Summary: Please read this book before you get a pup!
Review: I had never heard of the Monks of New Skete, but I'm no longer a skeptic; they do a wonderful job of explaining all of the aspects of raising your puppy. It's easy to see where so many dog owners go wrong and why so many dogs act like they do (making it tough to live with them) when you read this book. You will be a much more informed and happy dog owner if you read this book, preferably before purchasing your pup.

Summary: Get this book BEFORE you adopt a puppy!
Review: A great overview of the serious committment and discipline required on the part of humans in order to raise a happy and healthy dog. From making the decision to adopt through choosing a puppy, training, and caring, this book is a the perfect primer for new dog owners, particulary for people who've never had a dog or puppy before.

Summary: Very Helpful . . . wonderfully respectful of dogs!
Review: Thank you for writing this book. It was a joy to read and very helpful in starting out raising of my new puppy, Storm who is 11 weeks of age. The book is proving to be the second best investment (besides Storm) .

Summary: Excellent! A must for ANYone preparing to get a puppy.
Review: Having had dogs as pets growing up, but looking to get a puppy of my own for the first time, I wanted to be prepared and "do it right." Considering that a dog can be with you for 10-15 or more years, you owe it to yourself and your dog to do what you can to get the most out of your relationship. This book shows precisely how to accomplish that - it describes the stages of puppy development and how to select the "right" pup for you, to early conditioning and formal training, to how to resolve common puppy problems, to general care. This helps to cultivate the best possible relationship by preventing early mistakes on YOUR part. I have a concrete guide now by which to raise my pup to be the best companion it can be - and a way to know how I can be the best possible master. It works both ways, for sure - if you ever had a doubt, you won't after reading this book. Understanding your dog leads to better "parenting" skills and good parents raise good puppies. Even if you're not new to dogs, this book has MUCH to offer...read this before you get your puppy!! (I plan to read "How To Be Your Dog's Best Friend" (also by the monks) next...)

Summary: Excellent for all dog owners
Review: This book is a masterful presentation of a loving, humane method for raising dogs. It starts with the dam just before the puppies are born. All aspects are covered for a normal birth and healthy puppies. Special medical needs are not covered, but for most dog breeders and puppy owners, they are not necessary.

Setting up the whelping area, feeding dam and puppies, socialization, early training, and methods for successful placement are covered in detail. A great book for all breeders and owners. We have been raising dogs over 30 years and found many helpful and timely ideas that we had not seen anywhere else. A must have!

Summary: If you want to understand your dog, this book is a must!
Review: There are many publications which will talk to you of how to train your dog with proven methods for making them a working part of your life. However, I have read no other publications which will help you to UNDERSTAND your animal more than this book. The Monks of New Skete teach you to see the world as your pup will and to help you to develop a relationship which is comparable to no others you have had in your life. By understanding the animal in your life, this book also teaches you to understand how your actions can be viewed by a species which sees the world through ACTIONS, not words. Thus you learn to understand not only your puppy, but yourself. Needless to say, I believe this is the best book I've ever read on the relationship between human and beast!

Summary: Great Confidence Builder
Review: Spunky, my last dog, lived to the grand age of 19. The new puppy is coming in a month and although I've had dogs all my life, I knew I didn't remember enough about puppies. This book was great. It walks you through the different stages and lets you know how to deal with problems or when to expect some challenges (i.e. the fear stage at 8 to 10 weeks). I feel like my new puppy will be a much better companion because of this book.

Summary: A MUST HAVE FOR ALL DOG OWNERS!
Review: As a professional dog trainer I have to say the Monks are right on the mark! Their books are a must read for any and every dog owner. I read them when I first started out and learned more than I thought possible from a book. Read it, Learn it and most importantly Use It! An excellant companion for their other book and video!

Summary: A Must-Read for All Dog Owners
Review: I wish I'd had this book when I brought my first puppy home two years ago. She was a nine-week old Rottweiler I named Belle, a darling, if not dimwitted, dear that captured my heart. Unfortunately, I was ill-equipped to handle such a pet, given her breed, eventual size, and youthful energy. Of course, I knew that puppies required a lot of attention, but who had any idea the extent of care that is necessary to raise a good pet, especially one of this size? I certainly didn't! My uncle eventually took her to his home where she'd have lots of room to run around and other big dogs, so I know she's well cared for... still, the experience left an impression on my mind, and I didn't want to make the same mistakes twice if I ever got a puppy again. Well, two years later, as I prepare to bring home a new puppy -- this time, an eight-week old female rat terrier named Daisy -- I picked up this book, determined to be a better pet owner. And I'm grateful to the Monks of New Skete for preparing such a thoughtful, educational text for people like me. From the birth of these loyal, precious animals to testing for temperament, then moving toward training, I've developed a much better understanding of what it means to work with a puppy. Or rather, to train myself. This text is highly recommended for all dog owners, regardless of age, for it contains a wealth of information that should be shared with everyone before bringing home a loving pet such as a dog.

Summary: A comphrehensive, wonderfully sensitive book.
Review: This book is a well-written, comphrehensive guide to the process of selecting and raising a puppy. It explains in detail each stage of the puppy's early development, and gives the reader a clear understanding of how the puppy is influenced by what he experiences from birth onwards, then goes on to cover housetraining, training of the puppy, and corrections for common problems. This book is absolutely indispensable to anyone who wants to learn a practical, sensitive and sensible approach to puppy raising. The monks have a wonderful style of writing which makes this book fun and easy to read...their sensitivity and genuine love of the dogs that they raise comes through on every page.
