some of the reviews of this book call it educated humor. I think a pull my finger joke would have more humor than some of these stories. They are terrible. How many Jew jokes can a guy get away with? I am offended and would recommend that you buy something with real wit!

Summary: Jon Stewart--naked for you
Review: I like Jon Stewart. I think he is a brilliant comedian (we won't talk about his movies, that seems to be his Achilles Heel). The Daily Show is great, I try never to miss it. And you can tell Stewart is an intelligent, well-read man. His jokes work on two levels, or more.

That being said, I was a bit disappointed in his book. I found it to be very uneven. Therea are some great 'bits', but there are many that are bad. Such as the first 'chapter' where the Kennedy's are the target of his wit. It fell short. Next is a slightly better, but still weak bit on the Hansons (does anyone even remember them?). As is "The Ford Tapes" where Stewart spoofs Ford and his brief presidency. The next bit that pokes fun at Martha Stewart is better. This one isn't bad. It falls in the middle category, because it wasn't all that great. "The New Judaism", which follows, is better still, though still not 'Laugh-out-loud" like one blurb announces. His next bit, better still, takes on Princess Di and Mother Teresa (showing that nothing is sacred to a comic who is truly cutting edge) in a series of letters Di sends to Teresa. "Local News" drops us back to the awfulness of the early bits as it gives us the death of the talking Taco Bell Chihuaha. It's only about two pages (thank god). But we go back to the quality of Di/Teresa with Stewart satirizing the last supper--we get the journal from the waiter. Nice touch. I don't know what to say about the next bit, which is Da Vinci's lost notebook. The next bit is "The Cult" which is really great. This is one of the bits where you see Stewart at his best. But we immeidately drop to a lame bit, "Five Under Five," which satirizes these lists of people to watch ('Best 25 Under 25'). Then is the postmodern/experimental bit, "The Recipe," which satirizes these awards shows that seem to populate the airwaves, appearing what i swear is every other night. The next bit takes on Bill Gates (and his selling of his soul to the devil), which is good, but not great (more Di than Cult). The next bit is Van Gogh in AOL chat rooms. Pretty realistic, and a nice effort, but there was so much that could have been done with it that just wasn't done. It fell a bit flat. "Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold", more of a dark humor short-short story, follows, and it isn't bad. The Larry King interview with Hitler that follows is great. I don't know if I'd say it or "The Cult" is better. Then he spoofs sitcoms by asking the what if: What if network tv had tried to work with Lenny Bruce to make a sitcome. Great stuff here (but you have to be familiar with Bruce's work to really get it). Then we finish up with a brief my spelling, Microsoft Spellchecker's Correction. Jon, it's been done before--way too many times. It's so cliche, it just can't be funny.

So, would I recommend you buy this book? Depends. If you are a Jon Stewart fan, then you will like the book. Also, there are the three great chapters--Lenny Bruce, Hitler's interview, and "The Cult"--as well as a few more good ones. Yeah, I'd say it's worth your money (better than getting another Reisner).

Summary: In the world of smart humor, Jon Stewart is king...
Review: This guy graduated 3rd in his High school class- he's smart. He was influenced by Steve Martin and other greats- he's funny as hell. You can't be truly funny without a brain. Jon Stewart really is one of the best comedians of our time. Refreshingly unique and daring to be different, but also never putting himself above anyone else (unless he's mocking them- and if he is they probably deserve it). When you read/watch Jon, you're just getting Jon. I HIGHLY recommend this book- he has a brilliant and rare style of humor. He has another book coming out soon- I think it's a bit more political in nature, but I expect it will also be a great read.

Summary: If you don't expect too much, you won't be let down
Review: What is amazing about Jon Stewart is that he keeps getting good jobs despite his failures. He currently works the Daily Show, despite every other show he had bottoming out. This book is a demostration of why he has failed.

Many of the jokes/stories in this book are old jokes that he recycled and put a slightly new twist on. For example, how many jokes about the Kennedy family can be funny? While the new twists are often creative, they fail to actually be FUNNY! The story about Hitler 2000 was creative, but it was not laugh out loud funny. Also, the new Judiasm joke was humorous, but most people do not have the funny bone for Jewish jokes. Otherwise, Woody Allen would still be huge.

In this book, Jon Stewart tries to be something he is clearly not, funny. George Carlin knows how to write a humorous book. Stewart knows how to luck out and get good tv jobs and book deals with little talent. The high ratings for this book are fraudulent.

Summary: Very Very Good! I want book #2!!!
Review: That Jon Stewart is one of the smartest, funniest comedians around is a given. Anyone whose seen him on the Daily Show knows that. The Daily Show is the best comedy on cable tv, and one of the best comedies around. Just recently it was nominated for an emmy. I've been a fan of that show from the beginning with Craig Kilborn. When Craig left, I was quite uneasy about the show's future. I knew nothing about Jon Stewart, at first in the commercials I even confused him with Richard Lewis. Needless to say, Stewart tremendously improved the show, which is impressive since the show was good to start off with. He is am impeccable interviewer, and he is a quick witted, sharp, and inventive guy.

All his brilliance from tv translates perfectly into this concise, funny book. This should come as no surprise, since Stewart is the head writer on the Daily Show, and his essays have appeared in many national magazines, but what he does in this book is much different from anything on the Daily Show. The only comparisson I can make is to the three Woody Allen books, which are written in a similar format as this, with the occasional mini-play thrown in for good measure. That's not to say it's a ripoff of Woody Allen, it's not. None of Woody's books have used drawings for humor, like he did on "Da Vinci: The Lost Notebook," and Woody Allen's books largely don't center around actual historical people and celebrities as Stewart's does. The whole book is good, and some of my favorites are Breakfast at Kennedy's, The Ford Tapes, The Last Supper, Adolf Hitler: The Larry King Interview, and Lenny Bruce, the making of a sitcom (not to mention the funny back cover of the book with a revealing photo of an anonymous bearded fellow). In short, Jon Stewart fans will love this, and everybody else will turn into a Jon Stewart fan after reading this.

IF JON STEWART IS READING THIS, PLEASE, WRITE ANOTHER BOOK!!!!

Summary: The Future of Television (or books at least)
Review: It's not hard to tell why The Daily Show was more than happy to let Craig Kilborn go...mostly because Jon Stewart is better. And for anyone that doubts that this comic-turned-host has lost touch of his roots, you can be sure that he hasn't missed a beat. This book is one of my all time favorites, simply because there aren't many comedians out there who would use their book deal to compile a set of "essays" written in every possible format, instead of giving us the ol' binded stand up. Get this book and you too can have the frightening image of Abe Lincoln's nipples burned in your dreams each night.

Summary: One of the funniest books I've ever read.
Review: So many comedians just don't translate well to print (Steve Martin being the worst among them), but Jon Stewart absolutely does. This book is brilliant, absolutely hilarious. He has a unique, sort of twisted way of looking at things, and thinking of things normal people just don't conceive of. Such as The Last Supper as told through the eyes of the poor sap waiter who had to wait on them...I've given this book as a gift to several people, and since mine is now autographed I won't lend it out anymore. This is a MUST read. He's completely nuts and we all benefit from it!!
