Rating: Summary: I will never try another diet again!! Review: I never thought I could ever lose weight. I even had my doubts about this one until after I was on it for 1 week - I lost 5 pounds. And the pounds keep dropping. I love it.
Rating: Summary: My husband and I are very pleased with the results. Review: When I began the diet in January I thought there was NO WAY that you could eat eggs in the morning without toast. Well, if you scramble the eggs, place a slice of cheese between 2 layers of the eggs, let it set a couple minutes then eat ...ummmmm and I don't even get hungary before lunch! My husband has joined me in this new eating lifestyle, we both have reached our goal weight and do not find it difficult to maintain. We adhere mostly to meat/meat products, vegetables and fruit in reasonable amounts.
Rating: Summary: Slow Going! Review: I started this diet on June 28. As of today I have lost 18 pounds! I thought the weight loss would be faster but I weigh less than I would have without it. It's great that you can eat when you are hungry but it does get pretty mundane. There is not a lot of variety in what you get to eat. It does work if you can stick with it.
Rating: Summary: Words of Wisdom that work Review: I would just like to say that my first experience with Dr Atkins was from a fellow firefighter who went to his NY clinic. I was incredulous at first but decided to give it a shot. Well I lost 55 lbs in 5 months and the firehouse lost over 400lbs in the same period. When ever we find ourselves bulking up it's nice to know there is an easy painless way down. Thanks from myself and those I work with. The book was an eye opening path to a lifestyle change that works and keeps working for you and your health. The results of our annual medical exams attest to your theories. Thanks Doc.
Rating: Summary: Best Thing To Happen To Me In Years Review: I read this book on February 14, 1999 and have completely changed the way I eat and think about food. I am a 29 year old male who is 5'11" and who weighed 270 pounds when I started this. I now weigh 213 pounds and have no doubt I will get down to 185 pounds by Y2K.I travel 3-4 days a week and staying on the Atkins plan was a challenge for the 1st two months, but now is second nature for me. I can't believe how well I eat and how much weight I have lost. People that come on here and say to eat and drink less have never had a weight problem and don't understand that we all have tried eating and drinking less with little, temporary successes. The Atkins Diet provides a way to lose weight without killing yourself in the gym and counting calories. Anyhow, If you are a skeptic, just try this for two weeks and find out if it will work for you. If it doesn't then you are no worse off than before. If it does then you have an opportunity to lose the weight you've always wanted to.
Rating: Summary: Works but not a healthy diet Review: I have use the diet and it worked for me. (I have lost 10 lbs in 10 days.) Unfortunately, it is NOT a healthy diet, so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone for a long period of time. If you are interested in a healthy diet, (or improving your health), I recommend that you read the book "Diet for a new America" from John Robbins, you won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: Support for Atkin's Dieters!! + review of the book Review: I've been reading the reviews and I've noticed that a lot of people are looking for others who are also doing the atkins diet. Sure we all have questions that can't be addressed within the 400 or so pages of this book.. so here's what you do: Folks.. there's a great newsgroup at alt.support.diet.low-carb -it's full of great people and you can get quick answers to your questions, recipes and more. I feel badly that so many of you don't know about this great resource. See you there :) Oh yeah.. my review.. this diet is wonderful. I've been on it for just over a week and I've lost 8 lbs. The book is easy to read .. easy to understand.. informative.. and a terrific guide to low-carb eating. Don't listen to the people who are slamming low-carb..they don't know what they are talking about. I too, am sick of hearing people who, like most of us at some point, have been brainwashed into thinking low-fat diets were the answer. I've done all the low fat diets.. i lost plenty of weight on them.. i gained it all back plus more EVERY TIME. Guys... this is a new way of eating that's healthy and tasty.. and as a bonus.. you lose weight quickly. Yes it's different but if you are considering this book.. then you've decided you *need* to try something different. Welcome aboard! For those of you who are posting your negative thoughts about this diet.. you haven't done your homework. Spend some time learning more about low-carb eating.. and spend even more time doing the diet yourself before you post your thoughts. This diet works!!!
Rating: Summary: Don't take the Atkins steak-and-eggs bait! This diet is nuts Review: Iam 38 years old and am about thirty pounds over my ideal weight. I tried the Atkins diet out of desperation after years of trying so many other diets. This sounded like the perfect diet for me. If I could eat meat and heavy cream and LOSE weight - COUNT ME IN! Maybe this diet works for those needing to lose 70lbs and more - but I LOST NO WEIGHT. I did not cheat at all. I followed the rules to the letter. Now I know Atkins says that there is a small percentage of people who will have this reaction, so I give him that. But the truth is, NO FAD DIETS WORK. If you want to read a good book - read Dr. Dean Edell's "EAT, DRINK, AND BE MERRY." That book is a real wake up call for all of us seesaw dieters. It is so great to read a book that tells the truth - FINALLY - about dieting, exercise, and so many other health related topics.
Rating: Summary: lowest I've been since highschool Review: This new way of eating is fantastic. Growing up on meat and potatoes made it easy for me to enjoy eating my favorite steaks and cheeseburgers. I'm now 20lbs lighter than when I started it. 5'5'' and 200lbs to 180lbs. College really hurt my weight gaining and I thought that I was destined to be overweight like the rest of my family forever but this way of eating has given me new light. The first 10lbs drained away quite quickly and seemed like I was at a standstill for a couple days to lose the next one. After a few days the pounds started to drop again. I'm feeling much more confident and have faith that I'll look wonderful for a friends' wedding in about a month. If only you readers could see what a HUGE grin I've got on my face right now from happiness. :0)
Rating: Summary: Healthy, balanced individuals need not apply Review: If you are a generally healthy, balanced person who regularly exercises and is just looking to lose those few extra pounds, don't get near this diet. As other readers have testified, your workouts will be terrible -- you need carbs to achieve athletic performance..boy did I find THAT out the hard way. Atkins never addresses this topic adequately in his book, which shows you how much he emphasizes exercise. The only good thing about this diet for us was the fact that it provided us with the impetus and excuse to finally quit caffeine, sugar, and alcohol consumption. However you certainly don't need the Atkins diet in order to quit addictive or harmful substances. In addition, Atkins' ideas about reducing or eliminating fruits and vegetables (not to mention grains, bad, evil carbo-mongers that they are) on a long-term basis are totally OUT THERE. Dr. Atkins has a few decent ideas, but they are buried in a pile of half-truths and questionable scientific analysis. Find a diet that includes a balance of Atkins' ideas but doesn't go to the extreme of removing carbs. Reducing carbs isn't necessarily a bad idea, but taking this too far will almost certainly have negative repercussions for you. Kill the sugar and caffience, limit the alcohol, and start exercising regularly doing something you look forward to.
