Rating: Summary: Shiny sink, happy home! Review: I still can't believe the impact that this book has had on my life. It is so ingeniously simple, it's hard to remember why my house was always such a disaster. Reading through the book initially, I was just happy to hear that there are other cleaning-challenged people out there. But by applying the system, my house looked better on the very first day. Each day, my house looks better, and I go to sleep peaceful. While I have changed my routine, I am spending no more time on housework than I had been previously. I am just better at it now, and the results are so obvious. And I don't spend my weekends anymore just wandering around the house, overwhelmed by the mess, and never getting anything accomplished. I have recommended this book to everyone I know. And it makes a great housewarming gift!
Rating: Summary: The best organizing book to end all organizing anxiety Review: This truly is the best organizing book out there...it really does change your life. During the un-cluttering process, you can toss all those other books on eliminating disorder. Having read most of the organizing, sorting, de-cluttering books out there, I was happily surprised to find one that really did the trick, starting with the inside. If you want to feel good about your house and really want a sparkling home that doesn't seem to take forever to keep up -- this is a wonderful little book. Expect a change in attitude and brace yourself for a friendlier, cleaner home.
Rating: Summary: Great Advice; Bad Writing Review: This book is very poorly written. Most obvious is the fact that the writing simply does not flow well, but there are other problems. It is not particularly well-organized. At times it seems illogical: for example, the author says not to make rules because rules don't work, and on the very next page says, "here's the rule". Something will be defined one way one time and another way another time. Some things are not explained as well as they should be. There is an overreliance on testimonials from her fans. The snippets of the author's personal story are disjointed. And the author has a strong tendency to present examples without giving the underlying principles they are meant to illustrate or the problem they are meant to be suggested solutions to. As with the differing definitions, the reader can easily figure out what is meant, but a better writer would have made it clear to start with.In spite of all this, the book still deserves a high rating. Why? The material is great. Flylady's system of starting slowly and building routines works. The tone is always supportive, and there are some perhaps unexpected yet commonsensical insights packed in there: perfectionism can create messy houses, martyred attitudes don't help anyone, a clean home is a blessing on your family. Other reviewers have already mentioned that some people will be offended by Flylady's God-talk. Surely an equal number will find her personality grating. She is always supportive and encouraging and has a healthy "No whining allowed" dictum, but she is also regrettably sappy. This is the type of woman who has the guaranteed-to-induce-retching habit of referring to her husband as DH (Dear Husband). 'Nuff said. But please don't let your differing religious views or your disdain for feminine sappiness prevent your getting the book. If you're even considering getting this book, chances are you need it. You'll thank Flylady (bad writing, sappiness and all) when you wake up to a shiny sink and a peaceful home.
Rating: Summary: Awesome!!!! All my friends wonder what's my secret!!! I FLY! Review: When I read the first couple of chapters of this book I cried. I never in amillion years thought I was a perfectionist!!! She nailed me. I always thought I waas just a lazy slob and my house was always going to be in a perpetual state of CHAOS. In only two months I am seeing a REAL difference. My house is presentable all the time now even when it's not exactly clean. She has tought me to do things a little at a time. If I don't get to it this time I'll hit it the next time. You will never spring clean again!!!!! Every week you clean a different area of your house so that it never needs it. ALL my friends have watched this transforamtion and are amazed and have bought the book. As for the E-mail list once you know your "reminders" you can just delete them all at once and use the Flysense and testimonial and zone assignments for help and encouragement. READ IT!! USE IT!!! wudd
Rating: Summary: This book doesn't get me soaring! Review: I belong to a group of 6 women that meet regularly and work through a book to improve some aspect of our life. We heard about Sink Reflections and thought we would try it. We were very disappointed. The book was very choppy and did not read well. A lot of the information seemed to be taken from the Sidetracked Home Executive books which we had before this book. We felt that there were too many quotes from e-mails and not enough solid how-to information that would really work for busy people. We will stick with the Sidetracked Home Executives book!
Rating: Summary: Motivational but compulsive Review: I like the idea behind "Sink Reflections" and the Flylady and I'm sure this book/method works for the absolute beginner but for those of us who already have a grasp on clutter, I didn't find much new inside. I think the Flylady is more of a motivational writer than a "how to" wizard -- I didn't find much value -- some good common sense tips -- but nothing really earth shaking new. Also, her little "isms" drove me nuts. Too cutesy for my taste. As for the e-mail list ... good lord, how can anyone get organized when they receive 1000 e-mails w/in 24 hrs? LOL Final analysis of this book/method -- if you need a kick in the pants, get it. If you're already established in routine but want more in-depth knowledge and original ideas -- skip it! Beware though if you sign up for the e-mail list. I'm not joking about the e-mail reminders. They come all day long!
Rating: Summary: Sink Reflections Review: For the past few years I have read many books on getting organized, decluttering, and the like. This is the ONLY book that has given me the information I needed to get my house in order. After reading this book, my house is literally 100% more organized than ever before, and I have taken all my other decluttering books and thrown them out! They were only making clutter, and clutter was what I was trying to get rid of. A must read for anyone who wants once and for all to get the CHAOS (can't have anyone over syndrome) out of their lives and really start to live!
Rating: Summary: You're Not Alone! Review: For years I thought I was the only person who was easily overwhelmed at the thought of keep my house nice. In fact, I thought this was an impossible dream! Not anymore. FlyLady shows you how to use very simple routines and "baby steps" to bring order into chaos. You'll be amazed at what you can do in just 15 minutes. I managed de-clutter and clean my house (and keep it de-cluttered and cleaned!) just 15 minutes at a time. The testimonials kept me very encouraged and reminded me that I wasn't the only one who had a difficult time with housework. Overall, this is a fabulous book. Thank you FlyLady!!!
Rating: Summary: Cutting through the clutter Review: Different people will take away different things from this book, depending on what point you're starting out from. If you're not quite *that* bad, or if you have anything other than a typical American lifestyle, you can selectively cull ideas from the book rather than adopting the program wholesale. In our case here in Taiwan, for example, you just *don't* wear shoes in the house, even clean tennis shoes. The main value of this book for me was how it addresses the perfectionist 'all-or-nothing' attitude that so often leads to 'crash and burn', and to feeling overwhelmed and procrastination on most other occasions. The idea of small but steady steps is an excellent one, as is that of setting a timer for 15 minutes per task, and then stopping. The to-do lists are also useful. I don't like to shop and am not really a thing collector, but cultivating a routine of throwing out 27 useless items a day promises to be a good way in my case to deal with *paper*. As some other reviewers mentioned, this book is easy and fun to read. Even - make that 'especially' - very, very busy working moms stand to gain a lot from FlyLady's experience, guidance and mind gymnastics. Centering the whole system around 'love' is another of the book's many strengths. If you ever make excuses about what you just can't get around to doing in the house, give this a try.
Rating: Summary: This book changed my life! Review: I had tried everything and read every book on organizing and this book "changed my life". The first day I started to apply the flylady's principles I started to see a difference and now three months later I am still on the program and my home and life are in order. I highly reccomend this book to anyone who is having trouble with organizing books - they are usually written by organized people! Try this book. You will never go back to another "system".
