Rating: Summary: THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Review: Believe me when I tell you that this is a good book and a must have for the kinky, curly, wavy haired girls. It is written in plain English so you don't have to be knowledgeable about or licensed in hair or hair care in order to benefit from it. I read the first 52 pages in one sitting and wanted to keep reading. Mr. Dickey did a great job explaining about our hair. He also talks about relaxers and what they do to the hair. He encourages women to embrace and care for their unique textures. I like how he simultaneously entertains and educates in this book. I learned a few tips/tricks of the trade. [...] But for once a stylist is NOT afraid to give out secrets of the industry. Dickey recognizes and talks about the beauty of kinky, curly, and wavy hair. At one point he even wrote that his colleagues would do well to recognize the beauty of our texture as well. Finally a book that is written by a stylist who will tell you, GIRL LEAVE THAT RELAXER ALONE and let me beautify your kinks and curls. I give his book a big fat 5 stars.

This book is second only to "Let's Talk Hair" by Pam Ferrell. I say that because Miss Ferrell's book is specifically for kinky hair so she has a lot more information we can use. But for once a stylist is NOT afraid to give out secrets of the industry. Dickey recognizes and talks about the beauty of kinky, curly, and wavy hair. Rating: Summary: For Beginners Only Review: Hair Rules is good if you know absolutely nothing about taking care of your curly or kinky hair. Dickey excels at giving general advice and information about products and simple maintenance, but if you're looking for detailed instructions on how to style your hair at home, this is NOT the book for you. Dickey refuses to recommend any specific products (not even brands), so this book is even less useful than, say, a monthly women's magazine such as Essence or Shape. Also, the photos are mostly black and white, and lack any kind of detailed captions and close-ups that would help readers replicate these styles at home. Borrow it from the library or buy it used.
Rating: Summary: Comprehesive Review: I found this book to be extremely helpful. I learned about natural oils to use on my hair and scalp among other things and there was a nice long chapter at the end in which Dickey speaks with a dermatologist. After reading this book I became more adventurous with my hair. I tried using different hair pieces and conditioners and I can honestly say my hair feels and looks better after reading this book.
Rating: Summary: My hair looks fabulous Review: I have no idea why everyone is getting so hot under the collar about this book. Everyone can take something out this book - Dickey addresses the needs of Jewish and other ethnic women as well, not solely black people. Dickey maps out hair type, gives product advice, and answers questions much more thoroughly than other hair care books I've read. I learned so much from this book, the change in my hair is remarkable. I've been living in countries where the water quality is far below the minimum standards set by the US.I've taken Dickey's book with me through two continents and it hasn't failed me yet. This book gives good, practical information for many types of hair, without resorting to the old stand-by of, "pray about it." I'd rather pray about the bills and get some work done on my hair, thanks. All said, this book in my opinion, was wonderful. (p.s. in response to those who said the book is completely unhelpful for ALL black people and blacks should not buy it, I'm black, and I found it worked wonders. So I guess instead of berating those who make blanket statements about how the book is reserved only for black people, reviewers should aso refrain from making blanket statements about its unsuitably to ALL black people, as well.)
Rating: Summary: Finally! Truly good advice for kinky-haired girls! Review: I have spent years trying to find good, solid, usable advice from a knowledgeable expert. I followed the advice I found in magazines, advice from stylists who only knew how to handle relaxed hair (and who handled it terribly at that), and anecdotal advice from friends and relatives. As soon as I started reading "Hair Rules!", I felt like the author was speaking directly to me! This book instantly became my hair bible, and I refer to it frequently to keep up my hair care regimen. Following A. Dickey's advice, my hair is healthy and strong with a nice luster. If you have Afro-textured hair that you're trying to grow long and strong, following the advice in this book will definitely help to get you there!
Rating: Summary: At Last! Help for the Hair-Challenged! Review: I just want to say, as a middle-aged woman who has neglected her hair for decades I was lucky to find HAIR RULES! The hair care advice has made it simple and easy for me to take care of and protect my hair. Also, the interview with the dermatologist, Jeanine Downie, MD, was fascinating and invaluable. What a great combination -- simple hair care and sound medical advice -- in one book. Wherever Dickey is, I want to say thanks x 1000!
Rating: Summary: I recommend this book highly! Review: I'm black too and I love this book! I still refer to it regularly. As I have been growing out my hair from its very short natural, I have found this book to be invaluble in helping me to condition and maintain my new curls. While it's possible that this book may help black women more so than others, I have had numerous conversations with my caucasian friends of wavy/curly hair and have found that our issues/solutions have been very similar. So overall I do think this book can be useful to all. I also look forward to exploring the other books mentioned by the other reviewers.
Rating: Summary: Essential for healthy hair Review: The best hair care book I've come across yet! This book is comprehensive but simplistic. It is the first book I've seen that teaches me, as a black woman, how to take care of my curly/frizzy hair. He includes hair grooming for natural hair styles. There's also an incredibly helpful section that teaches you how to shop for products and how to use them, no matter if you wear natural or relaxed styles. He also gives guidance on the "taboo" subjects of wigs, weaves, and hairpieces. He doesn't push any products--unlike other books--and his only interest is in sharing his wealth of knowledge. I love this book!
Rating: Summary: hair rules Review: This a wonderful book for black women w/ kinky hair. For every black, white, latino woman in the world this book is for you. If you don't have it, go buy it.
