Rating: Summary: Make it spiral bound Review: Originally I borrowed this book from a neighbor and it was great. It had a collection of simple chord songs that allowed me (a beginning guitar player) to quickly play a collection of singable songs. I was so impressed I went out and bought my own version. The problem is that the reprint version is NOT spiral bound (all music books and ccok books should be spiral bound). My solution? I took it to Kinkos and had the binding cut off and had it spiral bound by them... It is worth EVERY penny!
Rating: Summary: A "Must Own" for EVERY guitar owner Review: RISE UP SINGING contains every campfire, boyscout, girlscout, sing-along song ever sung. Plus the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, and James Taylor tunes you want to play in keys you can play them in. The best songbook ever! No one I know has ever bought their own copy: people love this book so much they give them as gifts.
Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: This book has displayed the best collection of songs. Review: Rise up Singing is a fun, educational song book for all ages. Some songs take you back to the tunes of the fiftees. And others make you remember the fight to end war, and equality.
Rating: Summary: The BEST Songbook Available Review: Rise Up Singing is an amazing book, filled with lyrics and chords to songs that are part of the heart of America and the world at large. The only drawback in this book is the lack of staff, but as they point out in the preface, music is a community experience, if you don't know the melody of a particular song, one of your friends will. Share the book, share the experience, share the music.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful book for group singing Review: Rise up Singing is an amazing book. Easy to follow and diverse in its repertoire, the book gives plenty of folk songs and great tunes from the 50s-60s to sing-a-long with your friends and family.
A definite hit at parties and small gatherings, whenever music-lovers are involved :-)
Rating: Summary: A Caution fro Buyers of This Book Review: The folks who put this together have really done a tremendous amount of work, and if this is your style of music, you cannot help but be satisfied. This book is quite comprehensive of a certain style, but use caution if you are looking for many traditional songs, or if you have much reverence for your country or its heritage. For example, the section on songs about America has as many that are derisive of the American people as are praising. The section on Men consists chiefly of songs like "Let the Woman in You Come Through" and other sophomoric satires of male values. You will not find the traditional "Red Wing", but you will find "Union Maid" which used the same tune a century later. You will not find "May the Circle be Unbroken", but you will find a parody of it. "Battle Hymn of the Republic" is too obscure to be included, but ever-popular "The Battle Hymn of Women" is here. If you are not comfortable with these substitutions, you may wish to steer clear.
Rating: Summary: Great selection, weak chords Review: The great thing about this book is its comprehensiveness: you won't find a collection of this size and variety anywhere else.Unfortunately, the book uses a quirky and often difficult-to-understand chord notation that has two main problems. First, I have found the chords to often be, simply, wrong--both to my ear and in comparison to other, more authoritative books. Second, the chords are simply listed--there is no time signature or rhythm information. How long do you play these chords? A quarter-note? A whole? An eighth? It drives me crazy, as I have found several songs unplayable.
Rating: Summary: The Best Review: this book has brought pure joy over the years...not only is it inclusive of so many good songs...it provides an index by first lines and so many times we have the first line but no title in our heads.
i highly applaud this for anyone who needs words to songs...no music but cords are provided. it is hard to find many songs not printed in this folk/rock/mountian/classic/ book when an informal group of guitars and dulcimers and flutes and fiddles get together.
super book...just super.

Rating: Summary: The one songbook to own if you only own one! Review: This book has THE most comprehensive collection of American songs to be found anywhere! I use many sources in my work as a lower-elementary school teacher, but this volume gets the most use. The chord charts are simple and not hard to use, but it helps to have a clue about how a tune goes beforehand. (There are cassettes available that accompany this book, but I imagine they're inconvenient to use.) So, you will have trouble learning songs you don't already know. Full length lyrics often come with popular variations included. You could use this book to sing from even if you don't play guitar. Would echo the recommendation to buy the spiral-bound version, but with the caveat to treat it gently as the pages can and do tear out!
