Summary: Indispensible & a classic
Review: This book has to be experienced to be believed. Compressing 1200 songs into less than 300 pages, it is a masterpiece of concise musical reference. The songs are organized into chapters based on themes, but there is also an excellent index which even lets you to look up a song by its first line. Extremely handy!

Some people have mentioned finding the book confusing or poorly laid out/organized. While I disagree I can understand how it might be that way for some. The abbreviated chord notations don't convey the timing details as well as regular sheet music, and there are no melody notes (vocal part) so you really have to be somewhat familar with the song. But there is a definite logic to their notation system, which is explained at the beginning of the book, and I think they've done a fabulous job of squeezing a huge amount (and variety) of music into a really small space. It replaces several times its weight in other songbooks and the spiral binding is not only convenient but also very durable.

Summary: The best song book I always wished I had!
Review: This book has, it seems, it all! All the words to all those fun songs that I have heard, sang when I was a kid, that my dad sang when he was a kid, and more. I really felt I had found a jewel when I found this at the library and now of course am rushing to have my own copy.

Summary: Constant Companion
Review: This book is always on the top of the pile on the piano or music stand since it gets constantly referred to in our folkmusic avocation. If you get the paperback, get it coil bound at Kinkos...It needs to be freely openable because it will be opened often.

Summary: Rise Up Singing: an indispensable song resoucre for teachers
Review: This is an indispensible song book guaranteed to provide hours of classroom fun! I have used this book for years in my primary and intermediate classrooms. The book has never failed to provide me with a song to go with any subject I was teaching. When I couldn't afford the accompanying song teaching tapes, I used the lyrics for poetry! The Table of Contents is arranged by subject. The index is broken into several different lists including culture and title!

Summary: Something for everyone- - -This is an excellent book!!
Review: This is the first songbook I was given years ago. I still have it, and still play out of it. There are songs from almost every genre, presented in a format that makes them accessable to singers and players of many levels of expertise. I give this book as a gift on a regular basis, especially to folks who are just starting out on guitar. The intro by Pete Seeger is inspiring and uplifting, and the hundreds of songs make this book a well used old friend.
