Summary: Down To Earth Film Essays From Guy Trapped In Space
Review: Mike Nelson of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" noteriety is the anti-Ebert. How many times have you, as an avid film buff (or even as just somebody who likes movies) been rifling through the latest gauntlet of movie reviews of the new flick you were interested in, only to get the impression that the critic giving the review just wants to show off that he has a film and literature degree from an Ivy-League college you're not smart enough or rich enough for? Well, dear friends, Mike Nelson is not here to berate you for liking a movie like "Gladiator" despite dubious historical revisionism. Although he may disagree over the appeal of Adam Sandler. In "Mike Nelson's Movie Megacheese!" you get an affordable and handy companion, or alternative, to the high-minded but often way off-target ego-driven movie guides by the likes of Maltin and Ebert. It's not as all-inclusive as these tomes, but then, it's also a lot lighter, easier to flip through and best of all-no long discussions about some film you've never heard of! Doing to film criticism what he did to B-Movies for 7 years on MST, Mike Nelson is giving film fans a book they can actually read all the way through without having to search and re-search for the good parts! Take "The Onion" publications and the "Movie Hound" series, and you've got one of the funniest movie guides around.

Summary: Mike Nelson's Movie Megacheese
Review: The second host of the beloved, but criminally underappreciated, Mystery Science Theatre 3000 brings his critical and hilarious touch to movies the television show could never afford.

And what a rich vein it is. Twister, The Blair Witch Project, Batman and Robin, Anaconda, Van Damme, Jim Carrey, Keanu Reeves and a host of other movies and stars are exposed to Nelson's poison Midwestern pen.

Some may find his critical tone too harsh on some subjects or objects (and with Van Damme "object" is the appropriate word) but if you believe that Hollywood makes half-hearted efforts with movies because the studios know they can get away with it at the boxoffice, then this book will crystallize your thoughts. You will laugh at its wit while nodding your hid in vociforous agreement.

Summary: My thoughts on "Megacheese"
Review: Naturally, "Mike Nelson's Movie Megacheese" is a required purchase for those people who grew to love this amiable Everyman on TV's "Mystery Science Theater 3000." And who didn't, really? Nelson is still plugging away at bad movies, although this time he trains his satiric guns on such mainstream Hollywood fare as "Sphere" and "Barb Wire," while on MST3K, he was largely limited to making cracks about such pathetic b-movies as "Track of the Moon Beast" and "Invasion of the Neptune Men." With MST3K now sadly cancelled, Mike Nelson can take on some films that are especially worthy of his brand of scathing sarcasm -- namely, big-budget Hollywood trash.

In a sense, Nelson's new book is a movie-goer's manifesto. His reviews rail against the endless stream of brain-dead, cookie-cutter "blockbusters" that Hollywood studios insist on churning out, year after year. How appropriate that "Megacheese" should come out during the summer, the season during which viewers are bombarded by films which give special effects top priority over such trivial details as plot and character.

If you've ever been suckered into seeing such a movie and felt guilty about it later, you will certainly get a laugh or three out of "Mike Nelson's Movie Megacheese." If you're one of the Hollywood weasels responsible for these movies, reading Nelson's book might be a painful experience.

Summary: More Mike!
Review: The dry, intellectual wit of Mike Nelson is as endearing in print as it was on film. The former host of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" has once again stepped forward to show the rest of us that--yes--bad movies can be fun!

"Movie Megacheese" is a collection of essays focusing on movies that are endearingly devoid of plot, character development, proper lighting, and occasionally, dialogue. His tone, though, is never condescending. If you look beneath the humor, you will find a man who does not hide his affinity for these film-makers. Talent? No, they don't have it...but dang it, they're not going to let that stop them!

I do think you will enjoy this book, even if you are not familiar with "MST3K". It is laugh out loud funny, timeless and enjoyable to read. And hey,...it even makes a lovely drink coaster when you're done!

Summary: Wonderful.
Review: I don't know the last time I laughed out loud while reading a book, and with this book I know it happened at least 15 times. I drove my wife nuts by constantly interrupting her reading to read passages from Movie Megacheese (I just bought three more copies to give to friends so I wouldn't drive them nuts). Mike Nelson has the most incredibly intelligent and dry sense of humor I have ever experienced in an author. BUY THIS BOOK!

Summary: How did he do it?
Review: In more than at least 4 years of my life watching Mike on TV it's nice to know he is still around. His book shows how you can kick movies in the head and make it say uncle. In other words it makes me want to go out and see these movies that where mentioned in the book and suffer to. How to sum it up, funny, very funny and maybe more of a fact than anything in a critic.

Summary: A Very Good Book
Review: Being a fan of bad movies, I really enjoyed this book. Mike Nelson, the man best known for being the host on MST3K for the later half of the shows life. All I can say is he knows a lot about bad movies! If you enjoyed his work on MST3K you will probably enjoy this book. It is both funny and witty. Worth the money in my opinion.

Summary: Mike Nelson does it again!
Review: This book was great! I couldn't put it down...you should also check out his other book, "the Mystery Science Theater Amazing Colossal Episode Guide" (also a hilarious feat)

Summary: Megacheese--And More. Waaaay More!
Review: It's been a long time since I got a book in the mail, cracked it open, and ended up reading the whole thing in one night. Mike Nelson's thoughtful and chaotically funny diatribe, review, rant--you decide--on modern moviedom and popular culture is a must-read. Are you the sort who left "Twister" or "Independance Day" empty, confused, even bitter, like someone expecting a steak who was served a Twinkie? Do you shake your head, wondering who are all the legions of morons whose cinema dollars make folks like Pauly Shore and John Travolta rich and famous? Do you still posess a moral core and sense of taste, shaking your head at flicks like "Striptease?" Mike's no prude, but he IS sane, at least on the surface, and anyone with a diehard love/hate relationship with American "culture" will love the MST3K veteran's thorough, sometimes fevered, very funny autopsy of everything laughable, lackluster, or lousy about filmdom. Fans of Adam Sandler, Robin Williams or Carrot top, I dare you to meet the humble Midwestern prophet who has come to topple your gods! Everyone else will laugh out loud the whole book through.

Summary: Mike J. Nelson is Excellent!
Review: From his career on MST3K to Timmy Big Hands, Mike has proven his worth. His writing is exceptional and it'll make you laugh so hard, you might even cry. He is quite a talent. I think being stuck on the Satellite of Love with those horrid movies gave him an advantage to reviewing better than anyone. He is a wonderful writer and so are his cohorts on Timmy. Read this book, you'll love it.
