Rating: Summary: The best I have seen. Review: I began playing the guitar in 1969. My preference was hard rock, and at 45 years old, it still is. I have looked at (and purchased) many hundreds of dollars worth of instructional books, audio tapes, CD's and videos. This is the finest heavy metal instructional book and CD I have found yet. Mr. Stetina takes a wonderfully comprehensive approach to presenting some of the hottest techniques I have yet to see. I would be happy to pay twice the price for this information. It would be worth every penny.
Rating: Summary: Not for the faint of Heart... Review: I have been playing Guitar for ten years now, and I still keep going back to this damn book! For the most part, by just listening to the CD you will lock onto some lick you like and that is where it starts. From there you are taught how to Practice correctly and more efficiently. Not to mention that some of these exercises are DAMN fast! Better get out that metronome...
Rating: Summary: The Ultimate Lead Guitar Book Review: I haven't been playing guitar a very long time, maybe 6 years, but with the help of this tactical approach to speed, i am slowly picking up speed (even using my pinky, something i thought i would never do0. repetition and slow practicing is the key, and this shows you the way. don't get discouraged if you can't keep up with troy and his faster versions of each exrecise. keep it slow, work on it, and you'll get it. his view on finger independence is genius, literally introducing it within the first 2 pages of actual exercises. this is a good approach, and gives even those of experience a challange. though the cd is not essential for learning the routines, it does help and gives you an idea of where you are at when it comes to accuracy and speed.not a begginers book! if you know what your doing and you could get you way around the guitar ok, get this book. it truely is the ultimate lead guitar book.
Rating: Summary: kicks fingers!!!! Review: i just got this book and i'm only a few pages into it. already my fingers hurt and my playing has improved dramatically. i love it! i seriously doubt i'll ever be able to play as fast as this guy, but he's got me running nimble around the fret board, and other licks which used to give me hell are now easy by comparison.
i'm looking forward to more long jam sessions with guitar in hand and book in view. my only complaint is that the CD tracks are not broken up into smaller bite sized pieces. this would make it much easier to review and repeat related sections. other than that, it's the bomb!
Rating: Summary: Hands Like Spiderman Review: I know the title sounds comical(pun intended)but what this book does for you is no joke. It matters not style or genre of guitar that your into because as guitarists we all must have certain things down pack, i.e. control of your guitar and the necessary chops to pull off whatever you desire. This book will get you there I promise because after doing just a few exercise with regular practice I felt like the hands that I've had all my life were transformed, more strength, speed and control. I remember just feeling like are these hands mine and saying is this me. Yeah baby, I actually felt, seen and most importantly heard the difference in my playing and I was tremendously happy and looked forward to continued practice but also the exercises got more challenging and if your like me when things get a bit rough you look for an alternate O.K. I meant easier path, but i tell you honestly if you want to stomp with the big dogs or stomp the big dog this book will give you the chops you need to smoke em!
Rating: Summary: Great for mechanics Review: I like the book and am still working with it after 3 months. The book comprises 3 parts: Mechanical Ability, Rhythmical Ability, and Creativity. Part I (46 pages) is great, part II (10 pages) is adequate, but part III is very weak (12 pages). Quality overall is good, but the page count will give you an idea of the strengths and weaknesses. The book highlighted problems I was having (left-right hand coordination problems) and gave me exercises to fix them. The "Flight of the Bumblebee" is one of my favourites, a great workout, especially for my lazy LH pinky! I've been playing acoustic for years, but just started electric a year ago with a teacher. This book is a lot more systematic than what I was getting from my teacher, and has been really helpful.
Rating: Summary: Worth writing a review for Review: I read every review on here and decided enough of them claimed that this book would provide results quickly that I'd give it a shot. I received it two days ago and kid you not, am amazed at how my playing (speed and accuracy) has improved in that short time. I first listened to the CD and thought 'whoa, it'll be a year before I can reproduce that'. Then I got into the exercises. I put in 4 hours yesterday and 2 1/2 this morning. My arm is sore! More importantly, I'm playing runs that I would not have been able to two days ago. Now, I know I'll plateau, and struggle to improve after a certain point, but even if that point comes in another two days this book was worth the money. It broke me out of the "blues scale blues" and got me to rocking again. And it will only get better. I'm only 4 pages into it! Granted, I've been playing for 18 years, but 8 of those have been stagnent pulling my guitar out from under the bed only a couple times a year. I've got the bug again and this book is just fueling the drive to play better.
Rating: Summary: I cannot overstate the importance of owning this book! Review: I was recommended this book back in 1995 by a veteran guitar player. It is the most comprehensive and unpretentious book on how to be an exemplary guitar player. In his CD and book, Troy Stetina takes you step by step on how to practice to be able to play not only lead, but rhythm guitar. A must have book for those who are serious at being the best they can be. Also recommended is "Fretboard Logic" by Bill Edwards. If you are serious about playing guitar, these are the two must haves! Now, git!
Rating: Summary: Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar : Becoming the Best You Can Review: I wish I had known about this book sooner! ... Rating: Summary: A collection of speed excercises from novice to virtuoso... Review: I'd have to say that even after owning this book for a few weeks, it has already helped me greatly improve my abilities and repretoire as a guitarist. The excercises contained in this book have provided me with a vast number of tools by which to build my speed and accuracy. The sweep picking section was incredibly challenging, and I am sure that I will be using this book years down the line. I would recommend this book to ANY guitarist, young and old.
