Summary: THE ONION has done it again...
Review: This book takes "Finest News Reporting" to the next level, with the best articles mixed together into 4-page issues. Some of the stuff in here is THE ONION's usual smirk-into-your-coffee funny, but a large portion of it is the above-and-beyond laugh-hysterically-force-your-friends-to-read-it type funny. Enjoy.

Summary: A book for the ages
Review: This is a book to pass on to future generations to share the absuridity that is modern society. The writers of The Onion are brutal, yet painfully funny. Rarely does a book move me to tears from laughter. This one does.

Summary: Funny Stuff
Review: This is the book I go to when I have had an, all to frequent, arduous day. A glass of wine and a story from Dispatches From The Tenth Circle puts me back on track. I grew up reading Mad Magazine and watching Saturday Night Live on television. When Mad Magazine became no longer funny and SNL got weird, I turned to The Onion.

Some days I find myself reading impaired. But Dispatches has some great visuals too, so I don't have to read. I can just sit in my rocking chair, and drool, and laugh.

I'm a card-carrying cynic. I also think that I have a sense of humor. It would be my dream to be a presenter at The Darwin Awards. "And the Darwin Award for the Goofiest Moron goes to..." I could do that. I love this book and so will you. Cammy Diaz-lawyer

Summary: The onion provides the finest satire in the 21st century
Review: Through blunt and undiscriminating and politically incorrect straightfaced satire, this collection made me laugh loud and often.

Summary: "The Onion" Offends Texas Librarian
Review: Too much profanity! I would buy this book if it didn't have so many cuss words in it. I flipped through it at the library and it has some witty, hilarious stuff in it, but it makes me cringe to see the f-word, the s-word and worse on every other page. Here's hoping someday they will do a cleaned-up version for those of us who don't think potty language is too clever.

Summary: The Best Satirists in Town
Review: Vulgar, puerile, absurd, and absolutely hilarious, the satirical paper the Onion has grown steady in popularity and acclaim, particularly after they took on the entire 20th century, with "Our Dumb Century", and it hit the bestseller list (Deserved. It is five star brilliant as well). This collection makes me laugh so hard it frequently causes me to mix my metaphors. Leaving no sacred cow unturned they lampoon everything and anyone up to and including God. Yes, even our Supreme Deity gets his (though unfortunately, this collection does not include their brilliant, "God Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder"), though don't feel too bad for him, in a small corner of one page there is a brief article about God waking up from his bad dream (the universe ends), only to be consoled and comforted by Suzanne Pleshette. But their main targets, of course, like all good satirists are popular culture, politics, and political correctness. There are examples of weekly interviews with the "average person on the street" (who always look suspiciously familiar) with their thoughts on current affairs. There are a number of examples of work by their "award-winning" columnists; my favorite being Jackie Harvey who excitedly (he uses a lot of exclamation points!) tells you about the most trivial goings-on in the entertainment world as well as in his, and frequently gets things confused. There's "Point/Counterpoint"; the abortion debate is a gem. There's even "What's on Television Tonight". Sample: "Real People in Real Pain": Fox Channel; "Mid-Budget Galaxy": Sci-Fi Channel; "This Here My Dog": TNN; "Incontinent Rhinos": Animal Planet; "Inaudible City Council Meeting": Public Access. Most of my favorites I'd read on-line at their weekly website, though I've founds some new faves I'd missed such as, "Republicans, Dadaists Declare War on Art", but I needed to buy this book anyway for "future easy reference". Ye of sensitive sensibilities beware, their website posts the warning: "Intended for those over 18 years of age", and they mean it, bucko. Know your onions.

Summary: You Can't Beat The Onion for Dark Humor
Review: While just about every single word in this volume is reprinted from the weekly editions on The Onion's website, you still gotta love this book which you can take anywhere, and make people wonder while you're laughing so hard. Most people think The Onion is merely a political satire and humor magazine, but the way they make fun of current events is surprisingly deep and the dark, observational humor is often ingenious and even disturbing.

Headlines of note in this book are "ACLU Defends Nazis' Right to Burn Down ACLU Headquarters" in which The Onion finds the contradications in so-called political correctness (lest you think The Onion is all bleeding-heart leftists); "Columbine Jocks Safely Resume Bullying" in which The Onion can see the uncomfortable truth that nobody else wants to admit to; and "Hershey's Ordered to Pay Obese Americans $135 Billion" where we can see the irony and hypocrisy in lawsuits that people use to blame others for their problems.

To alleviate the heaviness, many of the articles are just plain slapstick humor, but always with an intelligent edge, like "Dolphins Evolve Opposable Thumbs", or "Casual One-Nighter Gives Strom Thurmond Change of Heart on Homosexuality Issue."

Whether the stories are just lightweight social satire, or downright disturbing and deeply insightful, they're mostly hysterical in the true Onion tradition. Even the pieces by the "guest columnists" can be deeper than expected. But in light of recent events, watch out for the stories "Terrorist Annoyed by Delayed Flight" and "Arabs, Israelis Sign 'Screw Piece' Accord". Some of this humor isn't for the easily disturbed or offended, that's for sure.

Summary: The ultimate skewering of sacred cows.
Review: With their amazing ear for the banality of modern media and complete willingness to give offensive, the editors of "The Onion" have created a dark comedy masterpiece. Nothing is out of bounds here, and there's no line they aren't willing to cross - thank god. They are equally adept at pillorying the obvious targets ("Oprah Viewers Patiently Awaiting Instructions") and pointing out the subtle absurdities of our consumer culture ("Funyuns Still Outselling Responsibilityuns"). Each and every headline is a comedic gem. A perfect gift for the most sarcastic, irreverent person on your list.

Summary: Yes, it IS worth it - even though it is free on the web
Review: You may ask yourself whether it is worth spending money on this book when the content is available on their website for free. The answer is yes - absolutely!

Somehow, on paper these hilarious dispatches are even better than on your computer screen. Trust me.

You will be reading it again, and again, and again; sharing it with friends and enjoying every bit of the exquisite dark humour will be a pleasure that will last and last.
