Summary: Maze is a book you can put down...FOR YEARS!
Review: A few of us have persisted in seeking a solution to Manson's Maze.

The Maze is an intriguing work but the frustration is that there has never been an authoritative solution confirmed by the author or publisher. The FAQ for the news group rec.puzzles does not yet show the most recent material which can be found at http://www.frontiernet.net/~jmb184/maze/

Some month's ago I set up this web folder which collects the various proposals regarding Maze. Several people have graciously submitted material, all of which is posted there.

Summary: A SUPERB CHALLENGE FOR SERIOUS PUZZLE-DOERS. UNIQUE.
Review: A UNIQUE CHALLENGE FOR THOSE WHO HAVE SEEN EVEERYTHING IN PUZZLES. AS A BOOK STORE OWNER, I HAVE SOLD DOZENS. YOU WILL NEED A PAD AND PENCIL AND A GOOD MEMORY. ENJOY!

Summary: maze: the deception
Review: After putting each "room" on a card and placing them on a table, I have found that the answer isn't forthcoming nor is the response from he publisher or author (as of yet). I hav e a suspicion that this is a grand illusion and that is no fun!

Summary: I'm a bit dizzy.
Review: All I can say is that it all starts making sense at about 3AM on a Tuesday, when you and your roommate are sitting hunched in the middle of your dorm room with pencils, frantically drawn loopy maps, fragments of rebusses, and the fact that there's just something *wrong* with the stick figure in the basement. That's when you stare blearily at page three and say, "We've been blind, we've been blind the whole time," and start babbling conspiracy theories.

In short, the art is beautiful and eerie, the puzzle is intensely difficult, and it will either make you lose sleep or give you nightmares. Five stars.

Summary: Not A Book, But A Maze Shaped Like A Book
Review: An engrossing, intriguing, thought-provoking, perspective-changing, paradigm-shifting...maze. This is a work of genious. I can't think of any book, puzzle, or movie to compare it to (except maybe "Pi" or "Hellraiser" minus the math and the horror). The very subtle yet surreal illustrations and short dialouges from your guide draw the visitor/reader into a somewhat hellish underworld of the Maze. A friend had this book about 10 years ago, and the illustration style and overall eerieness and CHALLENGE has made me purchase it. I'm mediocre with puzzles, and I can't even get a good start without doubt my total interpretation of the "clues". I give it 5 stars for the premise, but would subtract a half star because the symbolism used is as unintelligible as Lewis Carroll or Aleister Crowley's nonsense. The only solution we've figured out involves "cheating", unless that's the real solution. Notice on the cover how there is a very ambiguous fish over the door? Well, that's what its like inside, too: "ambiguous at best." Utterly unique, though.

Summary: You will literally get 'lost' in this book!
Review: An old mansion, a mysterious guide, and a hidden riddle. Elements that would make any great mystery book. But _Maze_ by Christopher Manson is not a mystery book, it's a childrens that book that has baffled every adult I've ever introduced to it! Each page is a beautifully illustrated image of one room in the mansion. Follow the doors and clues to find the shortest route to the last page. Sounds easy? It's not! I don't know anyone who's solved it (although there are Internet FAQs of possible solutions). Why? As you travel through the mansion, you suddenly notice funny things - the labyrinth seems to be turning in on itself. "Haven't I been here before?" is now your trademark. You are lost! Trapped! Muahahahaa!!!! This book is 'captivating' and I highly recommend it.

Summary: Once you enter The Maze, you'll never forget it . . .
Review: As an elementary school teacher, I have read thousands of childern's books. This is one of the best.

There are layers upon layers of meaning to peel away. My second graders were stimulated by the pictures and the physical structure of the maze. The fifth graders I shared it with began to discover the subtlety of the textual clues. In middle school, the students noticed non-linear connections between rooms in the maze, complexities in the placement of the chambers, and the double entendres of the mysterious host.

As an adult, I found myself thrilled by the challenge of The Maze, the creepy ambiguity of meaning, and a pervading sinister feeling that made my stomach uneasy and gave me goosebumps up and down my arms.

I envy those who are stepping into the entrance hall for the first time . . . Good Luck!
